We've all done it at some point.

Picture the scene: someone comes up to you who you haven't seen in ages, they recognise you, you recognise them.

HOWEVER, they know your name, but you can't rmemeber theirs, how do you get them to say their name without letting them know that you completely forgot it ?

for me it's asking for their phone number then asking them to spell their name and palm it off like i have a million people with the same name in my phone.

how about you, fellow escapists?

Yes, I do it even with people I know very well. I do it about once a week.

EDIT: Oh err, generally I just go 'oh um... what's your name again, oh right, sorry'.

"I'm sorry, I remember you but I forgot your name."

I don't care, I just gotta be honest.

Oh thats easy , I try not to use a his/her name during the conversation then ask someone else. Although I very rarely forget girls names.

I...I don't...I'm just really awkward until someone else says their name and I hear it.

I do this all the time. Depending on how big an impression you made, it'll take between 24 hours and a month to forget your name.

It's not that I don't care, I just don't do names very well. Honest.

I rarely forget names or faces; whenever I do, it's a simple "Don't shoot me for this, but I totally forgot who you are...".

I would probably panic a little, then say hi and I can't remember your name and beg for their forgiveness.

If it's someone I haven't seen in ages, then it's generally at a social gathering so I'll call a friend I know is aquainted with the person and go, "You'll never guess who's here," and then I step aside saying, "Ta-da!" To reveal the person, and honest to goodness, it will generally cause the person you called over to exclaim the person's name in some form of greeting, i.e. "No way, Rachel, is that you?!"

I can't remember entire people all that well, much less names. When it comes to people, my memory sucks.

I say "Sorry for asking this, but my memory sucks and I forgot your name..."

I'll either omit any phrase which would require me to say their name directly, or use substitutes (dude, buddy, homey, man, officer, etc..) Alternatively, I'll just say "what did you say your name was?"

i don't remember names. seriously, i have known some people for well over a month and still don't remember them. even if i do know them, i almost never mention them in conversations, since they are not often necessary.

I hate it when this happens. But normally I'm just honest and say 'Sorry but I've forgotten your name.' I think its worse though when someone recognises you but you don't recognise them and you're trying to act polite but really thinking 'Who the hell are you and how do you know me?'

That happens to me all the time but I get around it. I don't think anybody's actually noticed that I can't remember their name actually. I guess I'm better at leading conversation than I am at having the courtesy to remember who somebody is.

I stick with "man" or "dude" for the guys and "hun" or "doll" to the girls, where inappropriate I tend to nod or handshake.

Though a worse situation is when you are introducing two people to each other and you either forget on or even worse both people's names. I did this once with a (very) new girlfriend and my best friends mom...ugh...I wanted a very deep hole...I would happily have gone to Hades with Kratos it get out of that.
