The first time I had internet access I merely starred at google, and did not have a clue what to type(and no it was 3 oclock in the afternoon and porn was out of the question.) Anyway, one of the first things I ever looked up was freeware games, After a few crappy mmorpgs(one was good though, contained vampires and vampire hunters and you could choose between each side, can't remember the name though) Then I found enemy territory, the first game I ever really got into on a multiplayer level.

Anyway, What I'm trying to ask is, what was your favourite freeware game?
It's not specificity freeware. But I have a bi-weekly Vodcast that reviews all free open source video games.
If you don't know what open source is it means the games are free to download but you are also free to modify and use them in anyway you see fit.
The podcast can be found at www.kzap.co.uk
Some games I recommend Nexuiz, Supertux and SupertuxKart.
Also some open sources games are REALLY good but some our pretty bad that's why I started this podcast.
We are reviewing Enemy Territory next episode BTW

I loved ET. Wonderful game. Probably one of my first multiplayer fps games (that and Soldier of Fortune 2). Must have sunk hundreds of hours into it.

I'm also a fan of any of the Anonymous Game Developer games http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html. They're not original, but they're good older games redone. I also play an occasional interactive fiction games. There's a nice community of devs that keeps good ones coming in.

There's a few other threads on this along the way - not complaining, just that we get a different set of suggestions each time this pops up so checking them out will give you even more suggestions.

My favorite recent one is iji

Beneath a Steel Sky; they released it as freeware a little while back.
Most certainly this. Absolute classic. I also enjoy Soldat and a free flash game called The Last Stand 2 (http://armorgames.com/play/1443/the-last-stand-2) Zombie shooting goodness.

You could also try a whole mess of open source games,
They don't have the detail as commercial games now, but they are realy cool and have a good user base and modding communities.

http://wiki.freegamedev.net/index.php/Complete%2C_non-casual_open_source_games

There are a few that are realy good, and if you can add something to it, all the source code and files are available to you, under a GPL

You may have to be careful with your acronyms there; that can be a little too easily quoted out of context.

The hardest game in the world. [http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/]
No, everyone knows that this [http://www.mazapan.se/games/BurnTheRope.php] is the hardest game in the world.

Also, Yahtzee's games on his website [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm] are pretty good.

Try Sauerbraten, Cube (and the AssaultCube mod) These are awesome freeware fps's that even run on my crappy old computer, and unlike most other freeware fps's have a decent singleplayer mode as well as an awesome multiplayer.

For me it's gotta be Sonny and Sonny 2 (armorgames.com def. has both). They're only flash RPGs, but they're actually surprisingly high quality, with great graphics, combat, and an effective linear level design. I recommend!

Dwarf Fortress. [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/]

Very difficult but awesome. I suggest playing older versions because they have weird bugs that make the game more fun.(master axedwarve ignoring he's on fire, killing everything he sees is one of the most awesome ways to lose your fortress)

The game's unofficial motto is: Losing is fun

Facade, one of the most ... interesting games I've ever played.
It's an erm, interactive story game and there's a lot of uncomfortable moments. Also, I think the game the OP is/was referring to is Bloodlust. It's a great concept but I really could not stand the game.

I found these years ago, but they can still be fun when I need something to do. Not exactly sure if they are freeware or shareware, but they are free to play.

Risk Your Life 2 [http://www.ryl2.com.my/]
- My personal replacement for WOW (I will never touch WOW... or even look at it seductively).

Pocket Tanks, Super DX Ball, and Neon Wars [http://www.blitwise.com/products.html]
- Pocket Tanks is a 1v1 strategy game in which each player battles to get the most points. (This game is very similar to Worms on the 360 Arcade)
- Super DX Ball is an innovative brick-breaking game.

Currently, mine would be Spectrum Spelunker.

http://www.eegra.com/pages/show/title/29_07_2008_First_Annual_Game_Makin__Shindig_WINNERS_ANNOUNCED_HOORAY/page/9

It was created as an entry to a contest on Eegra, a pretty awesome site, and won second place. I don't care much for the first place entry... I couldn't understand it. This one, however, was incredibly fun to play.
