During my (short) time on Escapist, I've noticed that alot of people really like Firefly and Serenity. From what people say, it sounds vey good. But (if you do) what do you like about it? And do you think that I should buy the series for £12.00 ($17.20)?
The biggest plus for this whole series is the fact that Joss Whedon takes sci-fi seriously. And not melodramatic seriously, but real-life seriously. The focus of the show is the characters. And these people just happen to exist in a world of interplanetary travel with all its assorted problems, but they deal with all these problems as people actually might, not as characters in a movie might. There are no Master Chiefs here, no Vin Diesels, no Luke Skywalker Neos with mystical weapons. All those are of course fine, but it's very nice to see a story that throws real people into a fantastic setting and lets the audience see what it might really be like if they themselves were 'up there.' Joss Whedon is always very good at crafting characters and dialogue based in reality, and that's what he does here, plus with spaceships.
Spaceships, horses, and Wild West-type music. This is, after all, a space western, inspired by the original concept for the first Star Trek. Good Westerns have traditionally been stories about realistic people in dramatic situations, and that's exactly what Whedon crafts here, but now it's all backed by space.
The writing is fantastic. The acting is fantastic. Gina Torres is extremely hot, and Alan Tudyk is always fun to watch. Get it, and be converted.
