I think Bioware is anticipating the great number of Jedi and Sith. According to the teaser trailer, it looked like the game will center on a Jedi vs Sith war.

I am going to be a Mandalorian ... assuming of course, they are present in the game
The Mandalorians are more neutral, aren't they? They didn't really seem to pick a side of either the Republic or the Sith, and if the game is mostly going to be focusing on the those two factions at war then I don't really see them being playable.

But I might be wrong, there are still four more classes to be announced (two per faction) according to their official site so who knows what the future may hold.

At this point in time, I'm going to be playing a Bounty Hunter. Wrist mounted flamers and wrist mounted rocket launchers=awesome.
dont forget jet packs, well as long as you dont have your back turned on a blind smuggler with a combat stick over a sarlaac

I for one am going to try to play as a non-force character. But I do desperately want to be a sith. Desperately. But then again I really wanted to be a rogue on WoW, but it proved too hard and I found paladins to be much more to be style and liking. I know that pwning a jedi as a bounty hunter will be pretty cool. We've all seen Jango Fett on SW: ep II.

Wouldn't that be like saying mages are bad in WOW? That everyone will want to be one. I think what they will end up doing is making a low level Sith or Jedi useless (like a low level D&D mage). Sure if one was to invest the time and mental energy to the character they eventually become Gods. Where the bounty hunter will start off more powerful but will hit the ceiling alot faster than the Jedi would.
I strongly disagree with this statement since I'm a veteran of playing D&D mages from 1-epic. Low levels take some working, yes, but they're hardly worthless. Jedi and sith also seem to have some strong differences, with the Sith being able to use more offensive force abilities and the Jedi being more apt to use buffs and healing abilities.
Sorry useless was the wrong word. The point is a fighter starts with 12 hp (with no Con bonus) where a wizard has 4hp. A fighter can use a variety of weapons where a wizard has 2. A staff for 1D6 and a dagger for 1D4. And lvl 1 spells even you gotta admit aren't all that great. Sure mage armor is a must but you are just eating up space needed for an offensive spell like Magic Missile.
Charm Person, Color Spray, Sleep, etc. - Or in my opinion you are doing it wrong. First 2 spell levels for a wizard, your best spells are your crowd controls. Taking out X* HD, depending on the version, with a sleep is far better then 1d4+1 damage. Grab Magic Missile later once it launches a few more and save damage dealing for the other classes until you start getting into the 3rd level nukes.

Back to The Old Republic though, well first Bioware is not presenting 4,5 and 6 movie era Star Wars. There are plenty of Jedi and plenty of Sith around during this time, so no reason to cap the population there. It also looks like they are keeping all the classes balanced, so a level 10 Jedi or Sith is just as strong as a level 10 Trooper or Bounty Hunter. Even in canon Force Powers were never God mode, for the most part. Just think of it in the terms that mostly you saw high level Jedi cutting down low level opponents, someone of a higher level is still going to be equal or give them a hard time.

Boba actually survived that the Sarlacc and went on through various other trials to become Mandalore.

Me too! Who cares if it's realistically impractical, I want two pistols!

Personally, I'm not into the whole lightsabre/jedi/sith/force nonsense. I've played plenty of games a jedi, and I suspect I'd at least try it in TOR but it won't be my first choice. personally, the idea of piloting a ship or shooting people with a quality blaster is far more intriguing than getting a sword of infinte sharpness.

See that would come down to player preference. I prefer a spell I know will work like magic missile vs a spell like charm where they could make a save. Or if you are looking at a horde of zombies. Neither way is really right or wrong unless it gets you and your party killed.

I didn't say anything about capping the population. I would just like to see more choice in it. I don't want to be stuck as a Jedi. I would like the option of going to the dark side if I feel I should. Or even better would be a neutral option. that is something I have never understood. Why can't there be a person who has the force but is neither Vader or Luke but more like the dude in Cloud City.

I think I'll try as both. Go as the Jedi/Sith first than a non-force user that tickles my fancy. But I'm more going in it for the PvE rather than PvP.

Actually, I don't think that'll be a huge problem. Out of all the friends I know who are planning on playing (which is quite a few) none want to start off as either a Jedi or Sith. We'll all get there eventually, as the story for each is different (and who would pass up another KOTOR-length "game"?) but I want to start as a Trooper and many of my friends want to either go smuggler, bounty hunter, or wait to see the other classes.

I think the world of Star Wars-fandom has grown beyond "OMG I USES THE FORCE ON YOUR ASS LOLZ". There have been sooooo many Star Wars games where that was available that nowadays people are asking for the other aspects.

Besides, a huge chunk of the players will be playing the game for story before gameplay. It's BioWare, after all.

I think there will be alot of force users at the start but after a few months people will want to try out other classes and things will be more balanced.

and you never know, one class may end up being really powerful and people will rush to become one of those gods instead of a force user

I guess I simply see it that a crowd control can and has saved my party several time over, where as the addition of a tiny amount of damage, while in some cases can be key, is less effective use of spell slots when better damage spells are soon to come. Agree to disagree I guess.

The TOR stuff I mention was not in reference to anything specific you said, just throwing my own thoughts on the table.

Ahh Ok that had me confused.

And don't get me wrong I do see the value of charm and sleep. I just always approached them looking at the failure rate over the value of the spell. Which is why I would pass on them for more direct spells.
