I was just wondering if I was the only one on this website who has not seen Firefly. Also tell me what is so great about it that makes everyone love it so much.

EDIT: I'll probably watch it tomorrow or whenever I'm not busy. Hopefully it will live up to what everyone keeps telling me.

Good writing, good casting, good chemistry between the characters, wit and charm, real emotional depth, and an interesting universe based on some sound ideas about how American and China might band together to escape a dying Earth and create a new home in another solar system.

Plus, people swear in Chinese. ^^ It's neat.

I mentioned it before, but "great cast" can't be overlooked. Most of the cast members ended up staring in other TV shows, but where unknowns before Firefly.

I saw an episode or two which seemed pretty "meh", and the movie, which was alright the first time.

But...yeah, don't see what the fuss is about...without wanting to compare them to Twihards, the fanbase seems rather obsessive.

Its a damn good show, mostly for the characters, and story. Don't expect much in the way of great effects.

It's a sci-fi adventure show with a bunch of smart humor mixed in. Sound like something you'd watch? Does to me. And I did. And it was awesome.

Just DO NOT make the same mistake I made and watch the movie first. For the love of all that is good, do not do that.

I actually watched it this week, streamed from Netflix. It was okay. I am likely to draw ire for my comments. So be it.

It was about as average as you can get. The cast was decent and were starting to meld as it ended (the film Serenity actually took them a step backward there I thought). Characterization plays a large part in this. As their reactions were all over the board, it was sometimes hard to accept why a certain character did what they did. The writing was a mixed bag. Some scenes worked well, others were completely flat. Even the concept wasn't anything special (or new).

I don't really see why some people think it is so amazing. It was decent, but to me nothing to write home about. We all have our favorites. Some people like SG-1 and others can't stand it. Same for Battlestar Galactica. Pretty much everything. There is probably someone out there who thought Gigli was good too.

If it had been allowed to run a while longer the characters might actually have grown into what many people think it is. It is only 14 episodes (and the movie really). Give it a shot and see for yourself. You might enjoy it more than I did.

Firefly was really damn good...shame it didn't get the ratings to continue. THIS IS WHY WE DO NOT ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD TV SHOWS PEOPLE!

Honestly, I didn't really like it. In fact, I like very little Joss Whedon does. I wanted to like it though, really seemed like something I'd like.

It wasn't illegal downloading that did it in. It was Fox criminally mismanaging the broadcast. They aired the episodes out of order, causing much of the narrative impact to be lost on viewers, as many of the developments that happened in one episode we seemingly lost to the aether in the intervening week between airings. On top of that, Fox largely mismarketed it, misrepresenting the show as comedic in nature rather a more series drama with tongue in cheek humour. Thus rather than a bunch of people looking for a thoughtful well considered character drama showing up to watch every week, a gaggle of folks looking for a laugh did, and no one looking for laugh should ever go to Joss Whedon. Ever. A lot of stuff went into Fox killing Firefly, but streaming wasn't one of them.

Thanks for reminding me, I just realized its time my bi-annual rewatching of Firefly.
It has all the elements of a good show, drama, narrative, comedy and whatnot. Assuming you watch them in the right order. *cough*Fox*cough*

I think a problem with peoples expectations comes from all the hype, it was a decent show and one of my favourites but what I think was the most significant thing it had was potential. A lot of great tv shows only hit their stride in the 2nd or 3rd seasons producing some of their best stuff. Odds are Firefly would have gotten even better, the chemistry between the crew was getting solid, the universe was being set up and less stuff would have had to be explained, new crew might have come as others left, plot lines like the hands of blue and Reavers would have paid out. Also they had all the costuming and the set worked out, it would have been bound to be cheaper to make it after that.

I agree with what some people have said that the movie was a step back for characterisation, they had to be accessible for new viewer and so they exaggerated the characters behaviours and personalities.

Of the Scifi Adventure show stuff, I found it just... Well, it was as though the production was made with a lot of love and thoughtfulness.
Much more down-to-earth characters and the show had material that was taken more seriously than other shows, like say Andromeda. As it should have been- it was surprisingly uncheesy for a show like this and they had more dark themes, making it more drama than Lolspace.

That being said, I don't really enjoy that kinda show all that much and don't feel too strongly about it. But as I've said here, it definitely does have plenty of things going for it, and if you like space shows, you'd prolly really enjoy it.

It is an enjoyable show, with a good cast of excellent actors and characters, an interesting universe and fun plots.

It is not god's own TV series, visited upon us then stolen away by the devil as some people like to view it.

Nobody is ever the only one, you'd do well here never to ask that question. At least re-word it. As for what makes it great, here's a simple list:

1) Well-written character driven series for which Joss Whedon is renowned for.
2) Nathan Fillion.
3) Lot's of intelligent humour.
4) At least one episode that makes grown men cry.

That's the big four I guess you could say.
