im reading the books and im liking it so far. it is a bit dark and colourless though but if you like dreary medieval style books you'll like the book. everyone says the books are less dirty and thats perfect for me, im happily a very weird human that doesnt like porn and the like, just not my cup of tea.

if you still like medieval books but with massive amounts of colour read the Redwall series, yah its for a younger readers but theres lots a blood, swords, castles, wars, sieges and its got talking animals!

Here's a slightly better question... why the hell is Hodor so popular on the internet? He's hardly in the show at all, doesn't say anything besides his own name, doesn't do anything of even the slightest importance other than tote Bran around, and overall has less impact on the plot or any of the other characters than the average horse! Osha I could understand. Bronn also seems pretty likeable most of the time. But all the sidekick love goes to Hodor? I just don't get it. Does he do stuff in the books that doesn't come up in the show? (For the record, I fully intend to read the books, but only once summer comes around and I actually have the time for it).

That's because he's a funny smartass with the skillz to stay alive when folks want to kill him. Thanks to this thread piquing my interest I found out this afternoon that he's played by Jerome Flynn. How did I not spot that?! Respect just went through the roof; the thought of Bronn crooning Unchained Melody just slays me..

I'm just hoping that Martin can get his shit together for books 6 and 7. He fell apart after Storm of Swords.

Erm... why is any series of books or TV series worth its salt loved? That pretty much applies here, with a spattering of some gratuitous porn in the TV series to attract those too superficial to give it a try otherwise.

For me in particular it's how realistic the characters are. You get to know each and every one of the main characters to such an extent that they start to become a living, breathing person to you. Tyrion Lannister may not be my favourite character in the history of literature, but he's definitely the closest a bunch of words has become to being a person to me. I guess that's why I don't like the TV series as much: The lack of a constant narration of every one of the characters feelings leaves it up to the acting rather than the writing, and even if most of the acting is stellar it simply can't compare to the level of emotional detail that simply narrating the thing can.

That, and I just LOVE memorising lists and lists of heraldry and names for when they show up for a one-page-plot-detail six hundred pages later. Well, not really, but that illustrates how well fleshed out the world is. If Tolkien wrote volumes of mythology for Lord of the Rings, Martin has by this point pretty much written a census for ASOIAF.

It has efficient pacing (unlike the books)
It's sexy
It has a lot of very excellent acting
People are really latching onto the "anyone can die" feel of the story

I know why Bronn is likeable, its Hodor that confuses me.

Well, I'd say it's the plots and characters. So you're kinda fucked there.

From what I'vge seen, it's just another show that advertises itself as some epic mid evil saga yet it's just talking and nudity.
Medieval*.

And talking tends to be a big part of quite a few TV shows. The point is that all the talking leads into a giant bunch of cluster-fucks, and it has no qualms about killing off characters.

"Oh my GOD! FUCKING JOFFREY!"

Why is there no mention of Joffrey? Come on, step it up guys.
Hmm. Let me think...

Because I just can't wait for the annoying degenerate spunk-stain to die, die and die again? Because I really think only dying once is not enough for him?
Yes, that is why he is so entertaining to watch. The smug little ponce. It's the same deal with Hazama from BlazBlue, he's such a dick but he does it in such a spectacular, dramatic and maybe amusing way that you can't help but be entertained/intrigued/interested by it

Make a new spin off, Joffrey of Thrones: The Legend of Joffrey. I want to see all the shenanigans that happened off screen.

I think a lot of people are in it for the tits.
I hate this logic. of "It's popular, it must be beacues it shows boobs." The internet is a thing, people, the boobs might be a nice bonus but do you really think that the series would have so many fans for so long if it was merely a porno with plot?

As someone else already said, it would not have nearly as many fans if it was an exploitative grind-house/porn film.

You know, I tried getting into Spartacus but I just couldn't. I didn't care for the style. It worked for me in 300, but I honestly can't watch a whole series of it.
Same for me. I've seen, what, four episodes, and every time it really left me with the feeling that I've seen enough and that I've seen it all.

Nothing like Game of Thrones. Nothing like Sons of Anarchy. Nothing like... anything I'm looking forward to get more of.

For many people who are not familiar with the deeper cuts of the fantasy genre, it provides a wonderful alternative to the generic tropes that popularize the genre (see Feist's Riftwar Saga for the most egregious example) and shows them a more rounded version. It's also incredible dark and cynical, which is pretty much guaranteed to draw in an audience in our dark and cynical culture, plus everyone else watches it and sometimes we just want to be a part of the conversation.

Those are the most glaring reasons, but it's also a well written/acted show with intrigue, drama, violence, and nudity.

I've read the first book (They're HUUUUUGE, and college students have no time), and I can tell you that what I liked about it was the characters. They are all individual people, with their own aims and desires. No one is perfect, and everyone has a secret (or three!). The only thing that drove me crazy was how confusing the plot could be, due to the fact that you need a darn spreadsheet to keep track of everyone at all times.

I highly recommend it to you, in either book or show form (though I haven't seen the show version myself). Just, don't get attached to any of the characters. Chances are that one will die. :p

Basically, it's popular because of fanservice. And yet people hate Anime for doing the same thing.
It isn't, and people - I - dislike some of it for the same reasons they hate some anime. I don't have a moral objection against nudity, sexual behavior or suggestive imagery on tv unless it's for the sake of it. While many of GoT's shots are done for the sake of them they are nowhere near a infslaptarded as often done in animes, and there are plenty of instances where they are used well.
