As for me? There aren't too many things I don't like. Some people rave about gin, but I think it tastes like Pine-Sol (for anyone who doesn't know it's a cleaning liquid, and I haven't actually tasted it).
Maybe cleaning liquid is a bit overdone, I'd go for gasoline though. Pretty sure my car would run on gin too :p

Also, people need to start reading the first post and realising that the jerky didn't come in a can, that's just what he's comparing it to.

I've had beef jerky before (i'm Australian btw), i didn't hate it, but i didn't think it was anything to rant and rave about, i'd eat it if it was there or given to me, but i wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

As for root beer, i've never seen it here, so I can't comment on it.

I found some beef jerky in a butchers shop in my town, and it was mediocre at best. Try and find any place that sells south african food and look for 'biltong'; it's meat that has been cured, spiced and dried until it's really tough and chewy. Makes a great thing to gnaw on over the course of a couple of days.

As for root beer, isn't root beer just an americanisation of 'ginger beer'? I fucking love ginger beer.

I gotta agree with the OP on this one, Beef Jerky is pretty horrible stuff.
Root beer also tastes pretty bad imo.

This is what Beef Jerky should sthrive to be, in my opinion:
Dried and salted thigh of lamb
It's delicious!

Huh... I've not tried Beef Jerky myself, but other things in this thread I have:

Root Beer - The brand I get at least is nice. A few people I know can't stand it though, only a few select people in my family actually like it around where I've lived.

Ginger Ale - I like, I cannot describe why though, the taste seems a bit wierd. Though it works best when mixed with a Fruit Cocktail, then it's so delicious...

Ginger Beer - You might think that this is the same as the American "Ginger Ale" but no, it tastes very strongly of ginger, so much that it makes me feel ill... Though I still like Ginger Biscuits which have a similar taste...

Irn Bru - Is rather nice, though becomes one of the worst things ever when it goes flat...

Dr Pepper - Tastes like Marzipan, everyone I know absolutely loves it... Me and a friend often mix Amerreto and Coca-Cola to make an alchoholic drink that tastes the same and Dr Pepper.

On Topic:

Something overhyped that I didn't like? Mountain Dew.

Seriously I hear Americans talking about how they drink like 5 bottles of it per hour because it is so damn tasty and refreshing.

My experience? It's filled to the brim with sugar but yet somehow doesn't taste sweet, this causes me to have a sugar rush without any of the nice taste granted by the sugar which is an awful combination.

The only time I actually felt good after drinking a bottle of Mountain Dew was the time when I mixed an entire bottle of it with 2 cans of Red Bull and 4 Lucozade Energy Shots. But I'd still rather drink pretty much anything else than Mountain Dew *Ugh*

go to colorada, montainya, or wyomying and look around for some genuine buffalo jerky.

holy fuckin shit, that ruined all the store bought, jack links, pemmican, and oberto crap all this manufactured processed crap.

or go to hollister california and look for this dude who makes his own jerky, its a good substitute for the genuine deal.

I only like my grandfather's homemade beef jerky. Never really liked the store bought stuff. It just isn't nearly as great tasting and seemingly addicting.

This may actually be true. As of late I've been finding some import chocolate from god-knows-where. All I know is that it is delicious and marked in some kind of elf language.

Beef jerky is awesome. Salmon jerky on the other hand... Never again.

A shitty thing that was hyped up for me was the movie "Superbad." Everyone in my highschool, including the teachers, were raving about how amazingly funny that movie was. I didn't laugh once, and was disgusted at a few points. The movie "Borat" was exactly the same. After those two, I ignored everyone when they told me to watch the "Jackass" movies.

I think it all depends on what kind you get. Peppered beef jerky is pretty good, and Teryaki (however it's spelled) is the grossest shit in the world for me.

I'd just like to point out that almost all flavour (that is, the combination of taste and smell) perception is a learnt behaviour. That is, no food is inherently disgusting. Which makes sense considering that is no one enjoyed eating a food (and there were other available food stuffs) it wouldn't exist as a food.

