MW2 controls are smooth graphics are nice not all dark and gritty, lvling up is fun and rewarding and it also rewards players who play more, allowing you to get a better challenge against veteran players.
I agree with this guy. I mean while its not my favourite I think its pretty awesome.

I'm probably going to have to go for the obvious Bioshock Series. I don't get why people apply any amount of hate to Bioshock 2 since to me its also pretty damn awesome. The story in both....hell I love it. The atmosphere is always good and the characters are also pretty sweet (some in the second have a bit iffy voice acting but really its all stellar. The controls are fluid, nice looking graphics, cool enemies and pretty awesome weapons make this a fully solid package. And I love the online in Bioshock 2 as well. Finally both have awesome set pieces such as

Killing Andrew Ryan in Bioshock The Original and The Little Sister thing in Bioshock 2 The Sequel
. And each introduce bad-ass enemies such as the first has the Big Daddy while the second has the Big Sister.

And if it becomes a series (well...fine this ain't a shooter but still) Mirror's Edge. I had a hell of a time with it, especially since I got rid of all of the HUD (including the center dot thing). I felt a thrill running around, found the controls fluid and had a great time with the combat. I loved the idea of free-running in the first person. The story was a little bit iffy (mainly due to the pretty poor cut-scenes) but I liked the idea of the government using their own Runners as agents of destruction. Plus the whole plot about Faith's sister getting framed was a good one. If it becomes a series I only have a few recommendations: More outdoor running, more of them chase scenes (those were AWESOME!) and improve the cutscenes so that instead of those animated drawn things they're similar to Half-Life's (continues from your perspective with the same game engine).

Can't beat Half Life series in my opinion. The world is unique and has developed over time. It is full of definitive characters that aren't just 'Big Strong Good Guy' and 'Evil Tyrannical Bad Ass'.

The original game was, and still is, ground breaking in terms of scope, pacing and action set pieces. Basic squad mechanics made an appearance, I always felt pretty bad when a Barney got killed.

The evolution from survival/escape to full out war to sci-fi mentalism is, I think, unparalleled in terms of single player games (even by Half Life 2).

Then came along Opposing Forces which was an amazing shift in perspectives that ramped up the action but felt defined against the original. Blue Shift was a bit, meh, but only by comparison.

Half Life 2 and its following Episodes, to my mind, still trounce every single modern FPS story in terms of atmosphere, action set pieces and emotion. The ending of Episode 2 was a blow I took time to recover from!

Sections such as Ravenholm, the Highway sections, the last desperate fight in Ep 2, the super-grav gun and everything else defies the contemporary FPSs trend to demonstrate variety as different warzones - bring back the sole survivor game, its worth it.

Not to mention the contributions to gaming Half Life has brought directly through its engines. Counter Strike-CSS, Team Fortress 1 & 2, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Portal, Gary's Mod, and all the host of mods that have come from them.

Everything else pales in terms of characters, settings and impact. I love CoD4 and MW2 and some of the surroundings.

I haven't played killzone 2, but I did play the first killzone. I didn't play the campaign, just split screen multiplayer, and some fun times were had.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the modes, in particular the defence mode in which ISA had to defend two generators while Helghast try to destroy them. Holding the line against 4 helghast bots with a mate was very entertaining. The weapons were great, and the grenades were top notch.

And of course the half life series for singleplayer.

Battlefield: Bad Company. It had a strange and deviant story that made up for the easy gameplay. Also, the online mode was great. You could do what you want instead of having to go find the weapons on the map somewhere. And the destructibles made the gameplay better when it came to campers.

Halo 3. It had a nice colorful environment instead of a depressing brown-scape. Also, you could move easily and gameplay was more centered around getting out of the line of fire rather than staying out of it completely and having to camp.

Team Fortress 2. It had achievements, good and varied types of gameplay, and a good atmosphere. There's a reason it's popular.

CALL OF DUTY 3:

First off, I'd like to say that I have far more recent games like MW2, Halo 3, L4D2, TF2, etc.

This game was the first game developed by Treyarch in the Call of Duty series and it has been dismissed after Call of Duty 2 (which I didn't have). Now I have CoD 3 on the PS2 and have recently picked it up again after setting up my PS2 in my room. For the PS2, CoD2 is FUN. Why is it so much fun? Because it does shooting RIGHT. It doesn't screw up. The default formulae for an FPS is added in without any gimmicks. It then uses that, and puts you into Epic, fun and creative environments for each level and gives you a variation of weapons, all useful, but not overpowerful for different situations.

Team Fortress 2 because of the amount of effort Valve puts into the game. The community is also really awesome and I usually add like 3 people to my friend's list every-time I play

Alright, first of all, I want this to be a topic proper discussion, so flamers, trolls and fanboys, check your prejudices at the door.

With the recent hub-ub regarding MW2, and what seems to be the overall declining quality of both shooters and their fanbases, I mean to ask you what is your favourite FPS series (or game) and why.

I'll get the ball rolling with the Killzone series. To me, it is my favourite FPS series based on a number of factors:

- It has a very strong cast of villains, with a very impressive voice cast to back it up. The Helghast are visually impressive and intimidating, and as you delve into the universe, their history is fascinating, to the point where you wonder if the ISA are really the good guys in the story after all.

- The visuals of the latest installment are amazing. Many complained that the game felt too drab and grey, and while I do agree that seems to be more the norm than the exception these days, I'll argue that if there's a world suited for such visuals, it is indeed Helghan.

- Likewise, much has been said of the weapon handling. I take a very strong objection to such criticism, and believe it stems from the fact that we have been "spoiled" by most shooters. Having handled firearms, Killzone 2 is the only, I say again, the only game I have ever played that properly transmits what a cumbersome and "heavy" experience it really is to handle such weapons. It felt realistic, whereas in most shooters, the weapona handle as if they are made of balsa wood, and it never feels "just right".

And that's it.

Your choice?
Resistance 2. Simply amazing story for the single player campaign. Challenging, yet rewarding boss fights. Fucking phenomenal graphics, imaginative weapons, the explosive revolver is easily the coolest weapon ever.
The most unexpected ending that wasn't "happily ever after".
And the online multiplayer. Co-op campaign's just great fun, good community, everyone works together fairly well.
Easily my favourite FPS since Half-Life 2.

I like the Battlefield: Bad Company series. They acknowledge the ridiculousness of most FPS stories, and try to make light of it, rather than just being serious. Yes, it's fighting Russians over a superweapon, but the fun of the multiplayer more than makes up for the fairly generic storyline. And you can collapse buildings.
