Finding it impossible to avoid Borderlands 2, help!

So I have been running into a bit of a dilemma as of late. I bought the original borderlands, then the GOTY edition that had all the DLC included and loved every minute of the game, whether I was playing solo or with friends. I find the game to be great all around; great gameplay, funny characters, and very cathartic to just sit down and play for a while.

As I'm sure everyone is aware, Borderlands 2 came out a week ago and looks just as amazing. Problem is, I don't think that I want to end up buying the game twice again, and with the breadth of DLC that has been announced and will be announced it SEEMS to be the better option to just wait it out for the GOTY edition and get the "complete" game then.

So, fellow escapists, I ask for your help! Is the game great enough to buy on its own merit despite the slew of DLC that is incoming (for reference I am not that big a fan of DLC as a whole, I miss the days of getting complete games on a cartridge/disc), or wait it out for the "complete" edition, with some tips on what to do in the meantime to avoid such temptation!

You can get well over 100 hours in the base game of Borderlands 2, its fully complete and is great fun. If you liked the original then you should love this one. There is also no guarantee that a complete set will come out and even then it could take years since the last story dlc is coming sometime June 2013. So unless you're strapped for cash I would say buy it.

I have read about this, and while it looks like a good deal, its an additional 30 dollars if I recall. Also, didn't they announce yesterday that there might/would be DLC outside of the season pass being released?

Buying a 60 dollar game at launch day has always been a serious monetary commitment to me; yes the game has a beginning, middle, and end, but I can not find any justification in day 1 DLC and on disc DLC, as it just reeks of content cut for profit. I wholeheartedly miss the days of getting everything a game had to offer on launch day, and while some DLC is great and worth a purchase, a game company will find me a much more loyal customer that will buy a game on day one if they simply give me the complete game and none of the DLC BS in one package.

That's a misconception though. If dlc didn't exist today, like back in the NES days, then the dlc we have today wouldn't just be in the game at no extra cost, it just wouldn't exist. So no games haven't changed from back then, we just now have the opportunity to have more of a game after we buy, that is completely optional.

first of all the game is complete, all dlc will be made after the game is released hence you will get the full game if you buy it now, hell if you pre-ordered like I did you will get the fifth class.

on to your question, yes the game is good, very good, awesome in fact, you should buy it. but if you're gonna be butthurt about not having all the dlc for free then you might as well wait and not inevitably bother us when the goty comes out.

From what I've read, they're referring to such things as the Mechromancer which was always content that was to be exclusive to the Premium Club members (i.e. those who pre-ordered from Gamestop). The big DLCs (along the lines of Knoxx or Zombie Island) will be part of the season pass.

Honestly thats a personal call. $60 might not mean much to one person, and then $60 can mean the difference between eating one night a week or not for a different person.

In my personal opinion, I dont think Borderlands 2 was worth a full $60. its more like a $40 game. That said if you really want to avoid buying the game twice then wait. Next year when the complete or GOTY edition comes out grab it

Also, the game is awesome, the DLC won't be something that's cut out, it's something made after the game went gold, ergo, not part of the main game.

Imagine Borderlands 1 but better, with more guns, more consistent humour, less bugs[footnote]Although there is one small side-quest bug but that can be fixed by reloading the save if it occurs.[/footnote] and an actual story to it. They even explain what the fuck happened in BL1 too.

So then expansion packs like the Lord of Destruction for Diablo 2, or whatever that one for Baldurs Gate was called are evil too, since all they are is more content after the game that you have to pay for, only difference is you had to buy a physical copy.

Thats different though, none of the dlc being made for Borderlands 2 is locked on the disk, its all after the fact. So while on disk dlc is pretty sketchy this is not an example of it.

Did you even play the original Borderlands DLC?

They weren't just tacked on pieces of fluff, they were fully fleshed out add ons, much like the DLC for Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I don't think Halo 3 or Reach had GOTY editions, despite releasing multiple pieces of DLC.

Yeah GotY is just a title, a reason to pack everything previously released into one purchasable package.

If if anything, it's based on some vague unquantifiable level of 'popularity'.

The big DLC's are(if it follows BL1 suite)going to be out and out mini expansions. They are not thrown together, insubstantial cash grabs. Even Moxxi's Arena, though I disliked it, had a LOT of content for folks who like that kind of thing.

I'll most likely buy the big DLC's, the small ones though I'm not sure about yet.

Seriously people, how is DLC evil? Yes, Day One DLC and disc-locked DLC are obnoxious and I get the hate for that. But DLC that comes out later, like the DLC for Borderlands 2? How is that wrong? It's not any different from expansion packs? Either way it's buying more content for the game after it released. And unlike an expansion pack, where you pay a flat fee for all the content whether you want it or not, you get to pick what you want to pay for. I agree that some companies abuse it at times, but it's not evil on principle, and DLC for Borderlands 1 was mostly more than worth it. I look forward to the DLC for BL2 and will probably get the season pass.
