I like excellent games as much as the next person. Much like watching an amazing movie, or reading an engrossing book, a great game is something worth hanging on to, talking about, playing again, etc.

Reading through this website though I get the image of a bunch of angry cynical people sitting on their couch playing the same 3 games from the late 90s over and over again. Sure, not every game can be a perfect infallible classic game, but does that really mean we should ***** and moan every time a game comes out that is merely "fun". *GASP*

I do like a game that has some innovative new mechanic, or unparalleled customization and story, but sometimes don't you just wanna sit down and watch stuff blow up? Or hack and slash slightly different mindless zombies?

I guess I just have a hard time thinking that so many people on this forum actually found no enjoyment from the games they claim.

I can't think of a game example at the moment, but recently I've read a few books that I wouldn't call "great" or "classic" by any stretch, but they kept me entertained throughout, and that was that.

The question:
What are some games that while not innovative, perfect, or a sign from above, were still a lot of fun?

edit: A touchy lot today aren't we? This was definitely not meant to be insulting, I don't think anyone can deny that "this game isn't innovative" is a common complaint on any gaming site. Just looking for the 'guilty pleasures'

Well, thatnks for insulting everyone here before getting to the point (or saying everyone here is me).

Yes, I enjoy games, but not often long after I've completed it, so the joy fades. I'll just say the last game I completed; Comic Jumper.

Saints Row 2.

/topic.

Sure, at its core it's a pretty blatant GTA clone, but there are so many things it just does BETTER than GTA, not least of which is to just sit back and let you have fun.

Group us as a whole to insult us, then ask us a question pertaining to what you are insulting us for.

Isn't that like calling someone stupid then asking him what he thinks about the theory of relativity?

My intention wasn't to insult anyone. If you look through a few game threads, most of them have a few "this game isn't innovative" posts. My point is mostly a "so what?"
A lot of comedies are completely devoid of any story, 'purpose' and meaning, but their still fun to watch.

Mostly just wondering what "guilty pleasures" the escapist has.

Darksiders basically borrowed all of it's gameplay elements from other games. But it still is an awesome game.

I'm having a blast with Dead Rising 2, just running around and using pretty much anything to mess with the zombies (never played the first one, so this is still novelty for me). That and Infamous are actually the only games this gen where I would use the word fun first to describe them.

Some other games that give me a pure joy to play would be Super Mario All-Stars and World on SNES, Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer (Ripto's Rage! in US) and Year of the Dragon, and finally Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, though I kinda overplayed that one when I first got it so I probably won't play it again in some time, as awesome as it was.

Mercenaries 2 was piss poor. It had so many annoying bugs, it was hard to complete the game. But throwing C4s around a building and some rocket launchers for good measure to watch a sky scrapper crumble is.. just.. beauty.

I second this, and even more, I enjoy it more than the games it rips off (except for Portal). Not innovative, but I found it impressive that they were able to combine game mechanics from lots of different games into one coherent game.

I like playing the untangle puzzle game on Ubuntu. I've been getting a lot of mileage from FUEL as well since I enjoy driving across a wasteland on a dirtbike while listening to music. Not really sure which games from the 90s I should be constantly replaying in order to refill my rage meter.

Well Halo doesn't innovate much, but I still think it's one of the best and most fun games out there.

To me, fun is all that matters in a game - oh, it's also innovative? Good for it, but I don't care about the actual innovation. What I care about is that it's fun.

I suppose... innovations that make games more fun in general should be adopted throughout the genre. Often, they aren't, because I am willing to admit that games companies seem to be afraid of change (see: Homeworld, and the way it (+ sequels) is the only fully 3D RTS out there still). But still, if a game manages to appeal to my sense of fun, then it's a good game in my books. Even if it steals all its elements from other games (which also means I'm unfazed by "dude, X did it first, you should play that instead" arguments).

Modern Warfare 2 would come to mind.

It's everything I have seen before yet it's mercilessly fun.
And epic.

If only the damned multiplayer did not get in the way.

All games are flawed, they're written by humans. Thus there are no perfect games. Which is good. Perfection doesn't leave room for improvement or innovation, and since we don't have perfection I am confident that games will continue to innovate and change over the course of time.
That being said no game will ever take the place of Super Mario World for me. I can still spend hours on that game even though I know all the secret warps and the like.