The reason the OP dislikes jerky and loves salted lollies is because these were flavours he was taught to be disgusting and delicious as he has grown up. It's also the reason some of the other posters have the exact opposite views on the flavour of those two items.

Obviously there's a great many people who like these items otherwise they wouldn't be sold. And your pallet does change as you get older changing your perception of flavours. But a great factor on both of those is your culture and the flavours you were exposed to as you were developing.

As for me, the one food I don't enjoy is oysters. Admittedly I haven't had them in a couple of years and so it's probably time to try them again but the last time I did they just tasted like salty, chewy mucus.

I've had homemade Venison (deer) jerky a few times, and it was really tasty. As far as beef jerky goes, all the major store brands are crap or close to it. They tend to taste like brittle leather soaked in whatever cheap seasoning was used, rather then anything resembling meat.

It's a very large difference in quality/flavor.

As far as root beer, generally the brands that come in cans are mediocre at best. Saranac, Ibita, Boylan, and IBC (has fallen a bit in quality unfortunately) are all pretty solid examples of decent root beer. If you don't like one/all of those, you probably don't like the drink.

Well, turns out it doesn't live up to the hype at all. In fact, it tastes like crap.

[sub]This is what it tastes like, only dried up and old. Does it look tasty? Well, it bloody isn't.[/sub]

Fuck beef jerky. Beef jerky is poo.
I don't know what you tried, but there are obviously varieties of jerky. Some better than others. The jerky here is the absolute best you will ever taste: http://stevesoriginal.com/store

Well, there's different types of beef jerky...
"Jack Link's meat snacks
Beef jerky
original
Family quality guaranteed"

Is what the bag says.
Well there's your problem, Jack Link's tastes more like cow shit than beef jerky...and no, I don't know what cow shit tastes like, but it can't be pleasant. If I had to imagine, I'd guess it tasted like...well...Jack Link's beefy jerky. If you want "brand name" beef jerky, grab yourself a Slim Jim (if you can find'em in your country).

Though I'm here to tell ya that the best beef jerky is home made by an actual hunter, and in most cases isn't really "beef" (deer jerky, for instance, is fantastic :p).

Mmmmm Fenalår.
I fully agree. Fenalår gets how dried meat should be done. You don't buy some pansy ass dog food strips or whatever. You buy the entire thigh. Like a man.
And it's proper salty.
Plus, lamb's meat is best meat.

Edit: By the way, did you know non-scandinavians don't like salty licorice? And they despise salmiakk. It's hilarious to watch them trying to eat it. Lots of videos on youtube.

What's the chocolate called?
How's it look?
What does it say on the packaging? Stratos? Crispo? Melkesjokolade? Bergene melk?

Oh, and by the way:

beef jerky is amazing, though there are some less than good iterations of it. i do not recommend Slim Jims. that's not beef jerky, and if that is your experience, i apologize. however, buy yourself a bag of Jack Links. if it doesn't blow your mind with awesome, you simply have broken tastebuds and/or are from another planet.[/

:p I'm not the one who neglected to read the first few comments of the thread in which you specifically mentioned that Jack Links was what you had bought.

Here's some twisted logic for you, though. He suggested you'd hate Slim Jim but would love Jack Links, I suggested you should try Slim Jim and that Jack Link's tasted like wet, salty ass. My assessment of Jack Links is the same as yours, his is the opposite, as such you should take MY word over his and give Slim Jim a try...you might just like it. :3

Heh but other than that, I stand by the fact that the best beef jerky isn't brand name anyways. You need to find yourself a hunter that actually makes the stuff himself and give some REAL beef jerky a try.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention that I do agree with you on the note that Root Beer tastes like a fat-man's armpit sweat with a bit of vanilla flavoring.

Can't be bothered to now that Fenrizz reminded me of Fenalår.

See, what you do is you rip the thigh off a sheep, then you salt it and dry it and let it hang in a cottage for somewhere between three months to three years.
Then you cut off thin, delicious, slices of awesomeness.

That does indeed sound delicious, and that's pretty much the same process for making some good jerky, just different meats.
