Games with NO STORY whatsoever.

There are a lot of fantastic games that forego the whole scripted story aspect. I mean, take the shmup genre. These games often have little or no story, but they're challenging and evocative - and pure fun. Sometimes you'll get a few blips of text between levels, but this really doesn't add to the game much, and in some cases it simply gets in the way. There's no need for a story, here.

Racing games (not alway sims) also have no need for a story. I love games like Gran Turismo, Forza, Rallisport Challenge, Kaido Battle (and 2, 3), and OutRun (and 2, 2006, etc.). There's no need for a story here, it just would get in the way of the core game mechanic, which is racing (or, in a sim, sometimes building and tuning your car).

Story sometimes just doesn't fit in a game. Scripted story, especially. I'm increasingly annoyed that RPGs tend to give you some silly rail-line story that leaves you going from point to point doing inane crap just because the game said so. We're at the point in RPGs where you should be able to make your own damn story. Give me interaction and variety, give fleshed out NPCs, and give me a lush, detailed environment, but let me deal with it all. I know what interests me more than some over-the-top story-writer who still thinks the 'strong-silent type' or 'angsty teen warrior' are the epitome of lead game characters. And I especially hate it when some important plot event happens to my characters in a cut-scene. Screw that. I'm old enough to make my own characters, parties, and decisions. Ultima let me do this nearly 20 years ago. Get on with it already.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which is probably a good thing, seeing as basically all fighting games have good awful storylines.

Left 4 Dead doesn't exactly have a tangible story. That's part of the game though so that doesn't count...

Final Fantasy Tactics and Neverwinter Nights 2 are two hot contenders though. They build up to crescendos before ultimately wasting the characters in the end.

You know the ones. The games where you get plonked into a suit of power armor, a shotgun deathcock shoved into your arms, and your vision tunneled to the first person perspective and thrust directly into the game with no idea how; or best of all why.

Worse of all as you progress through levels you still have no fucking clue what the point is besides fucking this world up.

My list includes Quake, and the entire racing sim genre.

What others have you come across that never once actually gave a story in the game itself.

PS: And don't say it's explained on the box, games should hold up on their own.
While there wasn't much story for Quake til the end, i still freaking loved that game.
The one for me that takes the cake would be Gears Of War. In this day and age, where narratives rule, they didn't do the best job of storytelling.
Don't get me wrong, i like the game, just the story could have been better.

Killing Floor. Some place in London made some people that got loose and killed everyone. You go kill them.

Fun game though. PLAY IT

I've got no idea, I have the first one on pc, and while the gameplay was great, the story was fairly mediocre, and I'm yet to play the second til they release it on pc. This is the first i've heard of a prequel, but if it's true, i'm going to say "oh dear god".

World of Warcraft, is a good example.... Just do this quest than that, no real main line of story.
well i can agree no main story line but it has alot of storylines you can folow plus its an MMO if everyone was doing the exact same thing at the exact same time then there's barely any social so might as well make it 1player
WoW has a story, sure it isn't a individual characters story but lore, land, history, races and all that crap nobody gives two craps about.

System Shock, System Shock 2, Bioshock, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, GTA4, Prototype, Halo 3, Hitman: Blood Money, and Call of Duty 4 have no story WHATSOEVER.

I am pretty sure the Gears of War series is just a bet to see how long they can release games that tell you less then nothing about why things are happening

Asteroids. It had no story at all. In fact it had such a non-existent story that there is no way anyone on earth could make it into a movie. It would just be impossible. Oh wait.....

WRONG! Robotnik has been kidnapping (critternapping?) the woodland creatures, and Sonic, as the forest's protector, must journey through Robtnik's many, many, MANY, often ridiculous set-ups to save them, and, subsequently, the rest of the known world. There's just no details. No reason Robotnik's "roboticizing" the creatures (other than "he's evil"), no reason for the ludicrous stages, and Sonic's the protector because...he runs really fast? And what the hell was the special stage, anyway?

Back on topic, I'm pretty sure that Final Fantasy X-2 has no story, just a bunch of stuff that happens, followed swiftly by people telling you to do things (kill things or find things, 99% of the time). So it's in pretty much the same boat as WoW, which is hilarious, given that it's a JRPG; most of them cut out gameplay for story, but this one cut out story for...the main characters in hot springs?

Wait...Sonic the Hedgehog was re-released for Dreamcast?

Final Fantasy x-2 did have a story, but in order to understand the whole thing you had to give it multiple playthroughs, to get 100% and unlock the story portion pertaining to Tidus.

And getting back to the GoW topic. I'm pretty sure Gears Of War is more of a bet to see how far a series can get on ganeplay alone.
