From my post in that recent thread about free games with ads:

The idiomatic expression 'for free' hurts to read. It could just be the years of brainwashing by my mother, but hearing or reading is not a mild annoyance.

Something is 'free' or it is 'for nothing'. Everything else is really annoying.
