soo if she couldn't afford to pay a 50k$ fine, how did she afford to pay lawyers over 5 years? I'd imagine the total cost would come close to that, if not more..

I would honestly rather go to jail than let some greedy assholes take that much of my money because I listened to some dudes thwack a couple of strings and bang on some drums in synchronicity. I've been playing music my whole life and even I don't want or think I deserve a cent for my music, and all these shitty bands today (and their managers) think their music is worth my fucking house.
I agreed with you right up to the point where you insinuated that music has no value. Just because you don't feel like you deserve to make any money from your music doesn't mean nobody does. You are not the world.

None of that even matters, because with the exception of the big-name, top-40 bands, the record companies keep 100% of the money they make from music sales; the bands themselves have to get by on what they make from concerts. So believe me when I say that supporting musicians and supporting the RIAA are not only not the same thing, but in fact complete opposites.

You know what would have required real courage and discipline? Not buying music from assholes if you don't like the way they operate, and not stealing it either. Just find something else to do.
considering the RIAA owns almost ALL music, that would be very hard to do unless you LIKE living your life in silence.
Then you're not looking hard enough. There are plenty of indie labels out there that put out decent music. Just because none of it gets on the radio because the labels can't afford to bribe/aren't owned by the same media giants that run the radio stations, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Also, don't use the RIAA themselves as your source of which labels are owned by them and which ones aren't. They have been known to lie and take credit for labels they don't actually have any connection to. Probably to keep those labels from getting money from those of us who are trying to support them.

I didn't mean music has no value... I just think bands that are okay with whats been happening to the industry are sell outs. Sure musicians need to survive, and I guess I misspoke, because they deserve money for their work. They just don't deserve to make more than brain surgeons and other important people.

And like you said, most of that money isn't even going to them anyway.

The recording industry is evil and retarded. They need to stop worrying about piracy and focus on something they can control and build a new business model. There has to be other ways to make money from music. Like looking at adds before you download or donating a large portion to charity so you can feel good donating while getting a song too.

Also I'm sure they're still making a handsome profit from music sales as is. At most a fine of $50 dollars per song. I hope piracy increases after all this crap.

To the person who said that putting your Cd's onto your iPOD isn't Illegal. While I don't believe they have a court case to set precedent yet, as of 2006, the RIAA has taken the stance and has argued it in court cases still in litigation, that it is an infringing use to do just that.
It isn't Illegal. In Canada we are allowed to make copies of our software and music for personal use, as a protected right.
I'm not saying it IS illegal, I'm saying the RIAA says it is.
