You know, it's times like this that I wished people with higher standards who were more willing to respectfully criticize were involved in these face-to-face deals. That'd be more appreciated rather than hints at general concerns anyone could point out (getting the character right and whatever other relative nonsense got pulled up in the various gameplay showcasing interviews I've seen, including this one) and overall approval otherwise.
Considering how far they are in development with what we've seen, this isn't up to par. I mean Platinum is already put on a pedestal and this would be a great opportunity to convince skeptics like me that they actually deserve it for anything besides Bayonetta. Looking at what it seems we're getting with the simplicity given to the fighting, I'm just not impressed.[footnote]The simplified choreography this sequel TV series dishes out over its predecessor in the name of street fighting and boxing, still takes the win on this[/footnote] I mean I see some iconic moves, the Air Scooter and that water dome thing, but I don't feel a real sense of flow unique to each bending type. There is some match up to the real martial artist foundations of the bending, I suppose. You've got some properly set up punches and kicks to the very basic general attacks that would match what we've seen on TV. They have mentioned how each bending style has its advantages in terms of range, power, and versatility. That's about it though; it translates on too superficial a level for me. I mean when I see those finishing moves, especially the fire based one, I see an unfortunate prioritizing on style and flashiness over substance that would have actually translated into a higher quality game. I'm sure from Platinum's viewpoint that flashiness works fine here and helps give the fans a sense that it is still a Platinum title. And, I'm sure they think they've got the property down, yet, to me, it's because they don't have a grasp on the full idea of what this property is.
Then there's some more minor hiccups I've got too. In regards to the look, with the platforms this is coming out on, there's a bit of touch up they could have done and I'm not sure I understand how they couldn't have made the locations a little more dense. When a mecha tank is destroyed you see its remains after the smoke clears with all the parts scattered rather than getting a look at the actual destruction process: It's just an automatic transition. Again, it's not coming out on platforms that can't handle these things. I agree with everyone on the glowing orbs and those runner sections. Those are kind of a bother too. These nitpicks in some way all contribute to this just feeling too "gamey" and with all the increased chatter on achieving minimalism and escapism in games that's a pity too.
It looks like a fun distraction either way and admittedly my issues with this transferred over from when I thought it was going to be a bigger title then it turned out to be. Even for the smaller title it is, I'm just worried it's not the quality it should be at. I'm torn between getting this as is when it comes out and hoping for enough improvements by then, getting it at a small discount, or not getting it at all and letting the property suffer when it may have finally found its groove. Sigh, I'm just tired of seeing this property suffer for all the wrong reasons.
