An XCOM style version of one of those games sounds pretty sweet, I was thinking maybe a turn based style of the vanilla game, but thinking about it that's just silly now that you mention it, of /course/ they'd never do that, not when they're charging £20 for a squad. But a Necromunda game would kick ass, plus I could hook the soundtrack up to The Lord Weird Slough Feg for happy fun times. I can certainly see Space Hulk being the most likely candidate given its more "40k" but is less known about and more ripe for a TBS.
Apparently the Space Hulk game was pure luck. The head of the company making it happened to be unknowingly talking to Ian Livingstone at GDC, expressed his desire to make a SH game and Livingstone put him in touch with the right people.

so, what about thgey give the 40K table-top game the same treatment as they did Bloodbowl?

I'd play the shit out of that if it weren't for the costly miniatures, this would be awesome.
Check second-hand on ebay and get creative with some greenstuff. Cuts down on costs immensely.

But yeah, having excessively priced minis is a pain in the buns, especially when everything is still awesome. Buuut until the company starts losing money aint nothin' gonna change.

Sucks too because tau are next in the lineup and i just dont have the few hundred dollars im going to need to get just the new kits and a book.

On topic:

Seems interesting, though I've never played any of slytherine's work so I really don't know what to expect. It's nice to know they are branching out to different studios though. Always good to get a fresh perspective.

I'm deeply split about this.
A new 40k TBS sounds awesome, but I really want DoW III or Space Marine II to happen. Relic has done a great job with the franchise so far and it would be sad to see them stop handling it.

I'm hoping that whoever does it includes two things in their design : 1 ) base building. I wish I could put my finger on what it adds but base building is an undeniable reason I strongly favor the original Dawn of War over its sequel. 2 ) Vehicles rendered 'to scale'. I want my massive tanks massive, not the sort of 'half again as large as a marine' we've generally seen.

Those who liked the concept but not the price of minis really ought to consider checking out DoW. Much as I like the assembly / painting part of tabletop games, the scope of games I've played would've been ridonkulously expensive had we needed to buy miniatures.

All I can say is that the new guys are in for a bumpy ride. I've had to deal with GW myself once re their IP: they can be mind blowingly bizarre and heavily micro managing with what they will, and will not, allow you to do and or say. Fantasy Flight games had to submit a battlecry for their 'in house' Space Marine chapter for Deathwatch for approval 15 times. This was after each one had already been vetted internally.

Another oddity they might run into is the 'mention but don't use' rule. FFG's authors ran into this one when they tried to write an AdMech sourcebook for Dark Heresy. They could mention the skittari only in the vaguest terms, and could not have them as player characters, only npcs. This led to some rather elaborate mental gymnastics by the design and writing teams to try and have an 'I can't belive it's not skittari' class.

I don't think it's humanly possible to agree with you any more than I currently do. A DH RPG would have been somewhere beyond both brilliant and fantastic.

To me this sounds like it will be some kind of toned down Mobile/IOS/PC release. Honestly, would rather see a squad based 40k game in the frame of XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
You know what heaven is like? A battered Mars bar that's been deep fried. You know what would replace that definition of heaven? A squad based WH40K game after the likes of X-COM. Imagine having your team of SM/ IG/ CSM/ Whoever that you have spent the whole game raising, and then one of your valiant battle brothers (Who you gave the spikey shoulder pad and beaky helmet to set him apart from the others) dies, with no reloads. Quite possibly one of the most hair-ripping-outly fantastic ideas ever to grace the mind of man.

I can see GW licensing a full version of WH and WH40K for tablets
I've always thought that tablets were a natural domain for Strategy games, and have been really surprised at how few good ones there are. (And being honest- if they did it, and had a f2p model, I might end up spending a few pennies on accessories for a Dark Angel army like a mug...)

