Doesn't sit right with me. There's a lot of people in the world, I don't get the need to keep it in the family.

You're talking about first cousin *marriage*, right? Why is everyone bringing up the topic of first cousins having children together? Getting married doesn't automatically mean you're going to have a child. It's a related issue, yes, but most people here don't seem to be discussing marriage specifically, which is the main topic of the thread.

So yeah, when it comes to reproduction, it's probably best not to with a first cousin (slightly increased risk of birth defects as mentioned earlier), but disregarding societal taboos, I don't see what's wrong with attraction/(recreational) sex/marriage. A lot of people *aren't* attracted to their cousins or second cousins or whatever, but if you are (and they feel the same), what's so bad about that?

Don't worry about that; the Doctor showed us that they were actually all werewolves.

Well, personally I have a very close relationship with my cousins, and many of them are like brothers and sisters to me, so from my perspective... eww.

Overall, I dunno. I guess if that's what really floats your boat then I guess I shouldn't judge, but the idea definitely creeps me out.

That is what I have always thought, like the first child isn't going to be born with 6 toes and 8 fingers.

Didn't royals and the higher classes way back when they inbred like crazy 'cos they didn't want commoner blood mixed in with there royal line ...?

I think it is a bit too close for comfort but I don't get why it is illegal, what right does the government have to say who you can and can't marry? Isn't that a personal thing?
Yes they did, and they also had quite a few nasty health problems that came with it.

The Egyptian royal family was particularly bad about it. Take a close look at some of the depictions of the Egyptian royals from shortly before the Romans took the region over. You may notice a few odd things about their heads.

Frankly, it is a bit tough to predict the effects of incest. It is entirely possible for first cousins to bring out a nasty recessive disease within one generation. It is also entirely possible for brothers and sisters within a family line to pair up for ten or more generations with little to no genetic abnormality.

I'm actually a little surprised that something like this would pop up in Sweden. Sweden and Norway together have a bit of what is known as the "founder effect" going on. Their gene pool is relatively constricted by comparison to mainland Europe, meaning there is a greater chance for recessive genes to show up in a case like this. They are not nearly as bad off in that respect as a few other places are, such as Finland or the Amish communities in the US, but it is something they need to keep in mind.

Less insane and more... GOOD GOD, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU?! I refer to Charles II (last Habsburg king of Spain)... same with Cleopatra VII's family, and you really have to wonder at what stroke of luck she turned out to be attractive... (her parents were siblings and grandparents were uncle and niece, AFAIK).

most of the British royal family is inbred as fuck and they seem kinda mostly fine :p
Comparatively, the British Royal family wasn't/isn't that inbred... only Victoria/Albert were first cousins... other than that, not all that bad... QE2/DoE are second cousins-once removed... *shrug* not that it matters much...

I personally have no problem with it....then again I don't really care if you want to fuck a sheep, your grandmother, a tree, dress up in a furry suit, have someone shove stuff inside your body, or dance around in a tutu, playing with sparklers, with your balls in a vice singing yankee doodle dandee.

My general belief on sex and fetishes is that if both parties are adult and everyone is in agreement that this is what they want to do, fine, do it.

So if you want to marry your cousin, then what the fuck do I care?

Seeing as I live in the states, I'd supposed it's frowned upon (though there may be a few states where it's allowable), but so is a lot of stuff. Hell, I believe it's still illegal to commit sodomy several states...yeah -_- *sigh*.

Fuck whoever you want (so long as consent can legally be given, and is given), and have governments ignore marriage as a quaint religious institution, I say... but for the sake of any make-believe bullshit you want to name, don't have kids with someone that closely related to you. In fact, try to get someone with different color skin from you if you're gonna breed.

Because it confuses familial roles, which is a huge no-no in society. Think about it, isn't that song I'm my own grandpa absurd? Wouldn't it be confusing, even disgusting to have a family tree like that? I'm not saying it should be illegal of course, I'm just saying that picking dates from the family reunion can be extremely awkward for the whole family. Incest is bad, m'kay.

BTW, the genetic reason really has never been the real reason here, nor the religious one. Incest stigma is essentially universal, though just what kinds of relationships qualify as incest depends on the family structure of the society and blue bloods have always gotten away with it because blue bloods get away with everything (there's a better answer, but... fuck).

Partly that was because of the importance of politic marriages with your neighbours. Keep doing that, and you end up inbreeding.

Well, you could say the same about gay marriage, but that hasn't cuaght on in most places. Though, gay incestuou marriage would be less problematic than straight incestuous marriage, and some places that's legal and gay marriage isn't.

Is two men having sex disgusting? The real question is, are you in position to judge them? Answer is no. Therefore, this discussion is moot, marrying your cousin is not my business, you can do whatever you want. I won't say anything.

It's called cultural relativism, folks. We're all supposed to practice it, right? Riiiiight?

Also Haemophilia and sterility became fairly common.

I'm of the belief two consenting adults can do whatever they want so long as it doesn't harm anyone else. People determine law and culture, therefore it is wrong to assume what they say and think is always right. If it were to be proven first-cousin marriage would destroy society or bring harm to many people, then perhaps I would change my mind. Until then, perhaps governments should stay out of people's lives and stop trying to control people.
