so basically what they're saying here is if it weren't for that damned game (whatever it may have been) influencing the kid and giving him ideas, they could just leave the car keys within reach of the child and unattended like good parents do. Damn these video games for giving unregulated and uncontrolled ideas to our children! /Sarcasm

In other news, video games assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, are responsible for the birth of Hitler, cause up to 100,000 deaths every month, and are personally responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Seriously, I think it's the parents' faults for letting a SEVEN-YEAR-OLD get a hold of THEIR CAR. How inattentive of a parent do you have to be to top that?

As a general rule, if Faux News creates a link between "x" and "video games," it's not true.

Well that has to be the slimmest grounds to base a video game related crime accusation on.
"Some of those games are pretty realistic"
and
"grand theft auto or something like that?"
Their research in the matter is clearly thin, having undoubtedly heard from a college about the dangers of vidio game violence, molesting the souls of good spirits in the dead of night. It is hard to think of a form of children's entertainment that adults genuinely approve of. Try to name one that has gone unscathed by media.

Fox News over-exaggerates and does a story that later turns out to be something else entirely? Stop the fuckin' presses...

Hold up a second, do you keep a permanent eye on your kids and know where they are 100% of the time? If you say yes, you're a liar. Parenting is a full time job yeah, but there are still toilet/lunch breaks when you've not got your eyes on them.

Think back to your days as a seven year old if you can. Did you parents always know exactly where you were and what you were doing? I doubt it.

You're partially right when you say that I can't really say I keep a close eye on my kids, mostly because I don't have any kids. But, as an outside observer that wasn't involved in this event, I can say that every reasonable fiber of my being screams that they should have just locked their car or kept a closer eye on their kid. Or maybe that's just natural.

And you do make a good point- parents can't always keep a close eye on their kids. Not all the time.

But my point remains- it was irresponsible to leave their car completely unattended or completely unlocked, and it was irresponsible to let their seven-year-old go on a joyride.

I'm sure the parents feel awful about this and I'm not calling them idiots, I'm just expressing my opinion as far as what they should have done.

Honestly? I'm more pissed at Faux News for making such a big deal out of this and blaming vidja games AS USUAL than at the actual parents.

NO! Because now you'll know how to operate inter-stellar stealth spaceships and laser technology!!!!! o-O

In all honhesty, anything like this is not caused by games, merely curiosity, bad parenting, or mental issues (ie, killings "caused" by GTA.)

Fox: "Was it games?!"
Random Joe: "I can't really comment on that--"
Fox: "Ha! I didn't hear 'no'!"

[Fox goes back to it's hobble]

Fox: "Great job everyone. High-fives all around!"

How do you know they left it unlocked? If the kid got the key into the ignition and made it go I daresay he knows how to unlock the car. Most cars these days are done with the clicky remote things anyway. It's not a great stretch for a child to nab the keys off the side and go out to the car.

Heck, I myself used to do that all the time when I'd left some stuff from school in the car. It's all too possible his parents thought he might be doing that - if they knew he'd taken the keys at all.

"Seven year old takes car for joyride" isn't exactly the most normal of circumstances to protect against. That's child proofing your bath just in case your seven year old decides it'd be a cool idea to see what drowning himself feels like. How many cases have you heard of that happening?

Exactly.

And yes, 'Faux' News are being their usual dickish self, but that's just who they are.

It may be who they are, but the 'I yam what I yam' excuse has never saved any serial killers or rapists from facing the proverbial music. Not that Faux News is made up of serial killers or rapists, but you get my point.

To drive a car in real life, you have to:

-unlock the car
-open the car door
-get in the car
-close the car door
-place your feet correctly over the pedals
-put the key in the ignition
-start the car
-put on your seat belt
-switch to the correct gear
-and softly hit the acceleration pedal

To drive a car in GTA IV, you have to:

-press "Y" to get in the car
-hold "RT" to go forward

If FOX News thinks GTA IV can teach people how to drive, they are truly idiots of the highest caliber.
this just made my day, and this is so true

This kid obviously learned to drive from a "driving simulator game" Like GTA where you have to control the clutch and.... oh wait... must have been Gran Turismo... oh wait...
I don't even live in America.. but damn it, I dislike Fox News.

The Fox News brand of making a news story. They do that for every single thing they report on.

I was first in being mad at this before it really came up. As soon as she said GTA, I KNEW they were going to go back to this pathetic not blaming the parents for their fault but the games instead thing.

Foul; that wasn't an interview.
That was a sound bite session so they can say (without lying, per se) "Grand Theft Auto" was named.
