If you've got about a billion hours (I watched this when recently house-locked due to a cold that seriously kicked my ass), this is a really IN DEPTH explanation of why this game fails for just about every single reason ever.

Seriously, watch at least 1 or 2 parts. [http://www.youtube.com/user/BlueXephos#p/c/561514793F6CB99F/0/aF7vrQ04_q4]. Who the hell green lit this game?
Are you serious? That was just two people cracking wise at minutiae. There wasn't any explanation of anything in that video.

"All the haircuts are childish and creepy". "There's too many cutscenes". Of course! It's Final Fantasy! Who cares?

That was one of the least informative videos I've ever seen. Wasn't planning on buying based on info I've read, but I almost want to now, just to spite these two jackholes.
Actually, I thought it was very informative, because I watched the game they were playing. Loading screen. Cutscene. Walk across a room. Cutscene. Cutscene. Fight a monster with a stupid sounding ability that is basically useless for the task at hand until an NPC rescues them. Cutscene. Cutscene. Talk to an NPC. Cutscene. Talk to an NPC. Cutscene. Get first quest: walk to a rock that is twenty minutes away. Get to rock. That's it for the quest, to complete it they have to now walk another twenty minutes back.

FFXIV is basically the MMO of FFXIII. The game looks like it resents that at some point it's going to have to let the player do something besides watch cutscenes.
Again, it's Final Fantasy. If you're surprised by these things, then this is probably your first time with the franchise.

I had very high hopes for FFXIV. It was actually one of the games on my list to try out. Though I am not sure if I want to do that. I really hope, for the sake of the Future of FF games. That FFXIV will be fixed in time, before it loses it's edge.

If only Square actually listened to the beta testers before releasing the game, they wouldn't have had the problems they do now...

Hahahaha.

FFI - Combat seemed to come pretty early from my recollection
FFII - Didn't play.
FFIII - I played the gameboy remake, which featured a fair amount of early cutscene if I recall correctly, but it eventually got to the point where I was playing the game.
FFIV - I think this started with you in combat on your airship? Don't really remember at this point.
FFV - Don't remember at all.
FFVI - pretty much opened with combat, with you and your two handlers butchering the defenders of a town.
FFVII - started with a cutscene and now holy crap I'm invading this factory fighting people and planting a bomb.
FFVIII - I don't remember, I think that one started with mostly talking and walking around before it got to combat.
FFIX - Ok, mostly cutscenes.
FFX - Cutscenes followed by fighting my way out of a town that was exploding or something
FFXI - Did not play.
FFXII - Short cutscene followed by getting into combat.
FFXIII - All I remember is cutscenes from the beginning, but eventually there was combat. I'm pretty sure. Or maybe it was cutscenes of combat. I suppose I could replay the start to check, but that would require replaying any portion of FFXIII, which I've pretty much vowed to never do again.
FFXIV - It's been forty minutes and he's been in one fight, where he was completely useless.

So, no, FFXIV is not the first time I've seen a FF, but it is the worst offender in a long trend of making these 'games' not games at all, but movies which begrudge the player his presence.

This game's in bad territory. A bad start and a shaky game in dire need of improvement isn't the best way to get a good subscription-base working. They've got pretty harsh competition too, things aren't looking good.

It would probably be wise to go F2P, or at least have it as an option. Recently it's proven to be a viable alternative. When compared to the likes of WoW and other paid games, FFXIV is lagging way behind. But compared to the inundation of Korean F2P games, it has a good chance at survival.

It could always turn it around with some unexpected brilliance in the near future, but it might be too late by then to bring in the player commitment it needs.

EDIT: However, I would still like to play it, if not for the knowledge that it'll become subscription based, and that most of the people I know wouldn't be interested.
Bringing in F2P will be more or less a complete waste, as SE knows what kind of people like their games.

The FF franchise is there to cater to a niche marcket, and those people are most likely to just wait until it is fixed before going back, and they WILL go back.

Those same niche people will have NO PROBLEM paying for the product that they want, even so far as to pay a premuim for services.

CCP is probably the most succesful niche mmo developer with EVE. Last i remember, their subscription rate was more expensive than general MMO's, but I know alot of people there that have multiple subscripton accounts (i know one person that has 6 paid accounts which is over $100 us/month)

Perhaps re-releasing FF7 would help as far as cash. ;P

Given the initial product's poor release, the following trial extensions, and up to this, it looks like SquEnixels is trying pretty damn hard to keep their customers from outright quitting if it weren't for its already latent game flaws. Despite this positive effort on their part, it seems like they're chasing a ghost of what the game could have been given an extended development time. This isn't just a rocky start to try and catch up to already established games, but rather, this is trying to get to the point where those established games even started out from almost.

Will you all SHUT UP about XIII. Every square enix/FF thread I go into, tons of people use it as a way to hate and troll on the game.

I know people are intitled to their own opinion, but this seems more like blatant hate than an opinion.
