Gamers! Why is this so hard?

Is it? I mean, sure. Everyone likes a good argument, and I would be lying if I said I had never once been obnoxious about any of my opinions. But in gaming fandom, it seems that we take this facet of humanity, and turn it up to 11. You don't see this level of immature bitching and counter bitching over movies do you (with the possible exception of Twilight), or with TV? That;s not even going outside media culture and already the gamers are looking like brats compared to everyone else.

For example:

Music. I've seen people bashed, derided, scorned, shunned and hated simply because they listened to something person B thought was "uncool". (Granted primarily a teenage thing, but also in a few adults as well) "You listen to (Linken Park/Britney Spears/Coldplay/Random Band)? You're such a looser!"

Yes movies. "OMG you watch (Twilight/My Little Pony/Underdog/Superman/Random Movie)? You're so dumb!"

And like others have mentioned, even the gaming community pales in comparison to the amount of turd-flinging that occurs in POLITICS.

My problem with stuff like that is not so much that my games are being outsold by games I don't play, but that I have nobody to talk to about the ones I do. Yeah, I'm sure I can easily find someone on the internet that likes my game as much as I do, but I prefer a face to face conversation rather than waiting for a reply from "nameless faceless man or woman who also likes *video game title*."

The big reason is because person+anonymity=asshole. Most people have asshole tendencies, but don't act upon them in public because they don't want to be considered an asshole. So when they get on the internet and people don't know who they are, they can let this out.

As far as comments about haters and fanboys, this rule holds true: the smallest and most annoying group also tends to be the most vocal. This can be applied to anything, from Call of Duty and Skyrim to My Little Pony and Naruto.

For me, I get vocal because most of the CoD players I run into happen to be complete jackasses(not saying any of you are, since I've more than likely never run into any of you in real life lol). Hell, I had someone try to take my 3DS from me because they were "liberating me from bad games like that crap Zelda so I can play a manly game with guns and blood." Guess what his favorite game was. If this were an isolated incident I'd pay it no mind, but when most people you run into who like a series either insult you for liking a different series or make fun of you for not liking the series they like your perceptions of that group tend to get colored...

This. I've just spent the last twenty minutes or so reading the comments on an MSNBC.com story about how New England is supposed to be getting smacked by a massive snowstorm this weekend, and more than half of the comments are "righties" bashing "lefties" for absolutely no reason, or people otherwise arguing vehemently about global warming and insulting Al Gore.

I agree. I think a lot of people put way too much emphasis on things they don't like, when they would be much better off just focusing on things they do like. I knew a guy who hated MMOs so he would write up huge rants about his hatred of them and people whom play them. He would bash them as "not real gamers" etc. I think that negative energy could be focused on something he does like.

People often bash me for liking JRPGs. I just shrug it off as everyone is entitled to their opinion. Most however I felt didn't know enough about the games I play to actually construct a good argument against them.

It probably won't make any difference in the broader scheme of things, but if just 1 or 2 people who come to this thread think "Yeah, I really could be doing much better for myself than I am right now", it would make me a lot happier about all this.

I think you'll find that this, word for word, is the exact same reason why people make the comments you seem to hate. 'Voice of reason in the herd of sheep', and all that.

Its like a placebo, you know it won't do you any good, but you feel much better after the fact. Just like you decide to express your frustration in a semi-productive way (semi due to the fact that while your post is reasonable and well thought-out, it is unlikely to produce any results that were not already deduced or change the way people behave), other people express and release their frustration in the easiest way possible: one-sided anger, bereft of any reflection or meaningful insight.

I choose to release my angst and frustration through sports or video-games, as do a lot of people.

... Seriously. With how long Gamers were considered outcasts or abnormal by "normal society", it has finally becomes somewhat mainstream and acceptable. It finally becomes a hobby that is somewhat respectable rather than overlooked (even an artform in the eyes of some.) And what's the first thing we do with this new found social acceptance?

I know the internet is the absolute LAST ideal medium for preaching a "can't we all just get along?" opinion. But hey, can't say no one said anything now.

But to be fair, forums are where the vocal minority go. Mainstream people that aren't complete tools are the ones that sit silently in the background and just enjoy the game, without worrying what others think about their taste in games. In other words, people on the internet take each other too seriously (including ourselves.)

Most people are extremely stupid. Gamers are just slightly less stupid than the rest of the internet. Forget about IQ, think in terms of good sense. You're more likely to be stupid than not stupid. This is also outside the gaming community. Many many people actually start yelling and bashing you if you try to bring up something they dislike, even if you have valid points they still won't listen. People are people, nothing we can do about it.

When I look at all the people who make up a community I belong to act like this, it makes me ashamed to call myself a gamer.

This point is kinda why I have such a dislike of CoD. So many people day 1 buy the same broken, buggy, rehashed trash every year it comes out and then buy the 15 dollar map packs that have maybe 4 maps and when some of those came from the previous games, it just tells the game publishers that there consumer base is full of magpies who will buy anything shiny regardless if its any good or not. It promotes more cookie cutter games that follow the same formula to make the easy money while games with a more niche consumer base or unique / "untested" design do not get the funding to be made because the game companies can remake the same thing and keep making money. I personally like my games to be creative and of good quality while CoD's success is a direct attack on the possibility for that to happen.

Of course everybody has the right to play whatever the hell they want and sadly I can't stop them but it sure as hell sends me into a rage when people ***** and complain about CoD for all the imbalances and shitty design and yet the continue to keep buying it. I will continue to voice my opinion about the problem of CoD and the impact it can have on the game industry in the hopes that people realize that if they don't want to see more games like this to be made on a yearly basis then they should stop buying it. If they want more of the same then they can just hand over there money and be happy with CoD 2012.

(Oh btw the way to bypass the whole "CoD monthly subscription" issue is to keep releasing yearly version of the same game.)

Real life is mundane, and recognized accomplishments in life take a lot of effort to achieve. Therefore, some people take whatever route they can take to find accomplishment. In this instance, we find two groups:

- People who think that, because they play CoD, they are better than everyone else.
- People who think that, because they DON'T play CoD, they are better than everyone else.

Essentially, they think because they play/don't play something, they are better than the other group, thus giving themselves a smug sense of accomplishment, when they really haven't accomplished anything. They boast about it continuously in order to reinforce their egos.

Normally I just ignore things I don't like (unless someone brings it up, which fans do often), but some things are just too fun to hate on.

In case you didn't hear enough fans whining, in DmC the protag was completely redesigned and is half demon half angel. At first I was angry like most of the fans but then I saw this:

There's also tons more images making fun of it and I find it hilarious, to the point I don't hate the game anymore. I just see it as a joke.

Well I agree with part of your argument that Gamers can't seem to live and let live, like the whole stupid debate about which system is the best (they're all good and useful for specific kinds of gamers, no 1 console is better then any other and the PC is better then none of them) the only thing I'd say is that the reason people bring down CoD for the repetitive nature of the franchise is because it promotes stagnation as a profitable norm for companies. It's like saying "Hey Nintendo how about you just sell us Ocarina of Time again but call it something else" it's that kind of thing, it's not cause we hate the things that make CoD fun (it's not for me but I see why some people would like it) it's that we don't like CoD's bad habits, hell they could throw in a bizarre 1st person fruit mixing and table waiting simulator as a way of regenerating health quickly and I'd praise the game as an innovator any day, the point is it's not CoD we're mad at there it's companies who think we'll just by anything with a CoD logo on it and a bigger number
