in half-life 2 ep.2
Eli's death seriously depressed my for almost a week, and whenever I see that video i get terribly sad.
on the bright side, the voice acting for that part was truly wonderful.

Agreed, this was one of the few times a video game nearly made me cry.
Nearly. I am a man, we do not cry. RAAARG!

Anyway...
The most recent Skulduggery Pleasant book.
When Bliss gets turned inside out or something gruesome like that.
Why do they always kill off the most awesome of charaters?!

Paranoia Agent
The deaths of Zebra, Kamome, and Fuyubachi in Paranoia Agent. If you've seen it you'll know.
I liked them. At least they're finally happy.

Sadistic bastards.

Eiichiro Oda was right when he said that characters don't need to be killed to create drama.
Yeah, but when they enter 'paradise' most of them can be seen to have 'survived'. So, very few actually died.

Chewbacca. Seriously, a fucking moon fell on him. At least he went out after saving Han and everyone's hide, howling defiantly at his impending doom.

From Trigun
Nicholas D. Wolfwood. He embraced Vash's ideals and died because of it

Hrrm. So many awesome characters perish by the pen of GRRM.

Sandor Clegane
Berric Dondarrion
Eddard Stark
Robert Baratheon
Greatjon Umber
Oberyn Martell

Just to say a few.
Actually I don't think Sandor is dead, read the last book again and pay special attention to when Breinne (sp?) is at the monastary where the Hounds horse is.

Wash in Serenity and DeCaprio's character in The Departed caught me completely off guard.

That is why you either
A) use the G.E.C.K. to make him invincible
B) Use console commands to make him invincible
C) Get Broken Steel and get the puppies perk

Me!/Crono!

Basically I was like, "Oh wow. I was just expecting that doofus Dalton and already I'm facing the cosmic horror threatening the Earth? End of the game already? Well alright. I'll just work myself through it...

Dear god. Did he just kill my entire party in one attack?! Fuuuuuuuu- Wait...what is this?

Oh I guess that was supposed to happen...oh hey! My party is getting sucked towards him! STOP! What?! What do you want me to do?! Okay run towards him, basic villain talk, and then complete vaporization of my character.

Wait, what?! Lengthy scenes of the apocylapse ensue. I begin to wonder where things went so wrong.

Thankfully it doesn't stick. I put nearly all my tabs into Crono...

Also Fire Emblem practically has this as a game mechanic.

I'm going to go with Lenny from Of Mice and Men. What annoyed me more was that someone told me it happened before I finished the book, but I half dismissed it (kept thinking about it in the back of my mind).
