My first fps was a nice DOS game by the name of Star Wars Dark Forces. I still try and play it on my laptop every once in a while too.

Star Wars: Dark Forces.

I wasn't very good at it, and I could never get past the early sewer level (because the little eye-ball creatures in the muck freaked me out), but I still remember liking it.

It was definitely either Doom or Wolfenstein. I'm thinking I played Doom first because I remember a friend of my Dad's installing it along with some old western-style RPG on our computer a long time ago. I was used to playing the NES and I couldn't get my head around playing games with a keyboard instead of a gamepad.

Doom. Then, about half an hour later, Quake. It was a revelatory experience to someone brought up on Sonic the hedgehog.
To me, it was revelatory for someone with no real access to games...

Doom was almost certainly the first I played at a friend's house, I remember having a lot of fun with that chainsaw, and making me very excited for 3D environments. The first shooter I played for any real length of time though was Goldeneye. I saved up for fricking ages to get an N64, and I played that game for months. It probably took me about a week to get past facility.
I was insanely terrible at games back then; my previous gaming experience was a second hand NES with about 4 games, and a lend of a Mega Drive with sonic and Ecco the Dolphin. I never got past Marble zone, and I also remember eventually getting to world 4 in Mario and being insanely happy to have gotten that far.

Like I said, pretty bad. :D

Edit: well, that got a little off topic. I tend to do that when I reminisce...

Halo. If I remember correctly I only ever played it on easy up until recently, and I still had a hard time. I sucked at games back then.

Probably Halo 3 I was never allowed FPSes as a kid because my parents thought they were all "Incredibly violent" so I didn't play them until I was 14 with my friend's copy of Halo 3. I'm 16 now so in retrospect I haven't been playing FPSes for very long maybe thats why I'm so bad at them.

Perfect Dark, and how I do love that game. Still play it for the N64 :)
I think for me it was either this or Goldeneye. Fuck, both those games were amazing. Unfortunately, my parents believed that playing said games would turn me into a serial murderer, so I had to play them at friends houses and so don't have them to play on my 64 now :(

Same. I thanked the FPS gods for bringing such incredible games into existence.
