Anyone suffer from them? I have a couple reoccurring nightmares, one which involves me being shot and killed in a gang incident. Another one has me shoved off of a skyscraper by a random loved one. My personal favorite has to be the one where I commit hari kari and die slowly lying in a pool of my own blood.

My dreams aren't always so violent and graphic but these keep coming back again and again sometimes I really dread sleeping.

Anyway, that's the thread.

my bad dreams are odd, i never die in them. its always someone else; people i know, large amounts of people i dont know, stuck in zombie apocalypse, or monsters.

sometimes im defending others from getting killed, sometimes im doing the killing, and sometimes i just end the world. recently i dreamt that monsters were taking over the Earth, systematically converting all humans into whatever monsters they were. and the odd things was...I was going to be their leader. i didnt ask for it or anything, I was cornered and thinking im gonna die when all of a sudden they revealed that they wanted me to rule once the planet was converted.

i cant remember a dream in which i have died. and whenever im falling in a dream, i either wake up well before i hit the ground or miss the ground and figure out how to fly.

I have the recurring character of a scary black-haired girl trying to kill me (Yeah, like the one from The Ring and The Grudge). Luckily it doesn't happen that often anymore.

I think you need to try and find out what might be causing these dreams first. That or try and find a way to get your brain concentrating on other things before you sleep, 'cause dreading having the bad dreams just makes you think about them more.

For instance, I think about zombies a lot, so I often have dreams with zombies in. I don't mind it though, 'cause I like having adventurous dreams. :D

Good luck anyway, I hope your dreams get better soon!

for many years a recurring theme has been my teeth falling out of my head. All the other aspects may change but the one constant is loss of teeth.

I barely have dreams either, but whenever I do, it's never a good dream. In my dreams, me and other people are usually under attack, being chased, or simply don't make sense. A few of the bad guys were the Wicked Witch of the West, Scooby-doo monsters, Heath Ledger's Joker, Martians, etc. A recurring one I had for a bit involved this giant-Cloverfield-like-monster situation. I could never see the damn thing, but I'd be running from it with some other people and then suddenly it would stop the ground extra hard and everything would fall out from below me.

Funny thing, I did have a pretty good dream the other night. I actually realized it was a dream too, but woke up after that. It's a bit bitter sweet though, because the reason I realized I was dreaming was because I was in a meaningful relationship with a member of the opposite sex.

The reason I, for the first time ever, realized I was in a dream was because I had a girlfriend.

...that kinda sucks.

There are 2 that I get alot.
1 Is my teeth fall out and I choke to death on them.
2 Is some variation of endlessly running away from something, Usually either Wasps/Bees or Zombies.. however the Wasps/Bees 50% of the time will actually catch up to me and I'll die an agonising death... But the zombies almost never catch up to me.

Thats because you actually can't die in a dream, because if you do you would actually die "irl". You can dream of dying, like how the op dreamt of hara kiri, or falling to the ground or something, but the moment your heart would stop in the dream, it would really stop. I read this years ago, and can't remember where, sorry if someone is interested.

/Edit: Funny thing about the dreams where u fall to the ground: It's actually pretty hard to die from that instantly, you have to fall on your head or something, otherwise, without help, you die slowly from your bleeding organs, but somehow our mind thinks that you die when you hit the ground...

Funny thing is, the more you dread sleep, the more chance you have of having a bad dream. And also, because you dread sleeping, you probably are more tired then you usually would be before you sleep, increasing your chances of you actually remembering a dream.

That said, I had recurring nightmares as well. Maybe not every day, but surely at least 2-3 times a week. And it was the same dream over and over (or certain situations would occur often). The main thing is storms. I mean, BIG storms, with like 20 tornado's all doing their thing. Eventually a tornado decides to hit the building and I die (or just get flung around a lot).

Next to that, I had this dream in which I had the ability to fly, but only terribly slowly, like slower than crawling. What I tried to do when I was awake, was imagine me flying really fast and creating the laws of physics my dreams work by. Eventually, I learnt to fly fast in those dreams. After that, I could just fly away from the storms in other recurring dreams. It feels really cool and I just don't take the hazards in nightmares serious any more.

I've heard this before, but would really dispute it, as it doesn't really make logical sense (all your other muscles don't react to what happens in your dreams, so why should your heart?) and that it is pretty much impossible to prove, how do you know someone who died in their sleep died because they died in their dream? You can't. It's an old wives tale, no scientific evidence at all.

