I have mixed opinions about the whole thing, but feel that it is ultimatly a fairly balanced system even with the criticism. The alternative of putting everything in the direct hands of the goverment would be worse. As far as the Federal Reserve making a "profit" I believe the idea is that the profit it makes is put away for the next time it needs to come into play.
I have not followed it closely enough to say whether it's good or bad, but on paper at least the idea makes a certain amount of sense, and is in keeping with our system of checks and balances. Also, like many systems, it largely comes down to a question of "how else do you do it?" any alternative system is likely to have equal drawbacks, and a lot of other workable ideas would not fit in with our ideals of capitolism.
As far as some of the unusual desicians being made, well we live in an unusual time of economic crisis. If there were simple, perfect desicians to be made to fix the current problems there would be no crisis. Only time will tell whether the right things are being done. Looking back on things hindsight is always 20/20. We don't have the benefit of looking back on this from the future, only the abillity to make guesses right now, and for every desician on this level there are going to be tons of people being critical with differant ideas, and chance are if any plan fails someone being critical of it would have been right just by the numbers, but that doesn't mean that the best seeming solution was not employed when the desicians were first being made.
