Hmmmm. Magic system with head-set usage would be fun. And a graaaannnddd spell book. Yeah... you'd look/sound like a total idiot but it would be fun :).

Oh and to make you angry: Harry Potter game! HA HA!

PS. Dark Messiah had a fun combat/magic system. Although it was highly... well... random?
i keep getting bored of DMMM

Diablo 2 Sorcesses are really fun, and Elementalists and Necros in Guild Wars are fun to use.

I love my fireballs!
does anyone play diablo 2 anymore? i remember downloading it like a year ago to see what it was about, killing felt strangely satisfying, but maybe that was just new game *feel?*

The Fable series.
the second one was terrible(in terms of magic) the spells were to weak and even if you had maxed out lightning it still took several attempts to kill someone

Fable... magic was mandatory man
i played through using only a bow...
Well I suppose you could do that.

What I meant was magic was incredibly overpowered in Fable, level 5 lighting killed all!

diablo + clones, morrowind, BG2 and all other d&D rpgs.. yeah magic is fun.

Much better question would be asking which games playing the melee warrior is better than playing a magic user. I can't think of any.

ummmm maybe oblivion or fable? that's all I can think of
really? oblivion magic bored me too death *CAST FIREBALL...1second...20 seconds..MISS**i just gave up and went in with a sword
If you couldn't hit an enemy with a fireball you don't have much skill. Magic was fine in Oblivion, I could utilize it fine, and it always could do way more damage than with any weapon.

Its kind of interesting to think about different schools of magic. Necromancy (or summoning magic in general), in my opinion, has always been totally nerfed and belittled. The only time it has ever been allowed to flourish and be as awesome as it's supposed to be is the Necromancer in Diablo 2. Otherwise, in pretty much every rpg, you can only summon one follower and (in the case of Neverwinter Nights) its pretty pointless when fighting a sorcerer who can just desummon it.

3.5 Dungeons and Dragons
Does it ok, but not best. I'd say the computer adaptations of AD&D worked best for me. Icewind Dale, for example. Dungeons and Dragons adaptations have awesome magic systems overall though. Check out Icewind Dale 1&2, Baldur's Gate 1&2, Neverwinter Nights 1&2 and Temple of Elemental Evil. That last one has a low level cap (as does BG1), so there's not as much magic as in the others... But IWD, BG2 and the Neverwinter Nights games are filled to the bursting point with the stuff, and it's well-implemented. An Epic level Wizard or Sorcerer in NWN is, as someone pointed out, unstoppable. Can't beat the feeling of being able to stop time, rain fiery death upon everyone in sight and turn them into decorative statues - all at once. I miss the dimension door and teleport spells in BG and NWN, though.

Edit: Hmm, the post above mine makes me think of another game. Dawn of Magic! An RPG based 100% around spellcaster classes. It never really grew on me, but it might grow on you guys. It was too diablo-esque for me, but hey, some people like that.

Oblivion and Okami come to mind. At least with oblivion, you could use a lightning spell on someone's bollocks. :p

In Puzzle Quest the magic is really nice and useful. In fact the game is really hard (and boring) without any magic.
The magic system always confused me in that game. How is "throw ax" a spell and why does it require manna?

Dungeon Lords is the only game I've ever played where you can roll sideways or do backflips WHILE CASTING A FIREBALL/FIRENOVA/ETC.

however, it was poorly implemented, and I'll say what I always say:

MELEE WILL ALWAYS SCALE BETTER THAN MAGIC.

Magic is very helpful in single player RPGs, though, like to be a battlemage, and have the option to heal yourself, take things out from afar, etc.

Good old pen&paper Dungeons & Dragons. Sure it's not a videogame, but I feel it is amazing how much simply having to imagine for yourself what a spell and its effect look like adds to the fun-factor.
This, this, this, a thousand time this!!!

does anyone know any games were magic was actually fun, or at least used properly?

edit: to clarify, i found oblivions magic system rubish! the spells went to slow and i never felt that they were killing things, a good magic system (by my standards) would be one that has a good amount of spells being different from , fireballs, sleeping spells, summon spells, and taming spells.
sounds alot like guildwars to me, but that really bored me after a few hours.

Magic is always fun, but only if the controls work. Most console games suck with magic. The Fables, Mass Effect, Force Unleashed I felt were way to limited in controls to really use magic(or Force/biotics to prevent trolling). The only good example of magic on a console for me is the Tales series. Because combat is like a fighting game, movement is limited, and controls are more varied for attacks. In most console games, more then half the controls are already taken up for everything else. In Tales, you have 8 fricken slots of spells in addition to basic attacks and everything else. PC games work great with magic if done with a keyboard or interface bars to hold them all. I really felt like a mage in WoW because, with a few mods, every single spell in my large arsenal was at my immdiate disposal.

Summary, magic is fun, but only if the variety of spells can be used fluently. If the contols suck, I'll stick with hack n' slash sword play.
