With Kimmel being fired and the white house being staffed almost exclusively by criminals, drunks and insane people its worth reminding Americans that MAGA only has so much power over your country because you allowed it. This is not a public realignment. This is not a rebirth of conservative ideology or even an ideological takeover of the far right.

Trump himself is still as maligned as ever with over half the nation constantly either being negative of him, or outright rejecting him, and Republican hobbies like theocracy and slavish corporate devotion are still deeply unpopular. Rather than a public realignment you instead have a government coming to power in a modest victory due to enough voters maliciously sleepwalking into the Trump takeover they all new was coming but refused to stop. And with his average mandate the current administration just brute forces their changes of American society, public approval of it be damned. After all the whole point of their plan is that they'll no longer need public approval once they've curtailed democracy.

But they only have this chance because enough Americans willingly sleepwalked into it, rather than enthusiastically embraced Trump. And since the numbers have never been on Trump's side and still aren't you could grind the nation to a halt if you really wanted. Same goes for corporations. Pretty much all of them have enough resources, savings and power to oppose Trump or sit out his years in office. That they kiss his boots isn't because he forced them but because a far right regime with a distaste for consumer protection is in line with their interests. They surrendered due to choice, not pressure.

And as I've said many times, the American public is to blame. They all knew this would be the outcome and the problem doesn't lie with the MAGA movement glorifying Trump's strangling of democracy. The problem lies with the Americans who knew this, who knew it to be bad but stubbornly refused to prevent it. The history books will likely be intensely critical of the 2024 American electorate, and the public as a whole.

Well, there's certainly truth to that, but they'd also need to be united if they wanted to meaningfully oppose Trump. The first one that tries gets an example made of them while the others watch.
