When I hear someone say Germany, I think of the Holy Roman Empire, Martin Luther, Friedrich Nietzsche.. and the awesomely authentic German restaurant my best friend and I frequent once a month, though not necessarily in that order.

I'm too lazy to look through every page of this thread just to see if this has been mentioned (maybe I will when I have more time), but the first thing I think when someone says Germany is Blind Guardian. Specifically Hansi Kursch (the lead singer). Their show was the most fun I've ever had at a concert. I'm convinced that Hansi has robot lungs, and therefore never has to breathe, but is still able to talk and sing. That's the only explanation for why he never runs out of breath, especially during Mirror Mirror.

Strudel, then funnel cake, even though they probably aren't even German.
Then beer. Then the flag. Then thick, lustrous mustaches. Then Von Kaiser from 'Punchout!'.
Then I think of 8-bit sound effects and the train of thought kind of goes off the rails.

I know the game- and filmindustry trys very hard to keep everyone thinking that germans are still Nazis. But I´ve got fate that the escapists think different, so tell me (if you don´t mind) what is the first thing that comes to your mind exept a big empty cinema with zombies in brown uniforms and obvious poses attacking you (and maybe a friend).
Turkish immigrants that are racist to German people

Oktoberfest. BMW's and Mercedes-Benz. Also me and my friend's awful attempts at German. All we can say is "Das ist gut." "Sehr gut." "Nicht gut" "NEINE!" and that's about it.

In order that they occurred...

Country, language, strange censorship, war, Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army, Angela Merkel, and David Hasselhoff.

Lovely place, lovely people. Been there twice (from UK).

I think it's interesting that during the war, with all the anti-German propaganda aimed at adults, the radio shows and comics aimed at children tried to show a different side to Germany, that it wasn't all bad, keeping in mind that the war will end and relations will eventually be normalised.

The problem is that that will be the first thing that comes to almost everyone's mind, even most Germans (if only because they are tired of living under the Third Reich's shadow). Someone will actually have to try to think of something after Hitler so they can say, "Hitler isn't the first thing to think about when you think of Germany."

In any case, congratulations on breaking Godwin's Law [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law] by making the entire thread a subversion of it.
