I have noticed an uncomfortable trend in videogames:
Security taken to uncomfortable levels.

Have a look at Starcraft 2 and C&C 4 , both eagerly expected, both without LAN support.
C&C 4 actually requires an internet connection to play Single Player !!!

***GEEK CONTENT***
If you know a little bit about BGP and WAN - two essential Internet technologies, you can understand my frustration and fear that the consumer may suffer.Servers for MMOs may always be up but i doubt every new game will have priority on bandwidth and equipment-hence my fears.
**END GEEK CONTENT***

What do you think ?
Is it a good idea to cut out LAN or even gameplay for security based on an active internet connection ?
Do you think we will be seeing more in the future ?

It took me a while to catch up to the industry, I've been playing old adventure games lately (and free ones) and lost track of the "real" world...

But i see a prohibition incident approaching : The more you ban the more tempting it becomes.

Alcohol consumption during prohibition was tripled !!!

You only just noticed?

Yeah, it's a baaaaad thing. Not just for PC either, Microsoft seems to be cracking down on Xbox too.

I'd call it one of the most misguided systems ever implemented, it doesn't stop piracy, it encourages it. Surely that's the worst thing you can do given what you're trying to achieve?

And not only that, but it's proven that it does that! Spore is a prime example, one of the most pirated games of all time, because it had restrictive DRM.

There are better ways to do it. There always are. I agree with Stardocks policy. They've accepted that no matter what they do, dedicated pirates are always going to pirate their games, so they get rid of DRM and internet activations and just try and focus on making a product so good that normal people will feel obligated to buy it. Hell, it worked for me! Back when I used to pirate a shitload of games (I don't anymore) I downloaded Galactic Civilizations 2 and it's expansions, and it was so good that I sent the RRP in Euros to Stardock with a letter of apology. I did the same with Psychonauts.

Thankfully, a lot of the most restrictive DRMs in games are on games I don't really care much about, like Bioshock 2 and Assassins Creed 2. The games I really love on the PC remain unaffected.
Yeah same for me. They also do that with GoG, and I've bought more games from there then I have anywhere else. I honestly think the security it most games these days is a joke. What if you didn't have an internet connection? You can't play the bloody game that's what.

Poor C&C4. Why would they do that? They have just made me not want to buy it now as I am a massive culprit of forgetting to save often and like everyone, my internet just decides to forget what it's doing now and then.

So they have just lost £30. Now multiply that by however many people feel like me about it.

Twats!

It just seems so counter-intuitive. I wonder if anyone actually said 'You know what would be a good idea? Lets make it so that you cannot play single player WITHOUT an internet connection. I can see nothing wrong with that'
