alos Iron and wine is weird, kinda liked it

Iron and Wine lyrics make absolutely no sense, but it's spoken hypnotically along with the music, and I like that a lot.

A friend in music class played an Irish/Celtic piano song once (very energetic, and seemingly told a story with the ups and downs), and I could never forget it if I tried.

I just haven't heard it played in years, but it's crystal clear in my memory.

I seriously LOVE melodic folk, more scandinavian than Irish but some Irish stuff is still awesome. The slow, sorrow, solo-artist kind of folk bores me to no ends.

Folk-Metal is where it's at. You guys go check out these bands and you can thank me later:

Another flavor would be stuff from the Celtic folk revival of the 60s and 70s, to whit: Steeleye Span, Andy Irvine/Paul Brady, and Silly Wizard. Look up things like 'Gaudete' by the first, 'Plains of Kildare' by the second, and 'Queen of Argyll' by the third.

I am a huge fan of folk metal and Viking metal, but there is also some acoustic folk music that I love.

If you're interested in Scandinavian folk rock, check out the band Fejd [http://www.fejd.se/], made up of musicians from several folk metal bands. They play largely acoustic, highly melodic and somewhat upbeat folk with some more aggressive underpinnings. Their first two demos are available for free download on their site, and come highly recommended.

Secondly, there is a neofolk band called Tenhi [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenhi] which I have come to love. Unfortunately there are no albums available where I live (and finding them online can be quite hard), so I have yet to have listened in any significant way, but it is beautiful, atmospheric, yet very dark music, with lots of acoustic guitars and pianos, though it does not forsake modern influences; in fact, much of the band's inspiration comes from the juxtaposition of nature and tradition versus modern technology and lifestyles. Very interesting and enjoyable if you really appreciate music beyond a surface level.

Listen, crouton, if you love Mumford and Sons, please tell me that you've checked out Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit [http://www.myspace.com/johnnyflynn]. Johnny is one handsome troubadour, and I think that you'd really like the band. I saw them (and Laura Marling) at this fantastic festival in London last weekend, in some big ole church.

I have indeed heard of Mr. Flynn. I was going to go and see him when he was playing Southampton, but I'm afraid there were complications. Needless to say, I'd go and see him again given the chance.

Also, anyone else going to The Green Man Festival?

Folk has just had this huge uprising amongst hip and trendy college kids and it irritates me. There's a reason it's called folk music. It's music of reigional culture and it's different all over the world, it's not just shaggy hair, scruffy beards and trying to keep your indie cred up, especially when the word "indie" has absolutely no stylistic meaning. Any music of any style can be independent. There's as much independent folk as there is independent metal and independent electronic.

Although it has been mentioned various times already, I have to say it once more: Flogging Molly kicks ass! One of very few bands I actually bought CDs from. I especially like Celtic folk with harps and everything but I enjoy German folk just as much. Band's like Faun and Schandmaul are just great and even though it's probably more rock/metal than it's folk, as my two favourite bands I have to insert Saltatio Mortis and InExtremo here.

I mostly like Scottish/Irish and American folk mostly. I love Early Bob Dylan(I love his other stuff too, but it's not really folk), Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Missisippi John Hurt etc.


I've been listening to a lot of Gogol Bordello recently. They're a multicultural folk punk band based in New York. Lots of Eastern European fol influences. Not really folk as such, but definitely derived from it.
