Best intro FPS ever, really.

Plus, it is only 4 or 5 dollars. Doubly plus, it is a good game with an interesting idea. Triply plus, there is a sequel that has basically nothing to do with the first game, so you know it is good!

Really. It was my first FPS that I beat, and now I beat CoD on Vet and solo'd Reach on Legendary.

If I can do this, so can you!

I used to have trouble with Halo 1 on Easy, too. So, I suuuuuuuucked.

If you die really fast in half-life, most likely you made a fatal mistake.
If you die really fast in COD, you're just playing the game.

I would recommend Bioshock, but that's not very easy.
Fallout isn't much of an FPS, but it's still a good time.
and I suppose Mass Effect is a third person shooter/RPG

My advice is just play on lower difficulties, and the more you play the better you'll get.

I am the same way. So if you are looking for a good FPS, check out Prey. Cause, you know, you can totally trust two random dudes you have never met in your life.

If you can't trust the internet, who can you trust?

If you want to go old school, you could play DOOM or one of the Quake games for PC. I grew up playing those and while neither is super easy, you should be able to play them without too much trouble. I also recommend the Bioshock games. They're much more recent and aren't too bad. Just make sure you keep good stocks of ammo and stick to two or three guns that you'll eventually fully upgrade.

Homefront. The whole thing is a goddamn tutorial. Go over there. Now go over there. Jump over that. Shoot them. Throw a grenade now. Pick up that gun....

ETC...............................

So, I've never really been into FPS. I don't really see the appeal. I've had some fun with Unreal Tournament (don't know which one) and I can see that Half Life is probably quite good, but I die really quickly and give up. My brother's COD mad so I've had a go on various CODs, and died really quickly and gave up. In short, I'm just not very good at it.

But I'm looking to broaden my gaming horizons so...can anyone recommend a FPS for beginners? Something where I'm not going to panic and die in the first five minutes, preferably.

Also, I think some of my badness stems from the first person aspect...I'm not bad at Battlefront when I play from a third person perspective. So can anyone recommend a "third person shooter" if there is such a thing?

Ta Escapists :)
Mass effect 2 is a bit third-person-FPS'ish, then theres Dead Space and Borderlands, the former is okay if you play it in 3rd-person. Bioshock is also a great game if you like atmosphere, if you're gonna play COD then i suggest you just start at the casual setting (i know i did) and then move onto multi-player. Now mind you: you will die, at first, but eventually you'll learn the maps and figure out what weps you like.

For multiplayer the only thing you can really do is practice, practice, practice. Pick up something slightly less crazy than COD, like Team Fortress or Left 4 Dead or Monday Night Combat, and just play the shit out of it until you get good. There is no secret. You must understand that You. Are Going. To Die. As in, A LOT. You will not even know why half the time. Watch the other players. Do what they do -- or try to. Eventually you'll catch on.
Bolded for truth. The key to any online FPS is mastery through constant repetition. Before you gain said mastery (or at least proficiency) you will be killed a lot. That's fine, that's how you learn. Games that have a kill cam are especially helpful, as literally watching through an enemy's eyes as they kill you can be very edifying.
