Final Fantasy XIII Will Use 100% of PS3's Power

FF13 Producer Yoshinori Kitase told Japanese gaming mag Dengeki PlayStation that the final version of the game will push Sony's monolithic powerhouse to its limit.

While the Final Fantasy XIII demo included with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete - hitting Japan in mid-April and the States this June - will only push the PlayStation 3 to "about 50 percent of its power," the team at Square-Enix is looking to bring all of the PS3's vaunted resources to bear on the final product.

Silly allusions to Dragonball Z (We are only using a fraction of the PS3's true power! Bwahahahaha!) aside, one has to admit that if the claim ends up being true, it'll be quite the feat. The PS3's selling point this console generation is the power lurking beneath its sleek black frame and a game that supposedly shows the full potential of what the hardware can do might be an interesting attraction for undecided buyers.

On the other hand ... while FF13 will be exclusive to the PS3 in Japan only - in the west, it will be simultaneously released on the Xbox 360. If the RPG will indeed be pushing the Sony console to the limit, how will the 360 version fare - and will it be enough to swing the tide of the console war back in Sony's direction as far as the West is concerned?

Furthermore, FF13's long development time might mean that by the time it is released, it won't be quite so cutting edge anymore. I mean, we already have Crysis - who's to say that PC games won't keep pushing that margin?

And even further - who says this isn't bollocks? The correct statement would have been 'We've been pushing the PS3 as far as we could', which doesn't say it's at its limits. Anyone who's seen, say, Persona 4, will agree that pushing a console to its limits takes a lot of time.
It might be the Ps3's limits concerning what can be done using 'normal' coding - but that isn't to say we won't be seeing more optimizations in the future. which is what I place my bet on.

DISCLAIMER: I neither have a PS3 nor intent on buying one.

Fantastic. The game is going to look amazing. Whoop-de-doo, it's an FF game, of course it is. Frankly, I think the series has been focusing too much on being at the cutting edge of graphics and not enough at being a genuinely fun series. I still enjoy it, but let's change priorities Square.

Well, I'm guessing the PS3 will actually be able to run FFXIII. Though, the price of the PS3 makes it just about as accessible as Crysis.

Anyway, I can't wait to see it in action on my new 42" plasma in my room. Only like another 3 years, right?

The lights in our houses will flicker from the juice that game will pump! And once we get to 100% of the PS3's power, what's next ?

Gonna be able to fry eggs on my 360 when it's running this. And by "this," I mean disc 1 of 10 that the game will come on.

I thought the BluRay feature was a bigger selling point than all that theoretical talk about "potential performance" that makes about zero difference for the customer?

And yeah, how much will that 100% claim really amount to when it's a cross-platform game? And more importantly, when will it actually come out? They've been working on this for so long I wonder if they're going to make their dev costs back or bleed due to cost overrun.

Please, Sony have been hopelessly trying to get some groundbreaking games on it and after the completely disappointing Killzone 2, LAIR and MGS4 its only got this to redeem itself, and I am ready to see it flop.

plus why are people going on about the graphics? i've seen equal graphics on Dead or Alive 4, and if they are super graphics like they say then its going to lag like no one buisness.

plus Blueray is overrated, there isn't enough improvement over DVD to make it the next big advance

I can hardly believe they will be able to push it to the limit. If the demo is only using 50% then they have a whole lot of fucking work to do to push it to 100% till the full release. Either this comes out in 5 years with optimized code or I call bullshit.
