This really begs the question: if so many developers love Baldur's Gate, why the hell does no one make that kind of isometric RPG any more?
Because it's harder to make an AAA title out of one. They still make them indie though.

OT: A lot of the higher ranks go to older games. Perhaps this is an indication of a trend of quality?
I've been looking for an indie BG-style 3/4 isometric RPG for ages, would you mind pointing me in the right direction? The only things I've found that were even close have been Avernum/Jeff Vogel and the upcoming Age of Decadence, but those are a very different beast.

I have half a mind to make one myself, I think the demand is great enough to turn a profit -- even with 2d graphics.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The fact that dead space is in here invalidates the vote and proves these people are idiots.

I too am curious to why Half Life and it's buddy Counterstrike didn't make the list. Warcraft should have be on there next to Starcraft, but for some reason WoW is there instead.Mario shouldn't have reached the top 20.I've always seen him as Nintendo's version of Sonic, but with a better life support system. I have mixed feelings on Silent hill. They've got a track record very similar Resident Evil. For the most part I been more creeped out (kinda scared) by SH more than RE.

Because "no-one plays Turn Based Strategy any more."

That's a pretty solid list. Needs more Minsc though.

Much as I hate to say it, neither Baldur's Gate nor Diablo deserves to even be close to the top of this list. The best games of all time have all been made in the past five years, and for a good reason.

While I felt some games didn't really deserve to get there (Dead Space) and that some really should be there (Fallout Series), I'm happy that my all time favorite Deus Ex beat Mario.

I am somewhat irrateted by this list. What has Dead Space done that other horror games haven't done better? Why is Tomb Raider on that list? It's a fun game, it's a great game, but everything that TR did had been long surpassed. Arkham Asylum was a great game as well, but you just can't convince me that Blood Money isn't supperior to it. And why is Mass Effect on that list. Seriously, it's not a bad game, but it never became anything more than a Star Control wanna-be, and not a very good one at that.

Now where is Doom, where is Half-Life, why isn't there a single old-time RPG and why for god sake isn't there a single 4X on that list?

Butt kicking!! For justice! :D I'm not sure about the rest of the top, but i don't really care that much. Baldur's gate deserves to be in first place, from my point of view. There are only a couple of other games that could challenge that as far as i'm concerned.

Honestly not the worst list ive seen, with many appropriate games included. There are however some obvious games included that shouldnt be in my opinion (Dead space for example), and some even more glaring games missing that should be there (Half-Life series, Counter Strike, etc)

And don't expect another game like Baulders Gate in the corporate age of gaming. Indies might get close to the experience but they're still too small to put in the same time for such a game.

But wait... Dead Space? Tomb Raider?

Why Dead Space instead of Silent Hill 2? This is a "Best of all time" list. Where Are:
-Doom
-Quake
-X-wing
-Tie-fighter
-King's Quest Series
-Wing Commander series
-Ultima Online
-GTA 3
-Red Alert 2
-original C&C
-Fallout 1 & 2

There's more I could list, but what the hell, did they only ask developers who weren't older than 23?

That sort of decision is ultimately based on what they think will sell, not what they'd prefer to be playing themselves.
Games like that would sell, they always did, even with the new popular FPS genre taking off. The difference is that now, the big publishers don't think they'll make ENOUGH assloads of cash with those games like "Modern Battlefield Duty" so they won't bother. As good as Dragon Age was, the second was a watered down hack and slash because EA said they wanted it more "accessable" because dragon age didn't make as much money as they thought it should.

This list is about as valid as Yahoo's top 10 games list. Here's some of the numerous things I see wrong with this collection:

NO fighting games. Really? Not even Street Fighter II or the series?
NO GTA games. The massive impact these games had on the industry cannot be ignored.
Diablo games ranked #2. Really? There's only been 2 of these games and from what I played, they weren't exactly innovative or industry changing.
Deep Space. The idea that this would be up there but NOT put on the Resident Evil series (or even Alone in the Dark for that matter) is ludicrous.

I feel like these developers were trying to be "too cool" for this list, so they didn't pick games that they thought were actually the most FUN and instead picked stuff that was most "meaningful" and artistic. They went for the "hip" factor as opposed to the "truth" factor. Either that or it seems to be that most developers are tossers.

Assassin's Creed? Dead Space? Looks like some people might have been voting for their own games. :p
Dead Space, yes. Overappreciation much.

But Assassin's Creed, as a series? It's pretty God damn awesome. I can really see people 10 years from now remembering how good it was, just like the 3 first series from the list ARE THE GAMES.

You see an RPG, you remind yourself of Baldur's Gate. You see hack'n'slash, you call it Diablo clone (because Diablo did it best, case closed), and if you see point and click adventure ga... or when you used to see p'n'c adventure games, you'd compare them to Monkey Island. Especially if they had comical elements.

But Call of Duty? HALF LIFE PEOPLE?

Remember people that a game devloper has a different state of mind from you in terms of what a 'great' game is.

Fun =/= great.

Although I will admit some of these choices are moronic. But hey, there never will be a 'perfect' list because opinions are just that: opinions.

While I do like the shout out to old goldies there are alot of really bad choices up there, which in the end makes the whole thing silly.

*sighs*

Game devs being people, just like us, this is nothing but a highly subjective portrait of a *small* community's preferences. So Baldur's Gate made the top. Yay!

One of your favourite games or Street Fighter or whatever didn't? Who cares? Make up your own list if you care that much. It's also going to be subjective, and someone else is bound to say "What?! No! Street Fighter IV is garbage!" or something to that effect.

Still, pretty happy about Minsc and Boo getting the hop honors. I wonder what Xzar and Montaron have to say about that, though.

According to the source (Eurogamer) this was a all-time favourites list, not best/greatest game of all time list.
Favorite =/= Best
Atleast in my opinion that's a huge difference.
This also makes i harder to argue what games should and shouldn't be on the list.

The developer may like the idea but you've got to remember that they have to get their publisher on board with the idea too.

Regrettably pitching that kind of idea to most major publishers these days probably wouldn't get you very far :/.
I guess that's what indie developers are for though.
