From Dust Always-On DRM Rumors Denied - UPDATED

Despite earlier rumors, Eric Chahi's new god-game From Dust [http://www.fromdustgame.com] will not make use of Ubisoft's "always on" DRM.

From Dust is the new Another World [http://www.amazon.com/Populous-I-PC/dp/B0012NXJIE/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1311871660&sr=8-17] creator Eric Chahi and if that sentence doesn't get you excited, there's really nothing I can do for you. But if it does, and you're planning on playing it on the PC, there is something I can do for you: I can annoy you with some bad news.

The sharp-eyed folks at Green Man Gaming [http://www.dsogaming.com/news/from-dust-will-also-require-a-permanent-internet-connection/] also has a notice stating that From Dust requires "high speed internet access and creation of a Ubisoft account," even though the game has no multiplayer component.

Ubisoft has yet to confirm or deny the reports but given yesterday's news that permanent connection [http://www.amazon.com/Driver-San-Francisco-Pc/dp/B002I0HFBC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1311783543&sr=8-3], it certainly seems likely. And also unfortunate; Ubisoft's past troubles with its always-on DRM are well documented and while things may be better now - which is to say, you might not get kicked out of your game quite as much - I'm not going to hold my breath.

UPDATE: Ubisoft didn't have much to say about the situation but what it did say was unequivocal: "It does not," a Ubisoft rep stated when asked about the presence of the DRM. That's good news - although on the downside, the game is still delayed. From Dust hits the PC on August 17.

Ah, DRMs. The polio of gaming. Hopefully a cure will one day come, less our gaming be so crippled by this disease!

If that's true, then I won't be buying the game. It could be the best thing in the history of best things, and I still wouldn't get it. Mandatory Steam registration is about as far as I'm willing to go with DRM, and even that's pushing it.

And once again Ubisoft insists on punishing their legitimate player base and reward the pirates with a nice challenge. The pirates won't have to worry about always on DRM once they crack this is in a week, probably less.

Perhaps "Permanent" is being confused for "Constant"?

The Escapist staff should be challenging them on this every single time they get the opportunity, as should every other publication.

Well Ill put it like this. Its up to you Ubisoft. You can either sell me 5 copies of the game or not. If you choose to put this in I will not buy it until the feature is eventually removed. If you choose not to add this you can cheerfully have my money.

Simple as that.

This makes me sad. I wanted to play this game and now I never will. Such a waste.

In response to update: Ok, we're good then.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

I was so looking forward to this game; but if it has always-online, then I'm out. After the mess that was AC2, I'm never using a Ubisoft game with always-connected drm.

EDIT: oh thank god, I was worried about not getting to play this.

This. My internet goes down if a bird pees on the wire, requiring a constant connection sounds like a nightmare.

Well, all my interest in this game is now gone.

And it's back... Ok, Ubisoft, clear this up. What's going on dammit?

So despite this doing nothing to prevent piracy, if anything it probably encourages it, and alienating potential customers they still do it. I just don't get it.

Shame really because the game sounds really interesting and looks great.

Well shit, I was looking forward to giving them money for this. Guess I need a new plan, I wonder if I can get the same game for free without DRM, where would such a wonderful thing exist.

Ubisoft fails again. (Not a shocker) Apparently they like losing most of their PC sales. Why do they even bother?

I for one will not be buying any Ubisoft products until they change their ludicrously anti-consumer stance on DRM. This system is insane and they should not get away with setting such an unfair and dangerous precedent.

Does it really matter? Can't play the game while traveling (not easy anyway), or during a power outage. Considering it's a single player game it would be one of the ones I'd be looking for to pass the time.

Maybe since it's not cod:x people might stick to their guns and not buy it. I can only hope.

This is why pirate versions are superior! :(
If you want to support the game, but not the DRM, buy the game and get the cracked version.
Voila!
Of course the downside of this of course is that it appears to the game company that you don't mind the ridiculous DRM restriction.

That's cool Ubisoft. I'll just wait for a decent crack to come out, you'll just get my money a bit later.
