Games You Quit Playing Beacuse of the Learning Curve

I've been clearing out my desk draws and found two games: X2 - The Threat and X3 - Reunion. I played a little of X2 only to put it down, because it felt like having a second job. The funny thing is X3 is still in the shrink wrap and can't even remember why I bought it in the first place.

What are the games you quit playing, due to the learning curve?

I restarted Civ 4: Colonization about 10 times because each time I played I would be like "Ohhhh that's how that works!" restart.

I don't think I've ever stopped playing a game due to it's learning curve... Maybe Armor Core: For Answer due to it's microscopic text in the robot builder though.

You know, I saw the title to this thread and immediately thought "X3". And yet, I learned to play Dwarf Fortress [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/].

Something else, though, is that I was this close to abandonning Team Fortress 2 [http://teamfortress.com] because of the learning curve until some mates of mine jostled me into learning it properly, and now it's easily one of my favourite games of all time. The reason, I think, I was hesitant, is not that it's a game with a big learning curve, because it's not really that hard, but because the only way to learn is to play online with real opponents who know what they're doing. That's an intimidating prospect.

I haven't done something like that in a while. Still, now that I'm older and wiser, I can actually pick up and play those resource/money management city-builder games now...

Personally, I love games with a hard learning curve -- it gets rid of a lot of the riff-raff. If you play MMOs or online-based games and you're sick of hearing from juvenile players, finding a game with a tough learning curve is one good way to weed them out.

Dead Rising. Did eventually beat it after like my 10th retry a couple years later.

Team Fortress 2? Seriously?

How? Team Fortress 2 was the first computer FPS I played, and it only took me about 30mins - 1hr to get the basic hang of it (I was playing sniper of course if that makes a difference)

Ok then. That makes more sense. Well to the top quote I say my previous post.

I think The Witcher is the only game that I stopped playing because of the learning curve. I felt like I knew what I was doing, but couldn't actually *DO* it. It wasn't a bad game, and I've been meaning to go back to it for a long time now, but there was a lot to learn.

One thing that KILLS games for me is time limits. Valkyrie Profile and Fallout 1 are both games I liked starting, but as soon as I realized that I was killing the game clock without any idea of how well I was doing or how irreparable the damage I was causing to my save was. I wouldn't call that a "learning curve" so much as just knowing how the WHOLE game plays out before you play it.

The ZP review of The Witcher kinda explains why I quit playing it, but yes, add that one to my list.

Only time it was ever "easy" to read the text was back in the PS1 heyday. It's amusing really, it steadily got worse as graphical technology improved.

Hmmph, I'm just glad it was the text you were having issues with, not the "difficulty" of the game.

System Shock 2, I'm planning to continue some day, but it's pretty hard game. Good but hard.

Played the Enhanced Edition. I felt that some of the game play elements just aren't needed, or are just cumbersomely awkward and just end up slowing down the pace of the game too much. I haven't felt compelled to keep playing it. Like obisean said, Yahtzee's review pointed that out well. I just wish I'd seen his review earlier.

Have you ever tried getting past ANYTHING in it?

Seriously it's impossible
