Dammit false alarm.

I always thought it was them trying to justify their purchase. They decided they wanted a console, and they decided it was the best, and if you didn't buy the same console, then you made the mistake in your purchase.

The problem is that both sides think that, and then the flame war starts as they try to convince the other side, with logic, comparisons, insults, insults, ... and immaturity.

So like yeah.

Get this straight, I do not want to start one, I want to discuss one.

I think that each console is as good as it's opponent, even though I do have a 360. I want people's opinions on why it started, and if it matters to you.

One of my thoughts is that if somebody has something, and it's competing with something else, and they can't get it; then they must prove it not worthy of getting. It might be because they don't have money for another console, or just that they are stubborn.

I'm not asking about how good the argument is either way, I'm asking WHY (you think) it's like this.
It's a result of the insecurity in your purchase, mixed with the human need to belong.

We recognise ourselves as being in a certain group, then our mind will conclude that our group is superior in order to boost our self-esteem without having to manipulate our view of ourselves.

IMO, all console gamers desperately need the opposing console to survive and compete. Mankind always performs best when it's competing against itself, and having a rival console of similar success leads to much greater titles being developed. Constant one-upmanship is the fast-track to greatness.

Because of this, I whole heartedly support the concept of console exclusives, and hope for a long continued, and heated, console war. Fanboy flame wars are just a disappointing byproduct of this.
Honestly I think the blind fanboyism is holding them all back. When I had a ps3, it constantly had weird problems but when I asked for help online i either got called a nintendo troll or they said it doesn't matter because it's better than the RROD.
When people get this defensive about their consoles, the companies have no reason to fix the problems. Sony releases firmware that bricks a bunch of ps3s? Well according to their policy (at least at the time) they are not responsible and don't have to replace your console if the warranty ran out. The ps3 fan response was mostly "well it worked fine with me, probably just xbox fanboys trying to make ps look bad" so sony gets a pass and nobody seems to care.
It's idiotic. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all know they can leave huge flaws or problems with their console and people will blindly defend it for them.
But then again, the opposition have something to pick at. "You have that cool new exclusive? Good luck playing it with *generic problem here*." The three giants are all desperately trying to get their box in as many homes as possible, and defects do not help them. For example, the RROD was devastating to Microsoft, the amount of gamers and potential buyers they lost from that was tremendous.

There's a lot to lose by leaving major problems in your console, so unless the help site is not officially run by the company in question, they should do their best to help you. Though tech support can be pretty poor with any company, not just those three...
I really wish that mattered but it doesn't. You have a bunch of xbox fanboys who don't own and don't plan to buy a ps3 saying the firmware bricks your console and you have ps3 fanboys who don't own a 360 and don't plan too, saying you always get the RROD. If a majority of customers are willing to defend their console blindly while paying for everything they sell, you don't need to fix your problems.
Do you think the RROD is such a hard thing to fix? Seems like it's a simple design flaw that should have been fixed with their first redesign. I mean I can forgive it at first but after all the different editions (pro, elite, stuff like that) you would think they had plenty of time to figure out the problem without the pressure of beating the other console to the finish line.
Do you think all console gamers are fanboys? I'd say only about 25% are, which leaves a large amount open to influence. There's also a vast amount of casual gamers yet to buy anything of this generation. Fanboys are the ones that make themselves heard, but they aren't who Microsoft or Sony consider when they're thinking about future profit.
true but how many regular console gamers will be able to do anything when their console breaks and the company won't replace it because it's past the warranty or it doesn't have one to begin with?
Don't buy another? Great except they got the money for the first one. The average consumer will buy another because they don't want to deal with all that shit, and if they choose to "deal with it" they usually just get the runaround until they tire themselves out and quit.
They don't make money based on what you think, it's based on what you buy and how much you pay. It doesn't help sony that they have free online, most people instinctively assume the online gaming service you pay for has to be better. My point is there is no logic to it, the consumer loses and usually the companies end up losing money but that just gives them an excuse to be even more cut throat.
The whole gaming industry is vicious and corporate right now and I'm pretty close to saying fuck it all.
Well I see exactly where you're coming from, but I still support the idea that the console war is beneficial to gamers. If there was no competition, and Microsoft/Sony had a monopoly over the games market, do you really think things would get better? It would be a disaster, and would cripple the games industry.

As for the flame wars, well like I said earlier, they're just an unfortunate byproduct of this competition.

They're made to make people feel like they made the worse purchase and to reassure the person who started it that they made the right purchase. It never has anything to do with the console itself and those who argue rarely have both consoles and a balanced argument.

I like both so I'll never partake in a console flame war.

I think that its mainly because people like to compete. Someone has something, someone else has something different, they have an argument about which is better. It's not just consoles, it happens with pretty much everything. I have seen similar arguments about mobile phones, musical instruments, sunglasses, kitchen units and even clothing. I think that the intensity of this particular argument is fuelled by the number of people involved, and the fact that most of them are anonymous.

For your second question, no it doesn't bother me as I am a PC (laptop) gamer. It can, on occasion, be hilarious.

My choice is awesome and I'm with, so I should tell others about it. What do you mean you have your own choice and it differs from my product that I'm so in love with? You're wrong when you say yours is better then mine, I didn't make a bad choice because I like and so you must be wrong!

Face it, as humans we want to evangelise (no, not the sect, the act of) our choices, our shows, or books, our movies, our games, our systems to anyone we think will listen. For we love them, we think thy are great and want others to share in the joy of it or thank us for sharing it with them. Nothing wrong with this and this doesn't cause flame wars, that's left for when we don't accept others doing the same or devolve discussions into not accepting other's opinions as fully valid.

