Why don't we all just settle for MMO's that are actually good? Like EVE Online? They advertised so rampantly here on The Escapist last year.

console interface for a pc mmo? never going to work. Dc universe tries the same thing, to make the pc game more like the ps3 version, to bad this is going to flop on pc too.
Final Fantasy XI, their first online Final Fantasy, worked just fine with its interface, which is very similar to this one. In XI, the interface was essentially the same on 360, PS3, and PC. I never heard complaints from anybody about how it functions.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, I forgot to go back and edit this into my first post >.>;
Pfffftt Hahaha! Im sorry but people have been compaining about the PC XI interface ever since before it came out.

Yes it functions. Execpt you can't acutally use your mouse with the UI in XI. you have to learn a whole new way of doing things which is best done keyboard only. For a PC interface this is shooting your game, not only in the foot, but in both legs too.

In related news, FFXIV will continue to suck for an indefinate period.
You might be right, considering the people I played with were long-term players who, like me, just got used to the interface with time. I functioned just fine with the mouse, though I was young when I started, so maybe as my brain was developing I grew a tumor that allowed me to use it without frustration.

In any case, I'll still be starting it after Christmas, so I'll see for myself. And if it does flop, then at least I won't be the one who purchased the game.

I didn't have any problem with XI's PC controls, I think they reactivated the part of my brain used to not having enough conventional memory free to use a mouse.

If you've got about a billion hours (I watched this when recently house-locked due to a cold that seriously kicked my ass), this is a really IN DEPTH explanation of why this game fails for just about every single reason ever.

Seriously, watch at least 1 or 2 parts. [http://www.youtube.com/user/BlueXephos#p/c/561514793F6CB99F/0/aF7vrQ04_q4]. Who the hell green lit this game?
Are you serious? That was just two people cracking wise at minutiae. There wasn't any explanation of anything in that video.

"All the haircuts are childish and creepy". "There's too many cutscenes". Of course! It's Final Fantasy! Who cares?

That was one of the least informative videos I've ever seen. Wasn't planning on buying based on info I've read, but I almost want to now, just to spite these two jackholes.

This game is SCREWED. This game has caused SE to bleed cash both in lost subscription money and in dev costs. Just when I though FFXII and XIII were Square's low points, THIS happens.

I find myself pretty disgusted at the amount of venomate hatred for the company, especially given how they're pretty much bending themselves over to try to make it up to the customers.

They botched up terribly, but they're owning up to it and doing pretty much everything they can for those who already spent $60-$80 on buying the game initially. People who bought All Points Bulletin doesn't have that going for them now do they?

Hopefully this marks a turnaround for the numbered franchise. In spite of disasters like FFXIII and FFXIV, they've managed to create some pretty strong gems in Dissidia and other, smaller scale titles. If it took this much disaster for them to check their egos at the door and work their way into becoming quality products again, then it's for the better. In spite if the profound sense of disillusionment and betrayal at the last few numbered titles Square Enix is still a quality developer. And one of the few still capable of funding the development costs to have high quality productions.

Given they're the publisher behind the Tomb Raider revamp, I wouldn't wish so much ill on them. Honestly, I think everyone's just waiting for a turn-around and comeback at this point. Why not start by fixing the mess they made with FFXIV?

yea...friend of mine got it, kept insisting I try it, so I did...never again. This game really had no redeeming value. That, and I simply cannot play a game where catgirl is a playable race.

This game's in bad territory. A bad start and a shaky game in dire need of improvement isn't the best way to get a good subscription-base working. They've got pretty harsh competition too, things aren't looking good.

It would probably be wise to go F2P, or at least have it as an option. Recently it's proven to be a viable alternative. When compared to the likes of WoW and other paid games, FFXIV is lagging way behind. But compared to the inundation of Korean F2P games, it has a good chance at survival.

It could always turn it around with some unexpected brilliance in the near future, but it might be too late by then to bring in the player commitment it needs.

EDIT: However, I would still like to play it, if not for the knowledge that it'll become subscription based, and that most of the people I know wouldn't be interested.

I think they should cut their losses and move on.

