Please. If a game is going to have "RPG-shooter" combat then the shooter bit needs to be at least competent.
The shooter bit was completely competent, provided you played the game like an RPG. When they focused on the shooter bit, they made it into a shooter, not an RPG.

Alone in the Dark. It had potential, but the execution was horrible.

And so the discussion of "what is an RPG" begins.
All I can see this devolving into is pointless bickering, so how about we just agree to disagree?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Still a damned good game, especially with the community patches to smooth out the experience. One of my favourites even! But it just could have... *should* have been more. Oh what I'd give for more games like Bloodlines. In my ideal gaming world Bloodlines wouldn't need community patches and would have been shipped perfect, would have sold fantastically, and Troika would still be around making Arcanum and Bloodlines 2.
Heh. I agree wholeheartedly. I am actually playing through VtM:B right now. 8th playthrough, first time I actually complete the game as an Malkavian. Afterwards I just need to play through as a Nosferatu, and then I have truly exhausted the game.
Me too. I've been hoping for a Bloodlines do over for years >< I'm kind of surprised it hasn't happened yet.

The original is still probably my all-time favorite game despite it's flaws. Great voice acting and dialogue, some really hilarious content (Stop. No, you stop. No, YOU stop!), but the main quest line was a bit too tightly scripted. Would be awesome to have the world be more explorable with more optionals side-quests.

@Madman- I might be remembering wrong, but I was under the impression Troika was going down pretty much as they released it so it was rushed, hence all the bugs at release. Really is a shame, though.

the force unleashed. The multiplayer sucked, it was better in TFU2 but even then it should have been refined more. Also make it more like no more heroes meets phoenix from X-men

The thing is, you don't get to define what an RPG is. The "RPG" has been around for decades. It already has a definition. The only reason we have a problem with this is because some idiot decided he could brand his action game an "RPG" and garner some additional sales from an already established market.

Player "skill" - how good you are at managing controls - has never played a role in RPGs since their inception in the 70s. Video games do not get to suddenly change that.

Dear god that game was fun while it lasted. Remake it, tweak it, add more races, classes and you would have one hell of a game.

It was. Probably the first descent into evil that Activision commited. Severely crippled a great game, and destroyed a fantastic studio.

Jet Force Gemini
Its my favorite N64 game and everyone I know who's played it agrees that its one of the best out there. It had everything. Aliens, zombies, giant bugs, teddie bears, and it was gorey as hell. It was the Dead Space of its time. Not only that, the gameplay was fun and great and I still play it today.

But Rareware has said the game was a mistake and is a horrible thing they'd rather forget about. If the game was remade with updated controls, graphics, and a few more levels/enemies put in, I think it could hold up today

I'd really like to see Mass Effect 1 done over with the more modern gameplay. ME1 is just not fun to play, at all, which is a shame since y'know, story and choices and new characters to play through the trilogy with.
krellen said:
Funny, I was going to say Mass Effect 2 to make it play more like Mass Effect 1, because ME2 is just not fun to play. There's more than enough shooters out there, and "gamers" really need to stop stealing all franchises to become shooters. Mass Effect just wasn't made for you.
canadamus_prime said:
That's exactly what I was thinking. Well I wouldn't say ME2 was no fun at all, it certainly wasn't as fun as it's predecessor. Of course I'm one of the apparently extremely few people who actually enjoyed the Mako driving sections in ME1 so there ya go.
Personally There are a few ways I'd change Both
ME1:
Go back and change the inventory for my squad mates and lower the number of weapons available so that that I don't have to spend half the game cycling through each character and calculating the stats to make sure they have the highest grade equipment. Simply being able to go through all the characters at once instead traipsing back between the lockers would have made things so much more expedient.

Including ammo types in the combat menu and making some of the talents passive buffs included in the level-up system.

Making the fucking sniper rifle actually usable without equipping double Recoil Dampers.

Upgrade the planetary environments and fix the controls on the Mako so that it doesn't handle like a Rockstar vehicle.

Change the mini-game for elements gathering so that it actually feel like I'm scanning for minerals and elements.

ME2:
De-nerf the assault rifle so that it actually feels like it's doing some damage. If I have spend whole clips chipping away through shields AND armor before I finally get to the enemy's health, is it any wonder I stick to the M-98 Widow?

Bring back the vehicle sections so I can actually do some dam exploring. What's the point of giving non-story mission planets all those interesting back stories if I can't go down there and see what all the fuss is about? "Travel Advisory"? Now you're just taunting me!

If Gardner has to keep pulling up his pants you'd think he'd wear a belt.

Cover: Make it so my squad mates can actually tell what side they're supposed to duck behind or that they actually take cover when I place them next to it. It really breaks the immersion when I'm trying to get them to take point before I open a door and Jake's still standing out in the open and menacing the corner at the other end of the room. Sure it's consistent with his character but he's not the only one this happens to. And am I going to stay undercover when I move from standing to crouching or am I going to get my skull hollowed out? DECIDE game!

