Alright, let's be honest here. 95-100% of people who have played violent videogames DO NOT go insane, want to rape someone, or commit a hienous crime.

I for one was raised on Mortal Kombat, have played every GTA game ever made, and have just gotten done playing a Fallout: New Vegas marathon and not once, not for one measly second have I ever wanted to commit such crimes.

But here we have a hoity-toity psychiatrist who could have possibly gotten here degree out of a Coco Puffs box telling us the exact opposite. What gives?

As Yahtzee said in his Madworld review, "And so the I.Q. of the general public drops another notch."

When accused of making shit up, make more shit up to defend yourself and be a vague as possible. After all it's bound to work right? Right?

I refuse to comment further until she satisfactorily answers that.

Every time I hear about something like this I laugh my ass off, simply because these people actually believe the bullshit they're spouting.

I LOVE how she avoided the fact that her book is about as senseless as her claims.

I can see the new amazonbombs now: "Well, I was was going to give my negative opinion on this book but I figured that everyone has read it and knows how bad it is so I tossed my sources on an open fire fueled by my ego""

Eventually you might be able to spin a bullshit web so thick that it will stun all your opponents to silence, thus winning the day!

"...the increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in videogames." - statement, given that she's providing "evidence" suggests it's a statement of fact.

"I am sending this email to all of the reporters, editors, bloggers, gamers and others who have contacted me asking about what my opinion regarding violent video games was based upon." Where in the original context did she state she was expressing an opinion rather than researched and professional evidence?

Either you are presenting your opinion as someone who is also a professional, in which case you state that it IS just your opinion in a professional manner, or you are A professional making a professional statement which is supported by actual fact. The FBI pretty much shuts down the latter right out of the gate, which leaves someone shouting their own opinion as both fact and evidence... which is pretty much par for the course for FOX.

In all honesty though, the only thing that really irritates me about the entire FOX-run videogame stories is that there are so many gamers who actually get crude and/or offensive as retaliation at them. They're (FOX) idiots, they've unabashedly proved that time and again. Laugh at them, politely point out their errors, then walk away.

I can't stand that picture of her. She just looks like that one really super bitchy high school math teacher that every school had. (Yes, I know I'm being incredibly childish but everyone else seems to be doing a good enough job of refuting her actual arguments so whatever)

When the Columbine murders took place, there were national polls where people voted on what they believed caused the two young men to kill. Media violence ranked high on the list
Huh... Apparently to her a "national poll" counts as a "study."
ROIGHT! Well then I'm going to have a "national poll" over the cuteness of bunnies and then call it a study!

I R DOKTOR NAO.
The difference being that bunnies actually are cute, so you'd be calling a "national poll" a "study" to support fact, rather than utter bullshit.
Shit... I didn't think anyone would call me out on my bullshit.
HOLY COW! I just made a parallel between that author and my random act of stupidity.
Thank you for helping me laugh much harder at her expense tonight.
xD
Well, she deserves all the laughter at her expense we can provide.
In that case, let me join in on the merriment, lawl...

Anyways, I also want to add...
[sarcastic tone]Rapelay, I blame Japan... lets bomb the bastards and make them pay!

That national poll segway to inbue it with the validity of a study that has scientific merit is senseless and ignorant. Firstly, was this National poll representative of the nation, how was it carried out and by what authority? There are approximatly 308,750,000 people in the US, to make that national poll representative of the nations opinion (of which would be widely uninformed guesswork based of media hype, but that's not important here) it would have to at least take into account 20% of that population across an even distribution. Otherwise I could call Heat Magazines website polls as a representation of English speaking global opinion, since it's available worldwide, and anyone can vote on it. If we ignore the numbers by ratio, the poll loses any significance as a reflection of consensus opinion.

As for calling it a study, that is extending the bredth of the term study beyond reasonable use, to the extent anyone who observes something can claim it to be a valid study. I'd prefer the term, experiment. It has more implied implications and necessary requirments, like lack of bias.

I may read the links to the studies later, but it's half 4 in the morning and I'm sure you're analysis will suffice for now. I read the rapelay article though, until now I had never heard of it, and am not especially keen to seek it out...

i played the Bulletstorm demo and i personally feel no desire to go commit a violent crime and/or rape. however, i will admit the demo influenced me to go preorder the full version when at the end it called me "dick-tits."
You didn't get your rape face on? Trololol. And that's a great selling point, much like Prinny 2 where a bullet point read: "Use a canon to launch yourself to the stages". SOLD.

The Schwarzenegger rocket? Seems like her only notable success in her fight against media violence was 18 years ago. She must be proud...

Well, to be honest, it's perfectly natural of her to assume all gamers know of the studies that correlate video games and rape.

Oh wait.

Interesting...yet, I saw no mention of the words "game" or "rape" anywhere in there. It's as if she is only pretending to know what she's talking about.

...You know, this makes great material for my creative writing? It falls under the prose type "facade."

After nearly a week of waiting, Lieberman put out a statement today claiming that her response to demands for evidence was delayed because she'd filed them away on the assumption that "everyone already knew about these studies," and hadn't been able to get to them in a timely fashion because of her "obligations to patients and other professional commitments."
Translation: She didn't expect anyone to actually question her so now she has to pull some evidence out of her ass.

Games don't cause rape, but it doesn't help that way too many people fling that word around inappropriately in gaming. Just cuz some you may lose REALLY badly in a FPS doesn't mean you got RAPED, just saw you got your ass kicked or got owned or something.

Dane cook made quite a funny sketch about this actually...
