Fort Wayne Scratches Harry Baals Government Center

The results of an online contest to name a new government building in Fort Wayne, Indiana, have been scratched after voters overwhelmingly chose to call it the Harry Baals Government Center.

When city officials in Fort Wayne decided to build a new downtown "administrative, neighborhood and development hub," they figured there'd be no better, easier way to raise awareness of the new location among the citizenry and get them feeling involved in the process than by having them name it [http://www.feedbackfortwayne.org/forums/96987-name-our-building]. And the people responded, embracing their civic responsibility with great enthusiasm as they voted overwhelmingly to name the new building the Harry Baals Government Center.

Harry Baals was a local politician of considerable repute, serving as mayor of Fort Wayne from 1934 to 1947 and then from 1951 until his death in 1954. He was responsible for opening construction on the city's underground sewage system and the sewage treatment plant that remains in use today, and took an active role in material drives and infrastructure projects during the Second World War. His wife, Minnie Baals, died in 1936.

Yet despite that pedigree and the huge amount of love people have for Baals, city officials said they won't name the building after him for fear that it will be subject to ridicule. He may still be honored in some way in the future, however; current Mayor Jimmy Kimmel [http://thewaynedalenews.com/author-biographies/mayor-tom-henry.html] that the city is looking into the possibility of naming something else after Mayor Baals.

And what about just going with the second-place winner? Although it drew more than 2200 votes, it's out too; apparently the city council isn't interested in conducted business in Thunder Dome.

Whats the point of giving people the option to choose the name if you arent going to stick with it?

First you deny Harry Baals a building named after him and then you reject Thunder Dome?! Time to go with the backup plan and just go with "Administrative Government Building #24" I guess.

I think it is a shame they wont use the Mayor's name. I think it is closer to an evil gods name than balls, but thats just me.

Other than that Top 10 of my morning stories.

Oh, c'mon, Master Blaster ran Barter Town. You could build a statue to him/them in the new Thunder Dome Building. Any idea how may tourists that might draw in? And I bet al those tourist dollars could hav been good for the local economy, too.

Sure, always thinking with the public in mind...

Precisely, it's like what happened when NASA had people vote on the name of module they were adding onto the ISS. Voters overwhelmingly decided that they wanted to name it after Stephen Colbert but NASA in the end said "you know what, we'll just name it w/e we feel like".

It's stupid really, if you're going to open up voting to the public for naming something you have to be prepared to use what they choose regardless of what it is. Backing out at the end makes whoever is running the vote looks like a fool and condescending. It's as if they're saying "Yeah you guys are idiots so we're gonna choose something we like instead."

Considering how lazy government employees are, allowing them to work in a place called the Thunder Dome would probably increase productivity. (I worked for Social Security, so I know.)

What a bunch of party poopers.

1) Open voting to the public
2) Receive overwhelming votes for a single name
3) Ignore votes.

How very democratic.

Lol, indeed. VOTING IS A SCAM! They just want you to THINK you have control over what the government does!

Also, Harry Baals? What an epic name.

I would love to be a receptionist at a government building, have someone come inn, lean across the counter, lock eyes with them and say: "Welcome to the Thunder Dome, *****."

I mean COME ON, call it Thunder Dome for like a day at least.
