So FFXIII was recentlly released, now I have never been interested in the series, but this one caught my attention, no not due to those cheesy ass trailers but due to the high ratings and new looking combat system (my knowledge extends to that FF is infamous for turnbased, which isn't bad but it has grown old). So this has me intrigued, and I'm on the fence to buy it or not. I want an RPG to last, yes I have DA:O it is good but it's missing that oumph, does FXIII have it? Is it a game that would be inviting to newbies to JRPGS? Or is it more of a "If your a fan you will like it, if not avoid it" kind of deal. A short review would be nice along with feedback of what I should do.

Update: March 15 2010: Seems to be a mixed bag in here. Those who like it actually make valid points while the ones who didn't seem to just want to rilled fanboys/girls. Ugh maybe it will go on sale at walmort or something so I won't feel horrible if I hate it.

Still on the fence, just saying the lover make good points, especially kawaiiamethist, and Space Spoons.
I say just rent it. That way you can test it out and see if you like it without having to spend money to buy it.

I've always quite liked FF games but the more recent ones have been putting me off a bit. FFXIII i played to the end and quite enjoyed it. There were some things i disliked about it though like the varying difficulty curve of being able to quickly finish a fight one minute and the next spending ages chipping away at an enemies hp, or suddenly getting insta-killed out of nowhere. Overall tho i was glad i got this game and spent the hours i did playing it, kept me entertained.

Only thing that i found stupid was how characters lose their concept for magic to lengthen the game, for example if you see a small fire why cant they cast a water spell or something and put it out.

I recommend the game but it's not for everybody

I've only ever liked 1 other Final Fantasy mainly because I hate turn based combat, but FFXIII is now easily one of my all time favorite games.

Its a must buy

It's a bit behind X in my eyes but, holy shit, it's such an improvement from the last game. Actually, I've noticed they took some things from XII and put them in XIII but only the gooduns.
Indeed.

They took the mix of turn based/real time combat from XII but made it actually tolerable and fun.

This is really the only time I've ever been addicted to it. With X, I would put it down for a while then come back to it after a bit, but I've been playing 13 nonestop since I got it.

The characters are all well done. I was a bit iffy about Sazh but it turns out his story was one of the most saddening.

Gah! No spoilers! I've yet to finish it!

Anyway...yes, I ended up liking Sazh so far the most out of the 6. Vannile was extremely annoying at first to the point where I was considering quiting the game because her voice was so...ugh, but I (like Sassafrass told me before) ended up liking it and finding it enjoyable to hear.

Plus, she's the best healer and when I have her set to Medic or Ravenger she's probably the best.

For me, Final Fantasy XIII signals the end of the Final Fantasy series as the seminal JRPG title. It represents a decision to attempt to maintain the deep rich story we've come to expect from Jrpgs, but with the most linear and off-putting gameplay imaginable. Sure, the new fast-paced action-packed combat system is bound to pull in those who otherwise would have just lumped JRPGS into a minority of gamers and otaku.

The combat system SEEMS fast paced and fun... but one can quickly see how after 20 hours, this combat system will have lost it's luster. Which brings up a problem for me..

It seems that JRPGs have more J and less RPG as time goes on. To be quite honest, If i wanted to play a fast-paced hack and slash game with exotic anime-inspired characters and a convoluted nigh incomprehensibly philosophical storyline I'd play Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. When I play JRPGS i enjoy not only the strategic process of turn-based combat, but the selection of my party, the exploration of dungeons, management of resources, and the sweet sweet reward of grinding your way to the final battle or fighting difficult/special bosses.

In Final Fantasy XIII, you have virtually none of that. Sure the story is there, but you are led LITERALLY by the hand through it, as if FInal Fantasy XIII was going to be a Square Enix animated film before someone got the bright idea that they could make even more money if they slapped a game onto it somewhere.

Bottomline: everyone has different tastes, but for me, this game is a step in the wrong direction.
I couldn't agree more. Everything I love about the other FF games is completely missing from this game. But you mentioned that "the story was there." It took me about 6 Goddamn hours to figure out what the fuck was going on in the game. With the Cocoon, and the fal'Cie and the L'Cie, and the Cie'th. I was literally going out of my mind trying to figure out what the whole point of the game was. And what the shit is with Vanille grunting, and "oohing" and "aahing" at every goddamn thing? "Hnnf, aah! Oooh! Haha, I'm gonna explore!" Wtf?