Both Games: Will someone please tell my squad not to wonder in front of me while I'm firing. Or at the very least get Garrus to stop stealing my sniper kills!
ME1: Or they could include an "Optimize" button which would automatically equip the character with the best stuff you have that that character can use.

ME2: Also get rid of the damn heat sink thing and go back to the ME1 no ammo system.
You know what else breaks immersion? Chest high walls popping out of the floor/walls for no apparent raeson (yes, I spelled it like that on purpose).

Chrono Trigger. Besides the obvious need to update to HD sprites, the combat and battle mechanics are just too slow and boring by modern standards. The next time they port it to a handheld, or virtual console, etc they need to speed up the combat aspect of the game.
hmm? it doesn't need any of that it's a classic that already does what it needs to do.
OT:
Sonic 06.
if it was done right then maybe the sonic fanbase wouldn't be so pissy

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Both of them were cut down to meet deadlines; Ocarina of Time features an Ice Cavern that was intended to be an Ice Temple. Majora's Mask was going to have a week-long cycle as opposed to three-days, and the temples to match. These games already give me an orgasm; just imagine what they'd be like at peak condition. It's like the best stripper in the club being a cripple; what could she do with, given how much she can do without?

I would love to see a Golden Sun 1 amd 2 remakes preferable for the DS although it make sense to be for the 3DS.

Also runner up would be Phantom Crash.

Knights of the Old Republic 2

If you're ever played this game with the Restored Content Mod you'll know what I mean when I say this game had the potential to not just be better than the first game, but to absolutely blow it away in nearly every regard. The gameplay was more diverse and better balanced, the story was extremely compelling, the characters you interact with fantastically well realized. Only problem? Never finished. It was clearly shipped incomplete (Yes I know why!) and even with amazing mods like the above it's just never been allowed to reach that high promise.
Agreed, i'd also like to see Mount & Blade: Warband redone with some better AI. Forget F&S.

I would honestly love to see a remake of the game Lair, which I feel could have been amazing if it wasn't for the shitty motion control gimmick. Get rid of the whole idea that you could only play the game when it first came out with the motion controls, which reacted like a 5 year old who was dropped on their head once a day every day. Even though they came out with a pack that allowed you to use the analog sticks, it still controlled like ASS.

In short, remake Lair with no motion control anything.

I'm going to go with Mass Effect 2 playing more like Mass Effect the Original. Replace orbital resource mining with a better vehicle section (maybe a hover-craft: The Mako didn't feel like it had wheels to begin with). Also, I think I can safely say I'm the only person who thought the grenade system in ME1 was good. I do like that ME2 had a big cast of aliens who joined your party though. It would also have been nice if ME2 didn't include the fuck and shit words. I swear casually but it didn't seem necessary to have everyone suddenly learn what Fuck and Shit meant between ME1 and 2.

Knights of the Old Republic 2...it would have been nice for it to have been released as a completed game.

Duke Nukem 4-Ever - more weapon-slots than Duke has limbs, make The Devastator the least interesting weapon in the game (by adding interesting weapons in general), bring back health packs, take away mandatory turret sections, replace mandatory vehicle sections with optional jetpack ones, increase the variety of enemy types (slight changes like the berserk pigs don't count: palette swaps acceptable), stop trying to look like a modern shooter title since the market is already soaked through with those as it is. Also, rape jokes aren't acceptable.

Dragon Age 2? Yeeeaaaah..Dragon Age 2..
Also that...it would have been nice to have got an actual sequel to Dragon Age Origins (instead of a spin-off). It may have the 2 at the end but it was more beat-em-up than anything.

I thought of more! Take any super-hero game made by LJN and redo it. Hell, just about any game by LJN should be given a second chance.

Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled! There is no reason for that game to have ended up like it did...none what so ever. It would have printed money if it was the same as the SNES version + the addition of better graphics + extra levels + additional characters. Granted the only ones people may want to play as would be Casey Jones and, Splinter (also the one person who genuinely likes Venus)

Full House Tournament Fighter! The original game actually caused a riff in space and time which caused most people to forget about its existence. People may be ready for it now.

Shaq-Fu! Take away the bullshit map screen, replace the original characters with other popular ballers from back in the day (like Pippin, Rodman and, Jordan to name three) and fix the hit detection for fucks sake.

Grim Fandango - it should get a Special Edition with HD graphics, better characters done with more polygons and mouse control. It's one of the better stories ever in a PC and it' a shame it can't be fully appreciated.

Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate should get better graphics and full-talkie versions. Again it's necessary to appreciate two masterpieces. The games don't need 3d graphics, just better HD graphics.

Final Fantasy VII - the same case

Wing Commander - maybe more than a remake it needs a reboot

Ultima - the same as Wing Commander.

X-Com - Oh, it's already happening! Great!
