Ladies and gentlemen, everyone, gather 'round. I'm in somewhat of a personal dilemma. I have not played a FF game. But, I really want to. I'm starting to get into JRPGs. I haven't really looked around at forums and reviews for which ones I should play. But what I do see is that the majority says that 7, 8, & 9 are some of the best. Some say otherwise. Now I'm stuck.

Fine time for uncertainty to knock on my door.

If it helps, the one jrpg I have played is Lost Odyssey. Haven't beat it, but I will eventually.

Please, leave all fanboy bickering aside. Anyways, at least try to. I come to you as a gamer in need. Don't soil my invitation.

So, I ask of you 3 simple questions;

Can someone suggest on where I should start?
I own a PS3, so, should I play 7, 8, & 9?
Must I avoid FFXII & XIII?
My suggestion, as a long-standing fan of the Final Fantasy series is to start out on an early title to ease yourself into the gameplay and mythos. Three is good. Four is good. Six is good. Three and four are on the DS if you're adamant against pirating, but they're on the internet for emulation if you're not. Six you'll have to emulate on ZSNES or something. Once you've played one or all of those, then move on to the 3d titles. Seven is pretty good. Eight is decent, but has a lot of arbitrary grinding. Nine, for me, was really, really fun. Ten is decent, but play seven, eight, or nine first. Don't play X-2, m-kay. Play XII only if you can get yourself interested in the gameplay/environment because it has nothing going for it as far as character development or anything resembling that. XIII is XIII and should be played last. Judge it based on the experiences the other games give you.

I've tried several Final Fantasy games and I'm afraid I've never been able to finish them. It's a shame because they interest me greatly. And it's not that I don't like JRPG's, I've played plenty of Pokémon, Paper Mario, Golden Sun, and others.

I couldn't really get into Final Fantasy Tactics either, and I absolutely love Fire Emblem and Shining Force. Just seems like Square Enix can't hold my attention, but I'll give them another chance with Final Fantasy VII soon.

Anyway, from what I've played of Final Fantasy IV it's got a great story. Good a place as any to start.

Try Tactics Advance (one or two). The story is much better in my opinion and keeps a better pace.

Definately play 7 and 9, I would also recommend 10 for sure. 12 is very much a mileage may vary game, I loved it but I know many people who hated it. 13 is... hard to love I'll admit, I don't love it, and I tried very hard to do so.

6,7,9 and Tactics. 7,9 and Tactics can be downloaded on the PSN. 6 you'll have to get a PS1 version of it.

FF9 is garnishing more and more merit for me. It's like a beautiful pimple that I just want to pop and play with. I means in a good way.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
of the new ones I would say 9, altho 8 did do some cool stuff before just going insane, altho if you want the best ff games then you need to play ff2 and 3 (american numbers, too lazy to look up the Japanese ones)

Ah, but Tactics Advance is the one I tried. I played it for about two hours, then forgot about it and replayed Fire Emblem for the dozenth time.

When I said "Final Fantasy Tactics" I meant the whole "Tactics" spinoff series in general. I probably should have been more specific though...

Yeah. When I hear "Tactics" I think PSX. When I hear "Tactics Advance" I think ... Advance. I dunno what to say. I guess it not for everyone... ... ... Ever play Advance Wars?

The PS1 titles (7, 8, 9) are definitely the best, although I understand complaints about 8. 7 and 9 are fantastic though. Of the NES titles, I'd go with 4 and 6, 5 is less-than-spectacular from my understanding. As for the PS2, definitely 10 and go for 12, I personally don't get the hate that it's got.

The only one I have every played through entirely is FF7 and I'm a fan. I always hear that FF6 is great also.

Start with 7, 8 or 9 is my advice. I would say start with FF6, but that's a game that people either love it or hate it, and it isn't 3d in any shape or form so that can put most people off. :)
Oh no..........so many choices! I'm like a kid who has to pick one toy or the other. So much pressure......about to........

