I'll echo Battlefield: Bad Company 2 sentiments. It's supremely satisfying to drop a bullet straight onto someone's noggin, especially if that someone's another sniper with me in his crosshairs. And I like being on the far end of a map and still being able to interact with and support my teammates, dropping players they're having problems with, players chasing them, players they haven't seen yet but are lying in wait; very happy to be a team player. What's also supremely satisfying is spinning around to see an enemy racing up from behind to knife me and dropping him with a no-scope shot.

And even though I'll take flak for this (more than likely), I love sniping in Modern Warfare 2. The Intervention is my rifle of choice, and I'm trying to build skill with the ACOG. I've never really been given grief for sniping, probably because I hard-scope almost all the time. I do like quick-acquisition moments, which are many. The range and accuracy of assault rifles and even some SMGs is considerable with the more skilled players, so being able to snap off a torso or even headshot is gratifying.

In both games, I try to communicate as much as possible based on what I see. Not necessarily looking for praise or glory, but I like knowing I can provide a decent amount of support for my teammates (provided they're not being jerks).

true that, anti-material with incendiary rounds is kingly against Deathclaws.

I'd go with OF Dragon Rising, as it's incredibly challenging but very rewarding. The mission where you rescue the pilots and Player 2 gets to be a sniper is absolutely incredible, when I played it through with my mate I stayed behind to distract the enemy whilst he ran for safety, not only did I get to feel utterly heroic I also managed to kill them all before even coming under fire.

It's time to come out of the dark lurk-corner, and showcase some proper sniping.

I hear so many of you talk of BF:BC2, and I'm surprised you're able to play that game at all. The mouse acceleration and animation lag (there's a 0.2 second delay before the trigger and the animation starting) make the game properly unplayable. If you want Battlefield, have Battlefield 2:

And for people complaining about Call of Duty: I know how you feel. I felt that way too, until I started playing ProMod.

In multiplayer, I think that Sniping has more or less ruined a good portion of the games it's touched. [...] it's pretty bloody effective.
That's because too many games are frag-based, instead of team-based. In any multiplayer game where you win by capturing flags, conquering map areas or planting "the bomb", the campish sniping solution will make you pretty damn useless. Which - in turn - is why I showcased the two videos above.

Operation Flashpoint, Arma, Arma2.

Stuff like that.

Very satisfying to put a bullet through a high value target at long range, after perfectly judging the drop, and even the windage, and enjoy the fact that his comrades are having a long, difficult game of trying to guess where the hell it came from.
Seconded, especially if you have the required skill to do it from about 3 miles away, major, major satisfaction.

Maybe Call of Duty 4, there was this thing about sniping that made it enjoyable because the game had set sniping spots.

Sniper Elite. That game makes you feel absolutely awesome.
Until it forces you to do close quarters combat.
We're talking about the sniping exclusively. Look at the topic name.
Yes, but it sort of takes away from the experience when they stop you from doing it.

No, they just give a different experience. It changes nothing in the sniping of the game.

But it changes the game as a whole. And that includes the sniping.

No, it really doesn't. What we're talking about here is in what games is sniping fun. When you are sniping in Sniper Elite, it is awesome. It doesn't matter what happens in the rest of the game. Sniping is fun in Sniper Elite. End of story.

Lost Planet 2. Headshots give an incredibly satisfying 'PTCHT' noise. Though, usually sniping battles come down to using them as aggressive megaweapons, meaning fighting about 10 feet away from each other with sniper rifles, rolling and jumping back and forth taking shots. And damn is it fun!

I remember fighting someone one on one in a narrow corridor. We were taking shots, back and forth, him with a plasma rifle and me with a 5 shot burst close quarters sniper. We both hid on the outside of the corridor behind a wall. He came out from behind his wall and I made my move. I went into a roll from behind my wall, aimed, took a shot and popped all five of my bullets into his frickin' face. It was very satisfying.

New Vegas absolutely NAILS the art of sniping from long range, especially if your video card's beefy enough to max out the actor distance slider without slowing to a crawl.

The sand flats behind Helios One, full of fire ants, is a devil's playground for farming XP one .308 round at a time. And the AMR is the great equalizer in Quarry Junction against the Deathclaws. Get up on a ridge and it's a lot less lethal around there. (though I admit, Stealth Boy + about four or five C4 in the main Deathclaw nest + remote detonation = explodey goodness.)

Battlefield sniping is good as long as your entire team isn't camping at the back of the map.

The Widow sniper in Mass Effect 2 is one of the best guns for Insanity mode

Yeessss. That game is awesome. I got it on a steam sale; never regretted it.

It's a game made about sniping. The effects of wind and gravity, slow-mo follow-the-bullet... awesome!

^This.

Nothing is quite the same as dropping someone in a squad with a suppressed M110 and then watching the victim's squad-mates running around for cover and desperately searching for you. Little do they realise it came from nearly 1km away. Feels good, man.

Also, it's fun in Battlefield 2, but mainly for the ragdolls when people die. Backflips? Yes please!
