sounds like FF2/SaGa Frontier's upgrading system. That was horrible and did nothing to lessen the grind.
and Fortesque, a Final Fantasy can be good because of ummm... story? gameplay? actually being fun? I dunno, anything but forcing a player to play one part of the game over and over again just so he can have a chance at another part of the game.