They also should stop pushing the yaoi fan girl character designs. I under stand they have a culture they're representing, but...Vanille. *shudders*

Also still pissed at them making Cloud a whiny little *****.

Sounds to me like it already has.

If it does, I wouldn't drop a single tear. Their latest games have been shit anyways if you ask me.

Then again, they should create more CGI movies, they are amazing with those.
Do you mean like, more movies based on past games? Like a FFVIII prequel about Ultimecia's rise to power or, an FFVI movie of some kind? I'd get behind that. I liked Birth by Sleep and, Star Ocean: The Last Hope but FFXIII was gawd-awful. Dragon Quest IX seemed bland to me and, Dissidia could have been better. As for Final Fantasy XIV specifically, it is an MMO, a type of game I don't play anyway. I've tried DDO as that is free but it just can't hold my attention (just like Silk Road and that weird Cartoon Network thing)

Fair enough PhiMed. I thought it was appalling just watching them walk around and interact with the world. They climb on top of a GIANT mountain to fish off of as part of a quest, at one point the guys character dies and they explain how at present there's absolutely no way to revive a fallen character, and the fact that the objectives are some times a good 5/10 minutes away from each other is just baffling to me.

But whatever, different strokes for different folks. Like I said earlier, it might've helped that I was deliriously ill and bored anyways when I watched it, but I found it entertaining (mostly as, again, they tend to be extremely long winded at times).

Actually, I thought it was very informative, because I watched the game they were playing. Loading screen. Cutscene. Walk across a room. Cutscene. Cutscene. Fight a monster with a stupid sounding ability that is basically useless for the task at hand until an NPC rescues them. Cutscene. Cutscene. Talk to an NPC. Cutscene. Talk to an NPC. Cutscene. Get first quest: walk to a rock that is twenty minutes away. Get to rock. That's it for the quest, to complete it they have to now walk another twenty minutes back.

FFXIV is basically the MMO of FFXIII. The game looks like it resents that at some point it's going to have to let the player do something besides watch cutscenes.

I had very high hopes for FFXIV. It was actually one of the games on my list to try out. Though I am not sure if I want to do that. I really hope, for the sake of the Future of FF games. That FFXIV will be fixed in time, before it loses it's edge.

If only Square actually listened to the beta testers before releasing the game, they wouldn't have had the problems they do now...

Hahahaha.

FFI - Combat seemed to come pretty early from my recollection
FFII - Didn't play.
FFIII - I played the gameboy remake, which featured a fair amount of early cutscene if I recall correctly, but it eventually got to the point where I was playing the game.
FFIV - I think this started with you in combat on your airship? Don't really remember at this point.
FFV - Don't remember at all.
FFVI - pretty much opened with combat, with you and your two handlers butchering the defenders of a town.
FFVII - started with a cutscene and now holy crap I'm invading this factory fighting people and planting a bomb.
FFVIII - I don't remember, I think that one started with mostly talking and walking around before it got to combat.
FFIX - Ok, mostly cutscenes.
FFX - Cutscenes followed by fighting my way out of a town that was exploding or something
FFXI - Did not play.
FFXII - Short cutscene followed by getting into combat.
FFXIII - All I remember is cutscenes from the beginning, but eventually there was combat. I'm pretty sure. Or maybe it was cutscenes of combat. I suppose I could replay the start to check, but that would require replaying any portion of FFXIII, which I've pretty much vowed to never do again.
FFXIV - It's been forty minutes and he's been in one fight, where he was completely useless.

So, no, FFXIV is not the first time I've seen a FF, but it is the worst offender in a long trend of making these 'games' not games at all, but movies which begrudge the player his presence.

Bringing in F2P will be more or less a complete waste, as SE knows what kind of people like their games.

The FF franchise is there to cater to a niche marcket, and those people are most likely to just wait until it is fixed before going back, and they WILL go back.

Those same niche people will have NO PROBLEM paying for the product that they want, even so far as to pay a premuim for services.

CCP is probably the most succesful niche mmo developer with EVE. Last i remember, their subscription rate was more expensive than general MMO's, but I know alot of people there that have multiple subscripton accounts (i know one person that has 6 paid accounts which is over $100 us/month)
