I'd say it's got nothing to do with the games, and everything to do with us as long time gamers. I used to get terrified of death and losing on things like Tomb Raider II and III, spent hours doing etc etc what you said about nightfire.

I replayed the two games recently, and none of that emotion was there. The games were the same, the characters identical, but I've been gaming for over a decade now, they just don't affect me the same.

That said, this is more of my issue, as previously stated. If a storyline is good, then a character death in-story will still affect me just as much, sometimes more, than in the old days. I think nowadays I pay more attention to the characters than to the magic of controlling a nubile young archaeologist, and it makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.

Play Demon's Souls if you want that intensity back. Even if the constant ambushes and traps don't keep you on the edge of your seat, the fact that you could have another player jump into your game at any point in time and come hunting you... yeah that's gonna keep you up at night. Especially because if you screw up you've got to start the level over and better yet you lose all the XP you had on hand unless you can get back to the spot where you died.

Having a serious punishment for dying turns a lot of casuals off of it, but hardcore gamers need to play for higher stakes to get the thrill back. It's like how the old Final Fantasy games used to be like "lets hurry up and save the princess/female party member/etc" ... I used to rush right to where I had to be. Now I realize it's safe to go shopping or grinding levels or items or whatever unless there's actually a clock counting down on the screen. When I spoiled that secret for my wife she was like heartbroken from the level of disillusionment.

Coded Arms for PSP is owning me right now... it's an old FPS with randomly generated maps.
That game seriously does not give a F about you or if you're having fun, you don't know if any given door is going to open into an area with a bunch of powerups and nobody looking your way at all, or like three guys with miniguns and rocket launchers and posionous flamethrowers. There's also no way to refresh your HP or ammo in a dungeon except by pick-ups or quitting and starting over. Touches like that definitely add an addictive level of tension.

You make a good point but that special kind of fear in games that arises from terror and not spooky monsters bearing down on you is still somewhat prevalent in many releases. Just the other day I was playing a game of Team Fortress 2 as the scout on 2fort. I was playing as the scout so I could unlock the BONK! energy drink so I'd be a complete scout. Well I kept making grabs at the intelligence and there is nothing more intense than being a low health scout with a glorified enemy bullet target strapped to your back in the lions den.
