Gallery of the Day - Pixelated Boobs

With all of the hullabaloo surrounding the release of Dragon's Crown, its abundance of boobs and whether or not it is fair to judge a game by its art style, we are celebrating the history of boobs in videogames with this brief look back.

Should a videogame review take artistic style into account when grading the overall experience of a game? Where do artistic liberties end and when does commentary on current social issues take precedence? These are all important questions that have dominated the forums in recent days and if you have thoughts on the matter, this thread is for you. Remember, their eyes are up here.

One thing that does seem kind of sad though is how much more obvious they made Cortana's body shape as the series progressed. Partially because of technology I guess, but that doesn't really explain the unnecessary increase in bust size.

So to contribute to the discussion that has since been added:

Should a videogame review take artistic style into account when grading the overall experience of a game?

Yes, because the artistic style was clearly done so on purpose. If you make a certain artistic style then people have every right to criticise it considering it's what they are spending all of their time looking at.

Mirrors Edge for example was off-putting for many because it was so bright and over the top with colours. Games such as COD and other military shooters are frequently criticised for using a more limited palette.

If it is okay to criticise them for that, as well as graphical quality, then the chosen art style should most certainly be able to be used as a criticism.

Where do artistic liberties end and when does commentary on current social issues take precedence?

Never.

People should be able to design their characters and game however they damn well please.

If games are an art form then they are about expression, and artists have the right to do whatever they like as long as no laws are broken. If people don't like a game because the art style or because the characters are designed a certain way then yes, they have every right to dislike it because of it.

At the same time the artist has just as much of a right to not give a damn, because nobody is forcing them to buy it.

.......Yeah. I love the Hell out of Dark Souls but..."Amazing Chest Ahead". The only half defense that I have is that she's supposed to be a fertility goddess, and even as I type I realize how pathetic that defense is.

Do they need a reason to increase Cortana's bust size? Maybe that is the way she always looked in the minds of the creators and the technology just wasn't up to the task to really make her the way they originally wanted to. I think the fact that she looked more and more realistic over time only made her original design all the more noticeable as being very "shapely".

Yeah, that joke got old fast. Still, I like the story behind why Gwynevere is the way she is: Miyazaki envisioned her as being much more elegant and graceful, but when one of his staff showed him the concept art of what she is now, the artist has such a proud, hopeful look on his face that Miyazaki couldn't bring himself to say "No." xD
