Nothing: I'll agree to that assessment. I think it's entirely sober and rational, and much less sensationalized than what you posted before.

Now I'm gonna drop issue, because I'm sure I'm getting tedious- if not to you, to then to the innocent bystanders.

Whenever I hear people talking about swine flu I think of that old short on cartoon network (you know, back in the days of toonami) where a kid's head turned into a pig because he was infected with it.

So apparently my high school is the first in Mi to be affected by Swine Flu. A few students who have recently visited Mexico where reported to be sick. At first, most believed it just to be "Montezuma's Revenge" but then another teen showed signs of influenza (a complication of Swine Flu).

This sent most of the students into a panic, the rest were trying to make the possibility of a Swine Flu outbreak go away by laughing it off.

Three local news stations visited our school--one of them visited twice--and were all denied entrance to the building.

So we're first I guess. Go Woodhaven.

Hey, we might not have school for a little bit though, that's grand!
I'm glad I'm a good 50 miles away...in a small town no one's heard about...surrounded by people with rifles out the wazoo...
OH, MY GOD! THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IS COMING!!!
AAAA!
*away* Gramma! get the shotgun! the zombies are coming!
Oh, shit. AGAIN??
Yeah, Gramma. I'll call uncle Joe. He'll bring the armoured truck.
Okay. Let me grab my Knitters and my flamethrower.
Aww, not the flamethrower, gramma! Grab the UZI!
No, I don't leave the house without my flamethrower!
ugh..wait..Is my speech dictation still on? Oh shit. I hope the computer hasn't entered - *

I agree, I doubt it will become a huge problem due to medication available but people just need to realise that it is happening.
Why do I have to know? I'm not an epidemiologist or a biologist. I can't will it from infecting me, or tell it to stop. The only preventative measure I can take is not to have a vacation in Mexico City, and I can't say any plans are ruined there.

So... responding more calmly, first of all, viruses don't "evolve." They're not living creatures. They don't eat, they don't grow, they don't reproduce. The only way a virus has of propagating itself is to attach itself to a cell and inject its RNA into it to overwrite the cell's DNA. Then the cell becomes a virus factory, producing copies of the virus until it simply becomes too full and explodes, sending out millions of new viruses to infect other cells. It ~has~ to kill its host in order to propagate itself. H1N1 just did it more virulently than any other virus known to man.

In the interests of veracity I should say that my paper was not on Spanish flu proper, but on the effects of Spanish flu on the Seattle General Strike of 1919. So it's a little limited and I'm partially relying on a Stanford website. What I have in my books points to the fact that the first victims in Seattle died the night they were diagnosed.

Ah, ok. Here's an article from the National Archives.

http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/influenza-epidemic/

So sometime between "hours" and "a few days."

The great thing is that in 1976 the same H1N1 virus we're facing now killed people just as quickly. News has reported that, if you think it's sensational. The problem was it happens to be a fact. The only difference between 1919 and 1976 was that the virus didn't become a pandemic. Now it's becoming a pandemic.

Who knows, it could turn around at any point. But H1N1 is the real fucking deal.

I said absolutely nothing different in that post, but your (over)reaction to it changed.

Thank you. Talking to you has been fascinating in its pointlessness.
Wow. You're right. It is completely pointless talking to you. You failed to comprehend even one single thing I posted, didn't you?

Ah well, as I mentioned above, I'm not going to enter into a debate with you, but now because it's pretty clear that you are misinformed and completely unwilling to admit that writing a paper which tangentally touched on the Influenza pandemic of 1918 just might not make you an expert on the subject. (For example: a) go look up the debate on whether or not viruses qualify as life. b) look up the word 'evolve' in its biological usage. c) read up on the replication of viruses and how they spread, you are entirely, completely, and absolutely wrong that they have to kill the host; in fact, those that do are much less successful in nature.)

You also fail to see the difference between the hysterical nonsense of "...people were often struck with the disease walking down the street and died ~going~ to the hospital. That's the kind of disease this is. Typical time from showing symptoms to death is one day" and the more reasoned post you made above. If you are really that insensate, you are totally correct: you have completely wasted my time.

It's just a shame that you get to propogate such nonsense without anyone to force you to prove what you say when you're shooting your mouth off, because I sure as hell won't be wasting my time on reading your posts.

Oh, and just FYI, while my avatar is in fact a subtle selfdirected dig at the fact that I'm a passionate person, you should always remember that just because a person may react strongly to something does not mean that they are wrong. Also, you should take a logic and reason course at your school; then perhaps you would know that Ad Hominem attacks are lame and only make you look like a punk.

Well, I don't have school today, so I'll be hitting up the TF2 for some marathon gaming.

("Daezd {GrizzlyBar}" Is my steam name, hit me up and we'll play sometime!)

Thanks for the "I hope you're not infected" posts, and for the very long discussion between Rag and solid. No, really, thanks...This is the only forum that I can really rely on for my well-written, if not anything else ;], [looooong[/i] discussions between two individuals. I do enjoy a good tongue lashing!

Anyway, to all of my fans out there, I'm not showing signs of infection! Woo, go me!

Can one of the mods make an "Official Swine Flu Thread"? This is the sixth one. It's getting ridiculous.
Its not overly bad. Its helping folks who are afraid of something they don't understand, by hopefully providing them with well researched facts(sometimes) coupled with the ability to express their concerns/confusion in a semi-supporting environment. Humans fear what they don't understand.

Yeah, I'm sorry though, that I haven't been more sensitive to you.

Crap! Oh my god! That word's the real infection.
Nah, it's completely fine...it is just a harmless flu!

Wow. Be sure to wash your hands. I can't imagine being in the first school to be part of a major disease related panic. Enjoy your time off and remember to write down the details of the occasion, either you'll be telling your kids about the dumb little panic, or your'll be telling the last survivors about the Before-Time.

A spanish flu relitive.
Lets hope we kill that bastard quick before it mutates. I just remembered the photos I saw of people dying in the streets and parks turned into quarrentine hospices...

My love of awful photography strikes again

Exactly what IS Swine Flu? All I know about it is the name...
A complication of Influenza I believe. Just Wikipedia it. It was supposed to affect only pigs from what I've heard, but seems that it has mutated to affect humans too. They are already working on a vaccine, so hopefully in about 1 month we're going to have that damn vaccine and this Flu will never be talked of again.

anything like a killer flu or virus that we'll really have to worry about...we won't hear about...till it's too late...if you think this kind of thing is strangely interesting i highly recommend Chuck Palahniuk's book "Rant"...it's full of interesting little tidbits about historical outbreaks...and the story is very good as well

The stupidity of this Swine Flu panic disgusts me. It is a flue virus, it gives you the flu, people with functioning immune systems are safe.
