This feature doesn't sound particularly important, but it also doesn't sound like there's anything about it that warrants cutting. Seems like yet another case of Nintendo not quite grasping the subtleties of western culture.

On a side note, all of this has made me curios about just how different the Japanese relationship with homosexuality is from our own.
It's actually pretty vital for the Nore path. You can't grind on that one, and if affection scores aren't high enough you can lose characters. The petting was a way around that.

It's a quick way to gain stat bonuses, and on one of the paths it was the only way to max out affection scores.

So yes, people are going to miss this, and it was holding (one of) the game(s) together.
I'm assuming Nintendo has enough brain cells to rub together to put in a way to get around this. If not, well, there's a good reason to pass on this game.
It's not Nintendo cutting this out though. It's the localization company doing that, and given just how badly a localization team can screw things up, I'd say it's not outside the realm of possibility they're gonna screw this up BAD! https://www.reddit.com/r/vita/comments/2a046m/reminder_not_to_buy_any_nisa_games/

Heck, some of the voice acting I've seen in the English version gives me enough reason to be concerned.

Yeah...except the localization team is part of Nintendo of America. So yes it is Nintendo. And nothing in that link is connected to anything here, the people who screwed up those games have nothing to do with this. It's like saying "Games can be bad because some unrelated people made bad games so there's a chance this game will be bad."

Well I don't see the connection between bad voice acting and breaking the game, so you're going to have connect things for me on that one.

to be fair no, but how many more things are they going to cut?
I dunno, how many more stupid things are there in this game that just don't work outside of Japan any country that knows how to talk to women like normal human beings and have a healthy relationship
FTFY

Seriously, why does Japan have so much cringey sexual desperation leaking through all of their media?
You call what's going on these days a healthy relationship? America has a 50% divorce rate, and it's starting to feel like the genders are on the verge of civil war at times.

We aren't exactly in a position to judge in this regard.
Verge of civil war? Wot? Cut down on the hyberbole man.

Actually considering that we're not the extreme patriarchy that they are (Probably a reason why their divorce rates are so low) I don't see why we can't judge. Also I don't see what divorce rates have to do with portrayal of sexuality in media.

Extreme Patriarchy? Freaking REALLY dude? Look, I'll fully admit Japan has issues with gender Equality, but to call them an extreme patriarchy, especially after calling me out for hyperbole, just rings of someone who has no freaking clue what Japan is like these days. I'm guessing you think that divorce in Japan can only go through if the husband allows it or something like that?

Out of curiosity though, if Japan is a Extreme Patriarchy, what does that make the Middle East? Hyper Extreme Patriarchy?

I wasn't aware that saying something was "extreme" was on the same level as saying that genders were at war. At the best, at the VERY best, I'm exaggerating. Your claim of gender civil war doesn't really have any basis in current events.

No, it's also an extreme patriarchy. Extreme doesn't mean an exact finite level. It simply means "very great in degree". So considering Japan's multiple shortcomings in gender inequality, especially for a first world country, I fail to see how I'm hyperbolic. Then again I'm one of those unpopular people who thinks that the patriarchy is still a thing in other first world countries, just not nearly to the same level.

Sounds like a cludgy bit of bad writing to fill in a hole in the mechanics.

Somehow, I rather doubt a country with a show like Sazae-San could count as anything CLOSE to an extreme patriarchy. Especially considering how long it's lasted.

Then again, considering you think the Patriarchy is even a thing in most of the first world these days DOES speak volumes of where you stand on things. Seriously man, we live in a world where "manspreading" is a thing. The patriarchy died screaming in the US a LONG time ago.

It's mostly a sign that the people doing the localizing may not actually have a clue as to what the hell they're doing. Voice Work in this country hasn't been THAT bad in a long while, so it's kind of inexcusable at this point. Add in a number of name changes that were completely unnecessary, (such as Marx -> Xander, Leon -> Leo, Cyrus -> Silas, Harold -> Arthur) and I think you can see why I don't want these idiots messing about with the code any more then they absolutely have to.

Actually, it's mostly a way to help gamers who DON'T plan out every single movement ten steps ahead. You could get everyone out alright without it, but you'd have to plan everything out to the letter.

Which is fitting considering that route is supposed to most resemble the old games.

I'm sorry, you need a little more than a single piece of media to disprove something like this. Especially considering that from what I looked up, it harkens back to a more "traditional" time. And "traditional" times have a tendency to have women in more subservient roles.

For example. In America, there are countless restrictions being placed women's rights to control their own bodies by constantly closing abortion clinics and making it so that the few that stay open utterly stonewall them (And that's without getting into how some people actually talked about kidnapping women who wanted to get abortions) http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/14347/antiabortion-christian-activist-urges-false-imprisonment-of-women-seeking-abortions

Women can be denied certain positions on the off chance that they'll just go off and get pregnant, have a tendency to be harassed online for being female, can't breastfeed their own babies because it's lewd, in fact they can't take their tops off in public because of bullshit, still are faced with double standards about having sex, the old Madonna whore complex, are supposed to just always keep an eye on their drinks and bags and go out with a friend because apparently they should always expect that someone is about to rape them (According to this very website!) and many other things. I fail to see how it died screaming when there are so many unfair elements of society still alive. It's like racism. Not front and center, but there.

"These people" are the same people that have been localizing Fire Emblem for years. And the evidence that you have that they don't know what they're doing are name changes and one bad line. I find this a little insubstantial.

I see. Well then cutting it was a stupid idea; it's basically inoffensive, and apparently it's important for game balance. You'd have to reach pretty far to contrive something perverse from cuddling.

Or, and just stay with me here, you could fix the relationship values so you don't need to schedule your elite warriors for their post-battle petting session.

It's weird.

Not often agree with censorship but for once I am quite happy. They have done well.