Secondly I had recurring dreams where I was knifed by the guy from Scream (Of all the movies it could have been, it's the hooded guy from Scream. How utterly pathetic) And I died all the time Not just "He attacks, I wake up" either, but full on he stabs me, I stumble around, go numb, can't breathe etc. slowly fade to black. It happened so often I started to realise that I was dreaming when he turned up, and would combat it by trying to wake up (by either forcing my eyes open: Very hard to do in a dream, but strangely managable if I concentrated) or curling up in a ball and closing and covering my eyes - protip for lucid dreamers: nothing can hurt you if you can't see it in a dream! Of course, I can't verify any of this either, but nightmares really suck, especially since you always seem to be more likely to have another one after the first (but can never get back to that awesome dream you were having before you woke up pre-maturely. Grrr)

It may take a while, but you should grow out of them eventually, although I still have a few.

No, there is no real prove to that, and it's impossible do to, that's true, but I remember that there were hints to that. And your other muscles actually do react to what you are doing in your sleep, that's at least true for some people, like the ones who talk in their sleep.^^ But I guess that this will be a unsolved "mystery" forever.

To actually contribute to the topic: I rarely remember what I dreamt of, even if I seemed to have a nightmare (if someone was sleeping next to me they could tell when I had one, or when I wake up covered in sweat and my heart racing (which I love, especially when I just showered before going to sleep or put on new sheets... <.<)). I used to remember my dreams, and I had a lot of them when I was a teenager, especially of somehow losing my best friend, and sometimes getting myself killed too. That curling to a ball, because you can't get hurt by things you can't see in a dream seems interesting, and would kinda make sense...I should tell that said best friend, because she is starting to have those types of nightmares lately...

I have a few. The big three are being attacked by my father, being stuck back in the loony bin, and being stuck back with the family I once lived with.

I'm having sex with someone and someone else walks in and criticizes me.

I usually wake up with morning wood, but not when I have a dream when I'm boning someone and getting criticized.

let me rephrase it. i have never actually dreamt of myself dieing. sure, falling. but then again the fall itself isn't really dieing, and more often i learn how to fly.

the op said they get pushed off ledges by loved ones or even stabbing them-self. but i cant recall a dream in which i have ever been mortally wounded or betrayed by loved ones.

Last night I dreamt I was in a Friday the 13th movie. I had a bow and arrow and somehow managed to provoke Jason into chasing me with a car. Somehow I'd dug a hole in the dirt road, so he drove the car into it, I then shot him with the bow and ran away to a high way where I hitched a ride on a bus, but then the bus drove back to the campground and he started killing everyone again, so I stole a motorcyle and drove away along the same dirt road, but the gate was locked this time so I had to ditch it, then all the cars and other motorcycles along the road where I'd hitched the ride from the bus were all abandoned indicated that Jason had killed literally hundreds of people within the same mile stretch of road.

And that's about the time my cat woke me up by jumping on me.

you can teach yourself. my friend was in a psych class once and they were studying dreams. he gave me a handout from class that had instructions on how to have lucid dreams. learning how to remember them was the first step.

found this site with steps, maybe they can help you.

If I was a studier of dreams, I would say that you (subconsciously) think you are being betrayed.

I keep having a little freaky one, but it relates to flyboys... so I shall put it in a spoiler

In fly boys there is a part when one of the main characters kills himself when being shot down because he doesn't want to burn. I wasn't phased at all by it, I am one of those people who watches Band of Brothers and The Pacific at least once every 3 months. You know gore if you have watched the Pacific. This wasn't anything to me, but in the dreams I had after I am driving a tank in WW2 when I get out to look around of a 4 way intersection. As I am stepping down off of the tank it gets blown up, and arch way behind the tank gets blown up and Panzers come from the remaining 3 roads and before they can light me up I always take out a pistol and pop my self in the head. Don't ever know why sadly and I seem to not have any control over it.I at least have it once every 2 weeks.

I have reoccurring bad dreams. Frequently I'm back in high school failing all my courses. Then there's the one with the staircases without railings where I *must* keep moving upwards and the stairs get narrower and narrower to the wall and I end up falling...

The worst reoccurring one is seeing my family killed. Doesn't happen that often anymore but for a bit I would regularly wake up in a sweat.

Here's my dream chat group if you're interested in talking about dreams. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Dreamer-Society]

I don't really remember my dreams anymore, but when I was a kid a had a couple recurring nightmares. The most memorable one was me being trapped in a room that looked a lot like my elementary school cafeteria. There were no doors, I was all alone, but I was watching me freak out like I was looking through a rounded mirror in the upper corner of the room and not through my own eyes. I don't know why it terrified me, but it did.