Final Fantasy (and Square-Enix in general) lost its spark with me after playing FF12. I thought the company might redeem itself with "Infinite Undiscovery." Holy shit was I wrong. Maybe "Last Remnant" will be better? Oh-ho, you sly fuckers, fooled me again!

I'm not saying FF13 is a bad game. Its just lacking everything that makes Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy (including the outrageous, ridiculous, and often times retarded hair cuts).
Good...it seems to be a bit dull here. I thought my hubby and I were the only ones thinking that. We are so fed up right now, that even if FFVII was released with bells and updated graphics, we wouldn't be interested.

On a related note, we are glad it was on the 360, cuz right now, we cannot play any PS3 games due to the fact we have an original PS3 and it doesn't have trophies. THat's ok, it's out blue ray player and a door stop.
I dont mind my original PS3 but I am glad they brought it out for the XboX as well. The Special edition 360 finally was the kick in the bum I needed to go get a new xbox 360 after my ex sold mine (grr). I was in a discussion over this game with a few coworkers. I do miss the anime style graphics and the Turn based RPG, I do like the Paradigm system and the plot as well.

An opinion from a non-fanboy (sort-of), who hasn't played a JRPG in a while...

I love a little bit of everything when it comes to gaming, but the JRPGs haven't been able to hold my interest in a while. The last one I really played (as in to the end) was FFX (which I liked). I have also played FF 1,2,3,6,7,8 and 10. So I used to be a bit of a whore to the franchise. But FF11 being on online wanna-be, I said goodbye to the series, until FF13. Yes I was a victim of hype, but I'm glad I was. A quick "review" for you and any others interested from a 28 year video game veteran.

There may be minor spoilers, but only in referenece to gameplay, no story spoilers here...

First off, I will say that having not seriously played a JRPG since FFX, I was pleasantly surprised by this game. It takes a while to really get started (i.e. you unlock all the intracacies of the battle system) but once you have the full combat system at your disposal, it is very deep and rewarding. It is not turn based but ATB based in that all characters have a time bar that slowly fills and once it is full you can perform an action (or several). More powerful actions will take up more of the time bar, so there is a little strategy there. One thing that when I started I thought I would dislike is the fact that you only every directly control one character, the computer controls the direct actions of the others in your party. Before paradigms are unlocked, this seems very limiting, but once you unlock the paradigm system, the combat is amazing. Almost every battle requires your full attention (unlike the mindless grinding I remember from previous JRPGs) and your use of the paradigm system is paramount. Selecting between major assault to healing to buffing/de-buffing is very tricking in some battles and requires thought. Especially when you add the stagger mode. Stonger enemies must be staggered in order to deal any real damage to them. It is a matter of having character that deal chain damage + characters that keep the chain gauge from depleting. It can be very tricky as you will need to heal, but also have to keep the pressure on. You may change paradigms after every action of your main character. It is intense and deeply satisfying. I will say that it is my favorite combat system of the JRPGs I've played.

That is combat, how is everying thing else? Well, as I'm sure you've heard, the game is VERY liniar. I'm only in Chapter 9 and I hear it "opens up" in one of the later chapters, but so far it is straight line city. I don't really mind this so much. It does make the game a little more accessable to noobs as you can't get lost and you know where your next objective is (a problem with some JRPGs I've played). But I admit that I am looking forward to a world that is a little more open. I am also looking forward to the time when I can chose my party members. You will float between MANY different partys, and all are chosen for you. At first I didn't like this, but then I was given a party that had no strong attack character and I was forced to play a little different. Then I was given a party with a really stong character and a really weak one, again, forcing me to play different. So it keeps the game fresh (and obviously is meant to move the story of the charters along). The invintory system has a perk to "upgrade" your weapons, but it seems I don't really have enough resources to do it. You could get them by farming somewhere, but as the game is very linear, you don't have any real farming opportunities. Well, you sorta do, you can save your game and reload and area and when you do, the enemies will respawn. I found myself doing this in one area because the combat was pretty hard and I was enjoying the battles.

The story is good. One feature they added was a jounal to give you the back story and it updates with each important even that happens in game. Think of it like the codex from Mass Effect. I have found it helpful. Something that sorta turned me off to the JRPGs is that they always tend to add character that are really annoying. It is usually a young brat (their anime does the same thing). When I saw a young brat potential in the begining of this game, I was about to roll my eyes, but the character has actually turned out to be pretty good and not a whiny brat. Who knew?

