I knew this was too much of a good thing. So apparently, according to an official press release, FFVIIR will be told across multiple parts. From the website

Well, that turned my "interested in buying" to "what the hell?". So, guys, thoughts on the idea of buying this game multiple times?

Well, that was fast. I went from 'Don't give a shit' to 'Kind of give a shit' to 'Giving all my shits, but in a completely angry way.'

Gotta say, this ride is more emotionally engaging then FF7's Emo Ultra Script.

I'm gonna wait for more information before I pass judgement. Not really a fan of this being episodic. I wanted a full game and was willing to wait two years or more to get it.

Still, that line is kinda vague. And I saw nothing clarifying it in the link. It could easily be talking about giving us the classic game and spin off story lines.

Welp, gotta milk that cow 'til it's dry. Then beat it some, and grind its bones into paste to feed to other cows.

Here's a clarification about the whole multi-part comment.

I was wondering if that was the case.

I mean, the game is fucking huge, and if they want to release it in a timely manner then they would have to split it up.

I've never played the game, but my understanding is that there are a lot of NPCs that you interact with and a huge world to explore. For something that would also have to be updated in terms of graphics and aesthetic, I would actually be surprised if they did do it all in one go.

I'm not all that bothered since it would make sense for them to do that.

I'm not gonna put it past them to remove the over-world and just make it so you travel from location to location automatically. That being said though, I don't doubt that the voice over clips from all the dialogue is a big part of why the file size is going to be so huge that they feel inclined to break-up the game into separate releases.

The only thing that I'm worried about is how much they are going to charge for it. If I'm paying sixty bucks for each part, that's not okay. But if we're talking 25 to 30, then okay.
I'm still super excited for this regardless though.

I'm going to hold judgement till we actually know more. For all we know there may be some miscommunication. Even so maybe it means we can at least get a chunk of the experience sooner then later. Maybe its the only way to get part of the game finished by the Anniversary. I just hope the following parts don't take too long, and aren't split more then 3 times.

I think it makes sense to split the game up as well. It's unrealistic that they would release a game as huge as FF7 with the graphical quality they've shown in the trailers and not become another pipe dream the way FF15 lingered in development for like a decade. The development would be way too long and the investment for Squeenix way too high.

I never really liked 'episodic' content but MGS5 kind of changed my mind on the subject. I think that game would have benefitted greatly if they separated the original 3 chapters over 3 games. Now you have a really good chapter 1, a rushed and disappointing chapter 2 and a non-existent chapter 3 all b/c of budget and time constraints.

So yeah, it depends on the game obviously but I think FF7 Remake is a game that can really benefit from such a structure.

If you compare it to current episodic games like the Telltale games, Life is Strange, or Resident Evil Revelations, them releasing it in parts wouldn't cost you as the customer anymore money than a single, non-episode game of comparable quality.

The only example I can think of where that hasn't been the case is StarCraft II, which could be seen as a single game split into three releases, each one for the cost of a full game.

Well here's an interview from Nomura and Kitase about the episodic content.

Well, as I thought it's more of a compromise then anything to make sure it will be released in a timely manner. If they do expand and place a lot of detail into the world it's going to take a lot of time and resources. Releasing it early will recoup some losses and ensure development of the rest. It may suck to not get the full package all at once, but in this day and age it may become the norm.

huh... well my enthusiasm has turned to cautiously optimistic, really this remake has been an emotional roller coaster

If it's reasonable I may still get it as it comes out but otherwise I may wait for a 'complete edition' to come out eventually

Eh, I wouldn't really call FF7's script "Emo Ultra". There were certainly emo moments to it but it wasn't really that overwhelming.

FF8 on the other hand...every single character from the protagonist to the main boss is a complete emo git.

Nah, from the sound of things they're going with the StarCraft II Defense: "There's just so much we want to do with this game, there's no way we can fit it all into a single installment. That's why we're going to break it into pieces and sell it to you in segments." Which brings up the point of...

I still find this excuse a bit hard to believe. Do you know how much data can be stuffed into a disc these days? Look at Witcher 3...that game is fucking massive and they managed to get it all onto one disc. If FF7 proves to be even bigger, then they could...you know...just make a game with two or three discs.

When you put it like that, it sounds way worse.

Oh man, that would be awesome. Bringing back retro PS1 gaming for realsies.

This is good news for my friend who only wants to play to the point where Cloud needs to be the prettiest girl at the ball in order to see it in HD.

So are we talking episodic like Telltale games or is it something like Mass Effect where ME 1-3 told the one overarching story?

I'm going to assume the latter but I don't mind either way to be honest
