So... they are nigh-universally loved, produce awesome games, apparently don't do anything evil and still manage to make a metric crapton of cash?

Huh.

Remind me again why more game companies aren't imitating Valve...?
this is truly a question for the great minds of the world.

since the only answer i can come up with is 'cause they're dicks'

It faces very little in the way of competition (though EA continues to pimp its Origin service, its user numbers pale in comparison to Steam's).
Wouldn't GamersGate be a better comparison to Steam as a sales service then Origin?

This is the first time I've seen a billionaire that I feel deserves every cent that he has.

Give credit where credit is due, he's earned his money. He produces a product that people want to buy. Which is how capitalism should work incidentally.

I don't really give my appreciation to companies this big (not out of sheer hatred towards them, but rather because I don't tend to care too much) but I'll have to agree with the statement "Well, they earned it". Look at their games, and then look at Steam, probably the most pleasant type of DRM in existence, and I think you'll agree on it.

It'd be funny and actually somewhat even rewarding to see when Half Life 3 will beat the sales of Modern Warfare 3. Well at least I hope I live that day...
It's DRM that actually IMPROVES a gaming experience. I really hope some other companies (looking at you EA! Ubisoft, don't think I can't see you!) realise you don't have to be arse-holes to Make money.

And don't be silly, Gabe will come out of cryogenic stasis in the year 3333, release Half-life 3 and bring world peace. We will all be long dead.

A little ditty for you all, sung in the tune of Portal's still alive:

*ahem*

Gabe is a triumph.
I'm making a note of his success.
It's hard to overstate his satisfaction.

Valve software.
They do what they must, because they can.
Making games for all of us,
Except for half-life 3.

But there's no use crying over every delay,
Gabe will just keep quiet 'til we die of old age,
But when it's finally done it will be so much fun,
for the people who are still alive.

Still alive.

It saddens me that 1,226 people in the world are Billionaires, and 4 Billion people in the world have next to nothing.

Anyway, I think in Newell's case he's earned it. Excellent service and customer relations, whilst making awesome entertainment for fortunate enough to play it. Gabe is a genius.

(I know I'm a Valve fanboy, but I have every reason to be).

Don't take numbers like this at face value.
Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay.

And just because they have this theoretical worth, doesn't mean the company would not sell for a lot more or a lot less.

Don't you mean Gabe Newell? [small]I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.[/small]

On topic, unsurprising. I would have thought he'd be worth more, actually. How much does Steam rake in on a daily basis?
A lot. Even with the country specific thing, well priced games and good deals are enough.

We can't complain. Valve are the only Devs that we can all fully agree have good business that DON'T fuck us over.

You would think that he could afford a better shirt.
Nooo, Gabe is nothing without his awesome Polo shirts!

I think Gabe is worthy of this money, along with the rest of Valve.

You sir, are a genius.

Still, Gabe deserves that much money. Hell, he deserves Bill Gates's money. Gabe can have my money any day.

Is that dollars or kilograms?

In all seriousness he deserves it, for his ingenuity, dedication and excellent customer relations.

Also I love Steam like most people love food and water.