Competition is always there of course. We like to be right and think we made the right choices. So we'll defend and in some cases insult to bring down the opponent. Which is a poor way to go about things like basic entertainment and toys, of which all video games are as great as they may be.
Of course friendly discussion and debate shouldn't just be passed off. It can be fun to try and build up one system or game over the other for the sake of debating it. I've found a lot of games on PS2 to play and recommended plenty on Gamecube to me best mate simply because we do that regurally and enjoy ourselves. An argument can be good to have from time to time, as long as we keep it from being one that attacks.

I'm happy with all systems and the video game business as a whole is what I wish to promote, not one company or one hardware. I have far more fun this way for myself and with others, but I must always keep in mind video games are not for everyone and their own entertainment of choice may indeed be better for them.

Except the Phantom. That system isn't even a real system and doesn't play real games.

Damn ... guess I owe you one now.

I know I made the right choice for me, I don't play games with friends, I have been loyal to the PS consoles all my life, (most will disagree but) I preferred the line up of games at launch, free online, the cheapest one was still sexy black, MGS4, wireless controllers etc

I think some (not all!) 360 owners wanted a PS3 but found there parents couldn't afford it so got a 360 instead / 'cos it was released first so they highlight any and all flaws to show how crap it is so they don't feel too let down.

Flames wars over consoles have been going on since at least the 80's. I remember people at school bickering over which was the best: the NES or the Sega Master System. The same goes for even earlier competing systems. Later that turned into SNES vs Genesis/Mega Drive and Mario vs Sonic. Then PS1 vs Saturn vs N64. And so on.

Why do people do it? Maybe to justify their purchase, further enhanced by unfamiliarity with the competitors and perhaps a sort of envy over features/games on said competitors their own console does not have. I had a Mega Drive in the 16 bit era, but I know I always wanted a SNES for games like Super Mario World, Super Metroid, etc.

Maybe fans of a certain console believe that the more popularity their system has, the more (good) games will be developed for it. A sort of positive network effect. Not an unreasonable idea when you think about it.

I think I would've gotten a ps3 should I have had 400 more dollars, and a dislike for halo. But It does have those fancy whizz bangs, but that might mean It would be stolen as a blu-ray player and I'd never get it back.... But it does have free online, but a lot of my friends have an XBOX so what would it mean? I'd get to experience more exclusives, however less or more awesome, but then I wouldn't get XBOX exclusives; meaning Halo.
I don't think this went through my head at the time, but it's likely what would've happened should I have had thought of it.

The only way to stop flame wars is for everyone to buy every console. Personally, I only have one to go.

As for the flame wars, well like I said earlier, they're just an unfortunate byproduct of this competition.
I'm not saying one company should have a monopoly but what we have now is 3 companies owning the console gaming industry. At least when it's just one, they generally make the product functional because they know people will just stop using it if it's not but in this case they can simply point out that it's better than their competitor.
If this is such a competition, why are we not seeing the benefits that competition usually brings? The ps3 and 360 are both pretty much the same (you can point out tiny differences but it's nothing like the differences between playstation and N64) and it doesn't seem like their trying to improve their own product to compete. Occasionally one console makes a feature designed to mimic something that the other can do.
A console war does not equal competition. Having two different video formats wouldn't make things better, it makes things worse. That's why with things like movies we usually stick with one format and it works out fine. Other companies can make different versions and you can choose what one you like best.
If you buy a 360, it's going to have the same flaws as every other 360. No other company is allowed to make a system that plays 360 games, even if it works better. This isn't a real competition, it's the illusion of competition. We have 3 companies running a monopoly on console gaming and we have no choice but to accept it or quit playing.
At least when it's just one, they generally make the product functional because they know people will just stop using it if it's not but in this case they can simply point out that it's better than their competitor.
What? That makes no sense IMO. If there's only one, and it's not very good, not only do people not realise it's no good, because there's nothing to compare it to, but they won't just stop using it, because there is no alternative. Unless you mean they would stop gaming altogether, because then the gaming industry would completely die out. I cannot see any good side to a monopoly.

The wii is a socialist console.Free internet use? Ha yeah up until your waiting in line for bread like they do in the UK.
Have to buy all those accessories but guess what happens if one breaks? You have to stand in front of a refund panel and they decide if you are worthy of getting a new one.
This is how they started the nazi movement, don't take my word for it, go research it yourself.
I was reading a history book the other day and I'll be honest, it scared the living shit out of me. Why don't people see this stuff?! HAVE YOU ALL GONE CRAZY!
Looks like we have another liberal radical here. Go use your wii remote to wave in the new world order you sheep.
Haha, you get caught saying you think all consoles are equal, even wii's, and you get called a socialist/nazi!

Obviously. PS3 and 360 are genetically superior. That's not bigotry, it's science. The WII is a MONGREL CONSOLE and it uses socialism to survive. I don't care if I get reported, every Wii on the face of the earth should be hunted down and EXTERMINATED!
PS3 and 360 create great works of art, they flourished, but wii comes over here on boats and planes and what do they do? NOTHING! they make money selling game shaped drugs (shovelware) to our kids and take no responsibility for it. They make money, sure because of affirmative action. A store that sells PS3 and 360 games has to sell WII games even if their not that good. So what happens to the good xbox games like psychonauts? Oh they have to go so we can make room for the new "Americas top model" BS!
You can see the hypocrisy in this, can't you?
Well, I mean like...it's a gaming console man.
I bought it because it was cheap and I like nintendo.
I would happily buy a 360 and a PS3 if I could afford it, but all the games I want are on the PC or Wii so there's no point in buying anything else.
The Wii's graphics are obviously worse than the 360 and the PS3's. But I would have more fun playing, say, Metroid Prime 3 than I would have playing Gears of War 2.