And then there are the summons. I like the new "transformer" summons, it is a neat little twist. However, I don't like that only the party leader can summon one and only the summon tied to that character. Does this change later in the game? If I have characters in my party that have a summon ability, I should be able to use it. So I don't like that part of it. And the Gestalt mode seems a little tacked on, although it offeres the most damage. Also, the summons seem weak. They use to be kind of a game changer in previous FF titles. Now they just seem to be a punching bag that can do a little damage and it you can't use them that often (a balancing thing I'm sure). I might not be using them correctly, as I haven't called on them much, but they are cool.

So in summary, I don't know the meaning of a short post. The combat system is very good, IMHO, you are forced to play the game a little differently by being given intersting character combos. Where I havn't minded the "forced" parties (and actually enjoyed it), I am really looking forward to the time when I can pic the party because each charter is completely unique (the bufferes/de-buffers have different spells/abilities) and they all have different class sets. I want to build my own party (as I am becoming fond of certain characters) and see how they do.

I am playing it and it is great, linear (well it is a jrpg) but great. I like the combat, though at first it can be very simplistic, it gains strengh as you advance.

Hope is my favourite character. The scene before he gets his Eidolon forced me into a bit of a man-cry.

OH MAN this is MY BIGGEST GRIPE with the game...
Ok, So I'm forced to control ONLY the party leader and rely on a dodgy AI to do the rest.. alright I suppose I can deal with that. What I CAN'T deal with is how EVERYONE can enjoy the benefit of a Phoenix DOWN.. EXCEPT ME!?!? Why is there no "auto-ressurect" if you have the spell or phoenix downs available? Why is it game over? Why can't my party members use this to bring ME back to life?

The way I see it, this THE biggest flaw in Final Fantasy XIII... the fact that after ALL other changes, success depends on the absolute survival of your MAIN character. I might as well spam potions on myself all day and allow my party to do all the killing. Sure I wont get 5 stars with every battle, but at least I'll survive till the end.

its a great game it really doesn't matter if u get if for the ps3 or 360 but the one draw this game has is the dialogue it sucks and the characters are the typical final fantasy but the game has a great story and great controls and great combat they also improve on a lot of other things

I'm in Grand Pulse right now, holy crap, I wanted some exploration and I got it!

The combat system is fun, fast paced, and entertaining, everything you could want in a combat system. I do however, still find it rather easy.

This has taken its place among my top 3 favorite FF's (FFVII is #1), and I'm not even done yet! Its seriously a lot of fun.

My only gripes is the lack of GIL and the summons.

How am I suppose to buy something that costs 2 MILLION Gil when I've been at roughly 30k for the last 20 hours of game play? I really don't get how to effectively earn money in this game. (Besides farming Incentive Chips, for several weeks, earlier in the game, which I can't do anymore).

The summons are downright useless. You can more effectively deal damage with your normal party than your summon will be able to do. I basically never use them anymore, the fact I can only use 1 at a time increases that though process. I just don't see the point of them, they simply aren't strong enough.

Overall however, I'm loving it.

You get a chocobo yet? Gran Pulse is the real meat of the game imo. It basically consists of more combat via the 64 missions and digging up treasure with the chocobos so you can sell them for massive amounts of gil. Awesome stuff though. Just wish there were some real minigames aside from the chocobo. Doesn't detract from the experience though. Still epic as can be.
Nope, but I knew they were coming. I'm glad my money worries will be put to an end with one. Makes me not worry about it so much right now.

FFIX. Was a really fun game. Doesn't get enough respect IMO.

6 is probably #4 on my list, and its limited to that due to fact I never actually finished it.

For the record, I hated 8, hated 10 even more, played 11 but I don't count it, and never played 12.

Thank GOD, somebody who loves FFVIII as much as I do.
Honestly, I don't know why so much hate for FFVIII. Most of it I think comes down to the fact that it revolves around a VERY WELL WRITTEN and deep character development structure (where have I heard THAT before? hmmmm). I think the problem is, after FFVII, VIII came off like a Twilight novel to the more emo/dark minded young lads of that generation. Yet FFVIII to date remains my absolute favorite Final Fantasy and in my opinion the most emotive one of the bunch.

Perhaps thats why people don't like it.. because it actually made you FEEL, maybe even shed a tear a little bit, and thats not something guy gamers really want to experience.
