Oh [http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll228/MagekingSoren/Cosplay/cosplay-misa-misa2.jpg] hell [http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ff7.jpg] fucking [http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Hv-1mLTN7lI/ShfQYe8KETI/AAAAAAAAJ1U/igfrb58uloQ/s400/ffxiii2.jpg] yes [http://larcho.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/link.jpg] they do.
So....Let's leave cosplay to Japan.
I've been to comicon a couple times, some anime festivals(lots of big ones here in Calgary) and honestly, most of the people are overweight and have hair where they really shouldn't.
If you're ugly, don't do stuff to draw attention to your looks.
Why people can't get this through their head, I don't know.
It's why I don't cosplay, I'd look horrible in most. I know it, accept it, and spare people alot of eye surgery.(see above pictures of fat people)

although i dont cosplay and personally im not to fond of it either (probably cause id do a bad job of it as well), although i dont hold any grudges to those who do. I disagree with the quoted post that ugly ppl shouldn't cosplay think everyone shouls have an equal opportunity to look ridiculous.

on a side note: holy sht ur from calgary too? awsome!

I just think it's weird to go to conventions in the costumes... Why not have costume parties for it? Like at someone's house or a club or bar or something. Conventions just don't seem convenient. Meh. Some of them are cool, like those Transformers ones that were shown (even though I don't like Transformers). But as is often the case with awesome things, it's pretty overrun by geeks (the bad kind). And geeks can be annoying.

While only discovering what cosplay is recently, I can't say I have a problem with it.

I actually think it's kinda sexy sometimes.

It's just when it's done bad...

It's fucking horrible...*shivers*
The one dressed like Mello looks A TON like a friend(or former friend...Not sure) of mine.

Go to conventions, find the hottest, coolest, whatever. Lesbian female Links. Darth Vader. Throw in a few others, guys who aren't even in costume, trans that will never make any pageant. I take these all and sell them. Seriously. I go to cons to run slave auctions. I don't hate cosplay, I love it. I OWN THEM ALL! Hell, we had Boba Fett as our door guard once. Nobody fucked with us that night that I know of.

Seriously, our best packages are always the 18-23 yr. old pair of girls who would never go up alone but get them together and they're hot, half-naked, in costume until they start removing pieces to up their price. And they said being a nerd could never be cool. Fuck them I win!

I LOVE cosplay, *if* it is done well. I have seen too many fat men dressed as the subject of their favorite "personal fantasy" to ever say the previous sentence without qualification. It can just be creepy.

Ex. I saw a couple women dressed well as Alice from American McGee's Alice, it was amazing. They were then followed by what I assumed was Sailor Moon after she *really* let herself go and got mauled by a bear covered in glue.

I fucking hate the way "every" Westerner wishes they where Japanese. It fucking annoys me how they all wish they were Japanese and do everything to make themselves more Japanese. It's fucking ridiculous, it's ok accepting the culture but your not fucking Japanese and dressing up as the shitty characters in your little shows or game won't change that.

Well you did ask so you can't go getting angry at my opinion can you?
I don't think it's *entirely* about being a Japanophile. Yes, I hate those people too, they are fairly creepy. But sometimes it's just to pay tribute to the character. A lot of people dress up as western things as well, like The Doctor or some western game characters.

Yeah, uh, I second the bold. Some cosplays[footnote]See: Gorgeous woman above[/footnote] look phenomenal when done right.
That better actually be a woman.

What isn't to love? When done right, it is awesome. When done wrong, it is funny as hell.

Why is it people think they are normal or 'right' when they criticise cosplay, despite the fact that as rational, intelligent individuals they should defend the rights of people to free speech and free social expression?

They aren't hurting people (like public slaughtering of an animal might) .. nor are they naked ... which from a rational perspective I don't see why being naked in public is such a taboo...

The people who criticise cosplay ... why? Surely life is cosplay ... I have to wear my suit, my tie, my slacks, my laptop as that's considered 'what I have to wear' ... then I get home and friends call me out for a drink, or I have uni, and I wear 'student' gear ...

Who the hell cares? If you do ... you're a petty individual and should not breed.

There is nothing right or wrong with cosplaying. It is on par with furry fandom, which I know I will get some hysteria over but hear me out. They are both means in which to express creativity, socialise, and have a good time. What people do in their spare time shouldn't matter to anyone not already involved so why do these groups get so much bile? Why is the line between normality and abnormality so opaque in recent years?

It all becomes so much easier to take when you stop worrying about differences and realise that human beings (along with everything they do) are fascinating. Regardless of whether you wish to partake in their interests or not.

And to those who complain about shoddy costumes, close your shallow eyes and shut your gob long enough to remember you can't have the good without the bad!

By right do mean you only like it if you think the girls are cute?
No he means that they look like the characters which is why for 2 of them there is the character they are dressed as in the same pose as them to compare.

I like cosplay, the good and the bad, although I've never gone to a convention (haven't had the chance yet), I think it's a passtime and people having fun. When it's good, it's awesome, when it's bad, it's laughable, either way I get a smile so no loss there.

Yeah, everyone should have an equal right to cosplay. And they do. My beef with that is just, I don't like looking at fat ugly people in little pink tank tops and knee high sock+short skirt.
It's just wrong.

side note: I find quite a few people on the E are from Calgary.

I know this may be odd after reading so many people say how awesome it is but i just don't get the appeal of it. Few people in Aus do it right anyway.

I've been to a few anime cons and the people there are so into it they got a bit verbal to the people who weren't dressed up. I guess that's just the minority though

Yeah, but I didn't ask, so I can go getting angry at your opinion.

For some, it's not a matter of accepting the culture. The western world was conceived in Greece and ruined in Rome. The Eastern world wasn't ruined until Mao showed up, bringing Eastern European atheism with him. Yes, I know Tokugawa Japan was imperialistic, racist, xenophobic, sexist, and still pretty violent despite the Shogunate ending the daimyo wars. Not much different than Rome but they had better philosophers, artists, concepts on how to live. I don't do Asian cosplay with the exception of the occasional eastern style sword but I do know a lot of hardcores out there and you're damn harsh to a phenomenon I don't think you understand. It's not "every" westerner, most of my family doesn't get Asia period. People are fluid and can change their cultural values. Such changes are often superficial and show up in art i.e. cosplay but it's a door to seeing the world differently. There's a reason why the western world is tanking financially while Asia is becoming frighteningly powerful. Frankly, if I can get China to give on Tibet, open up religiously, and have some state sponsored Taoist and Buddhist temples as a show of good faith I'm probably all for them taking over. With Japanese Buddhists as their watchdogs.