The bit that isn't a reply to anyone...
I think that this sounds like some of the best news I have heard so far in 2013! I'd dearly love to see it as an X-COM style RTS on a tablet, I don't own a decent gaming PC right now (Just a crappy laptop that BSOD's like a goodun), and have been doing more mobile/ tablet gaming recently (especially since humble bundle 5!), and it would just be awesome. I wonder if it might end up as a re-imagining of Chaos Gate? We are seeing a remake of Space Hulk, and stranger things have happened....

Also fun fact: Slitherine is the same developer that did the 'simulation software' for the Deadliest Warrior series haha
I was going to say this! This is actually all I know them from, so I always kind of had the image they were a second rate developer. Hopefully the game turns out to be good.

I'd prefer another RTS, but I have no problems with TBS. Between just finishing Dawn of War II Retribution and starting Fire Emblem Awakening, I've gotten a serious bug to play some strategy games.

I just hope you can play as factions other than the Space Marines. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

The Inquisition commends your fervor. May none find you wanting.

OT: I love the table top, but it's fucking expensive. If this is done right, everyone can all have their fill of a 40k turn based game without bankrupting themselves and everyone they know! And maybe, just maybe, the Tau won't be terribly and the Tyranids won't be totally broken. The Necron, however, will be utterly broken, as always.

For everyone asking about an X-COM-like version of Warhammer 40k, here's the obligatory Chaos Gate mention:

Check out Chaos Gate. http://www.mobygames.com/game/warhammer-40000-chaos-gate

Anyways, I've never heard of Slitherin, but I'll reserve judgement until I see what they do with the IP. I am disappointed though that we won't get a Total War version of WH40K.

I really hope that we'll be seeing a video game version of the tabletop game. While GW has always been firmly behind the idea that they are a model company first and any digital version of the tabletop is viewed as potentially taking away model sales, I think it would be a smart business move.

First, it hooks players on the game without the relatively high entry/time cost needed to currently break into the tabletop game. My WH40k playing circle often refers to collecting models as like crack. Well, then GW should take advice from crack dealers: the first one's free. It would also allow current tabletop players the chance to test-drive an army they're thinking about. Again, the idea is to get them hooked.

Second, Warhammer 40K would lend itself really well to a micro-transaction driven cash cow. Think of a LoL-style process where there are free units to play, but you can spend money to expand your armies, get new units, and upgrade skins. As long as the transactions were reasonable, I'd spend buckets of money on this sort of digital store.

Lastly, it would allow GW to quickly test new rules/units/armies without the intrinsic development cost of writing codexes, printing books, and modeling molds. Want to know how balance would be affected if you changed the stat line to a unit, gave them new war gear, or a change in point cost? It would be easy to adjust these numbers in a digital version and allow them to be play-tested by a larger number of people.

You had to mention such a thing, now I'm disappointed too.
Don't worry, there will be an instant fan made modification.

It's probably going to star Space Marines, because GW is so precious with their 'unofficial' mascots. In X-XOM terms that's like starting with Titan armour and Lasers for everyone, such is the relative power of Bolters to assault rifles. Not to mention having an unlimited budget for your base because nobody says 'you cannot afford that' to one of His Astartes... They might get away with 'we don't have the resources to make it ourselves'. The Imperium lost the ability to produce certain things; plasma weapons, dreadnauts, etc, after all.

In spite of my griping, and GW's own horrid pricing, practices, embargoes and overzealous protection of their IP (you can actually get kicked out of an official GW tourney if you've got a tattoo of one of their copyrighted images; aquilia, chaos sigils, etc) I'm actually looking forward to this game.

Of course I'm going to rent before I buy though. I will never forgive nor forget Fire Warrior, and the potential for the next GW game to be it's equivalent.

Err its most likely that its going be an IOS/PC title seeing that is all that Slitherine have ever produced.

But we want it nooooooow.... Always good to see some new 40k game coming along. I enjoy them a fair bit; they're always a good laugh, amusingly enough. Wonder how it'll compare to DoW etc.?