<color=purple>Wow. Really, start anywhere. Well with any core game. I wouldn't go out and get chocobo tales as my first FF game....no wait that sounds cool, i would definitely do that.
Seriously though, you can play 1-6 for free(get a gba emulator & Roms). Great games, i am partial to I and III. But if you want to play the real FF III title, you gotta play the DS version or find the Japanese version, because the III that came out for nintendo in America wasnt the actual third title. So a DS emulator could get you that great title, or buy the game like me. :p Worth it.
If youre looking fo a good console title, I have always heard bickering about VII-IX. I think it is just personal preference. I think FF X and X-2 have a bigger range of interest and are absolutely great games imo. If you like MMO's then play XI. If you want a newer/nicer game, with faster paced combat, but the same jrpg feel, XII and XIII did a great job implementing Final Fantasy features and being innovative.

Hope this helps. :3

First off don't bother playing Final fantasy I and II (remakes or otherwise) they are far too basic, too hard and haven't aged well at all.

Final fantasy III is okay but is one of the most hardest in the series but if you own a DS and like hard taxing games then you should pick up DS version as it is much superior (and plus the orginal famicom version of 3 like 2 is only avalible via emulation and import).

Final fantasy IV is proberly the first in the series that dermands any real attention. It's not amazing by any means but it is a enjoyable game though pick up the DS version (cause its good).

Final fantasy V is really a forgotten gem of a game. The story isn't nothing to shout about (in fact its pretty terrible and cheesy) but the gameplay is amazing especially the job system which in fact is the most complex and most thought out in the whole final fantasy series. The game can be emulated or imported but it is also avalible on the final fantasy anthology on the psone if you don't want to import or emulate.

Final fantasy VI (or should i say the escapist's second coming of jesus) is a game i haven't played much of but i hear nothing but praise for it (even yahtzee has praised it O.O) so i really can't comment about that one but it has presumably the best bad guy in the whole series so...yeah.

Final fantasy VII well...um... you proberly know about it already, all you need to know is that its a great game and that is all.

Final fantasy VIII is personally my favourite final fantasy game for being the one that i enjoyed the most. Granted their are a few minor niggles with the games battle system (and the fact its very complex and confusing) and the plot in places is kinda wierd, but get past those and you will have a blast.

Final fantasy IX is more akin to the old final fantasy games (mainly I-V) and its has a rather kiddyish art style but that shouldn't stop you from playing a great final fantasy. Its also very acessable for people who are new to the franchise (and to the whole JRPG gerne even).

Final fantasy X is possibly the last truly good final fantasy game and one of the final fantasy games you must play. The world of spira is a amazing place and the game has great graphics that hold good even to this day. though their are alot of Jrpg clitche's in this game and Some of the characters are very annoying also the voice acting in the game is borderline terrible (the laughing scene anyone?).

Final fantasy XI is a Mmorpg that is not even worth aknowledging it's exsistence.

Final fantasy XII is a absolute tragedy of a game (I seriously can't belive anyone likes it) it has a bland art style, a battle system to make your brains rot and a story which is so boring and not even intresting in the slightest, just avoid it!.

Final fantasy XIII while okay (and which being much, much better than the last two outings) just didnt do much for me. It has a fairly intresting story and battle system (that tries to shake things up abit) but the linearity of the game has stopped many from liking it (it did me). Its the final fantasy game you either love or hate but its worth a play anyway.

You should play all of the games up to nine. After that it just goes down hill. Doesn't matter what order you play them as they're all unrelated. Just put the games in a circle round a bottle and spin it, or something to that effect.

heres the best suggestion, buy the final fantasy games throw them in the bin then buy something good like..well....anything dragon age origins mass effect, fallout 3 oblivion... hell pac man..

the final fantasy games are pretty much worthless and should be brought to an end.
Well, I see where your coming from. But, here's the thing, I've played all these. Only exception is Dragon Age, it's the only one I haven't beat. I just wanna give these games a chance........................*chuckles*....Pac-Man is fun though........

Can someone suggest on where I should start? Personally, I think FFX is a great representation of the series. It's one of the better ones in my opinion, so it's a good way to get hooked into FF.

I own a PS3, so, should I play 7, 8, & 9? I personally don't think VII is worth it at the high prices people try to sell it for, but for the $10 on the PSN, you might as well. VIII and IX are worth playing, imo.

Must I avoid FFXII & XIII? No, play them too. I haven't played FFXIII for myself yet but XII was still fun and enjoyable.
