Well, yes.I want to the war to have a lasting end. Which legalizing land grab wars in Europe doesn't achieve. I also wants the killing of Ukraine's citizens to stop which can't be achieved by giving Russia Ukrainian lands in which they can butcher the citizens, and use as a staging ground for the next invasion of a Ukraine that's been made unable to fight back.
Fundamentally, Russia is pushing for a change to the post-WW2, UN-based order where it is supposed to be unacceptable for countries to strip other countries of land through war. It does so to legitimise its own expansion and empire-building, because it's a failing state unwilling to cut its cloth to meet it's new circumstances. Whilst this principle of stopping countries seeking territorial expansion has often not been enforced, it nevertheless has also been used to limit many countries' territorial greed.
It is hard to imagine that ditching this principle, for instance by legitimising Russian gains in Ukraine, reduces war in the long term. It is a green light for every militaristic nation in the world to take a pop at their neighbours if they fancy grabbing some resources.
This creates a significant risk of sucking the USA into more conflict involvement as well. In a dog eat dog world of this sort, aggression will end up directed against US allies / partners. The USA will have the choice to prop up weaker associates, or lose access to global resources, or that the USA will need to launch actions against countries to access resources.
